Amphitheatre Hotel B&B

Had lunch here with my mother and friend in Spring of last year. It was so charming sitting on the verandah enjoying a ploughman's lunch, and the to-die-for ice-cream. They are known for Senses ice-cream and it is "simply sensational." Catherine and John are gracious, delightful owners who are gradually restoring the original pub as a B&B. I look forward to returning here again in early 2014 for great food, service, ambiance and hospitality.
Ex-pat living in Southern California.

I stayed only one night but was really impressed with how well this place is presented and managed. If you like local, organic food then this is the place for you. Comfortable beds, homemade ice-cream and a lot of history make this a fantastic stopover between Adelaide and Melbourne.

Lived in Ararat for the last decade and wanted to take my friends on a tour of the district , after having lunch at Avoca , I advised the driver of a quaint little ice creamery I had heard of in amphitheater . So glad we stopped and indulged ourselves in the best ice cream I've ever tasted and had a chance to learn the history of this little gem. Do yourself a favor and call in !

Stopped here for lunch after a visit to the wonderful Dogrock winery in Crowlands (we were staying in Moonambel). Had the Ploughman's lunch. It was very nice. The presentation was old fashioned but we couldn't fault the food. It was really tasty and thoughtfully compiled. Also enjoyed the home made squash even if it was a tad on the pricey side. Loved the homemade ice cream too which was genuinely interesting. It was strongly flavored and beautifully creamy. A real regional delight. The coffee was a near disaster. A weak milky mess (and I'd asked for strong) that was as poor a real coffee as is had in many a year. The service was enthusiastic and quirky. Interesting crafts and whatnots for sale. A strong pass with a little work to do. Great to see interesting places like this cropping up in this excellent but sometimes sadly overlooked region. I'd happily go again.

Fantastic spot. Quiet, great hospitality and very convenient. Well looked after and would definitely stay again. Next time we will definitely try the delicious ice cream. Absolutely an understated part of Victoria. The main meals at the hotel looked fantastic too, especially with everything being grown or sourced locally and organic.

The Amphitheatre Hotel is unusual to say the least. We stumbled upon it in our search for a friends weekender at Nowhere Creek in the Pyrenees (and yes the name says it all- although the views, wildlife, and forests make up for any inconvenience in finding it). Now we know the wines up here in the Pyrenees pretty well -but it is the ice-cream at this out of the way venue that amazing. I have passed the Hotel many times in my quest to find a great wine. From the outside a reason to stop is not obvious. But in this instance, lack of GPS coverage required directions only a local could give. Wow what a find!
With acommodation, food and gallery all in one quirky venue located off the beaten track, you could be forgiven for thinking the trip to enjoy a frozen treat here is simply not worth the effort. You would be sorely mistaken. This is not ice-cream. It is pure heaven. The salty caramel and the rum and raisin were quite simply 'to die for'. Hand made, real ingredients right down to the alcohol infused raisins. We watched a few other travellers tumble across the doorstep and be blown away with rich creamy berries and all manner of out-of-this-world flavours. Add ice-cream at the Amphitheatre Hotel on your Bucket List...and grab a Pyrenees red along the way!

Room Tip: It's not four star but call John or Catherine and soak up their enthusiasm. It's about the I...
