“Quaint and very old world.”
Reviewed February 22, 2014

Stayed one night in the Terrace Room, a little dated and in need of a lick of paint but very comfy bed with good size television, also bath, shower and toilet.
Room door opens onto terrace with tables and chairs to relax and enjoy the night air with a drink. This room was at the rear or the property and was very quiet from any street noise.
Have limited parking for cars, need to book a spot if you wish to drive, and nightly cost of $30.
Staff were very helpful and courteous.
Restaurant attached to the hotel served up a brilliant full buffet breakfast.
The location was in walking distance to lots of eateries, pubs and interesting little arty type galleries, and speciality food shops.
Easy access to public transport, (buses, taxis).
Would love to stay again.

We were introduced to the Hughenden some years ago and now make it our essential hotel when in Sydney. It has a superb atmosphere, absorbing the quirkiness of Victorian mansion, and of course, being up to date in the facets that you need in contemporary accommodation. The fine antiques and art works in the reception room, and throughout the establishment, enhance this unique feeling and "at homeness." The staff are kindly and very willing to assist. It has a very pleasant restaurant for evening dining, with the breakfasts being served in this light filled and quite spacious area. Strolling around Woollahra,at any time of day and night is sensational and the hotel is strategically placed for all sorts of inspiring experiences. So thanks Hughenden-see you again soon to partake of your hospitality.

We booked a 'Standard' room because the 'Cosy' ones sounded rather small. But the room we were given was tiny anyway, hardly any space around the double bed. If you'd opened your suitcase on the stand, for example, it would have blocked your way to the bathroom. There was an ironing board on small legs in the cupboard - but I had to use it kneeling down in a tiny space on the floor, as there was no table to put it on. The only place you could be in that room was on the bed (good view of tv - it was very close!) We checked out early and went elsewhere, it just wasn't a place we could enjoy being in.
The saving grace was lovely staff member Marianne on reception who was delightful and very helpful.

Room Tip: Insist on seeing the room first - they are all different, apparently, part of the vintage charm, but...

My husband and I spent a week at The Hughenden with another couple from NZ and our sons while watching the Ashes Cricket Test. The staff were helpful, charming and professional. Unfortunately our Terrace Room overlooked the main intersection which meant going outside with our friends for a drink in the evening was impossible due to the loud traffic noise. The room, breakfast and location were perfect in every other way and I would recommend The Hughenden as long as you get a quiet room.

Room Tip: Ensure your room does not overlook the main intersection of Oxford, Moore and Queen Streets.

This hotel wasn't for us. If you like shabby chic, quirky bohemian style then I can see the attraction of the main part of the hotel. But the bedroom accommodation is dire. We had been told that the 'cosy' bedrooms were very small so we opted for a Terrace apartment (T7). This was in a separate building across the road. The furniture was old and rickety and we had to use the kichen sink to wash our face as the bowl in the bathroom was so tiny and had a shelf above that you had to be a contortionist to use it! The whole apartment block looks like it needs renovating or a coat of paint and a good clean at least. I've posted some photos so that you can see for yourself.
On the plus side the location was in the lovely suberb of Woollhara next to Paddington with some lovely restaurants and bars within walking distrance. Only 15 minutes stroll to Sydney Cricket Ground - which is why we were in this area, only a short ride to beaches too. The breakfasts provided within the cost were basic but really nice and thoughtfully prepared and the dining room was very pleasant to sit in and watch the world go by. Also, lovely staff throughout the hotel and pleasant fellow guests.
It's obvious from the Visitors Book in the lobby that many people appreciate this hotel and come back year on year so I've come to the conclusion that if you don't mind a hotel that is full of character but lacking in good standard bedroom accommodation then it could be ok for you.

Just returned after a night at the Hughenden. This was a special night away to celebrate my husbands birthday. We chose Room 23 , one of the larger rooms that had been renovated.
We have had lunch and dinner there once before, and had sent my son and his partner there for a package once before, so we were really looking forward to our stay.
We were greeted very warmly by a lovely lady at Reception , and shown up to our room, even though we were very early.
The room was quietly elegant , with a huge king sized bed, and a lovely lounge area..It had a very modern bathroom, which wasn't huge, but had everything that we needed..( perhaps just one more shelf for our toiletries?). The toiletries provided were first class Australian Organic Products...yummy herby perfume .
We appreciated the daily papers provided and the water stand downstairs.. I didn't see water glasses in the room, which might have been nice..It was a very hot day yesterday and today.. Thank goodness for the room air-conditioning and ceiling fan.
We had a little poke around and the place is a maze. We discovered a lovely little terrace area upstairs which would have been a nice place for drinks with friends..Also found the library with its magazines and assorted books..
Breakfast this morning was more than adequate. The same lovely lady from Reception was busily refreshing the buffet constantly and warmly chatting with guests. It was lovely sitting having breakfast watching the world go by.. ( didn't see the millions of bats flying overhead like last night...)
We have travelled overseas extensively and stayed in many older places and modern uber hotels, which I like, but this little gem is cute ,warm and just NICE..We would return..Its not the cheapest if you pay the rack rate ( like us) but we had a lovely stay and that's all that matters.

Room Tip: get a renovated room.

Hi Karen M

Thanks for taking to time to review The Hughenden, we always appreciate feedback from guests, and it is especially rewarding to receive such positive feedback.

We are glad that your husband enjoyed his birthday, and we are thrilled that you enjoyed your stay and were able to take advantage of some of the quieter nooks of the hotel.

We look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

Regards

This was a huge disappointment, my wife and I had been really looking forward to staying in this hotel for some time. We had booked a standard room, as we were out sightseeing most of the day. The first room they gave us was tiny, the shower room was just a small cupboard. In fairness they gave us a larger room when we said this wouldn't do. The second room was a bit better, the four-poster bed takes up most of the room and was extremely comfortable. They brand this hotel as being antique and vintage and in the public rooms and foyer they could get away with it. As for the bedroom furniture, it's just old and falling apart. To me calling this vintage is an excuse for not spending any money on refurbishment. There was a huge cobweb in one corner above the window, which was still there after we left. The en-suit as they like to call it, or shower room, was tiny. It was so small that there was nowhere to put your toilet bag or toothbrushes. The tiles were cracked and broken and the whole place needed a good clean. The hotel displayed 3 or 4 awards in the hallway. On closer inspection they were all dated 1999 to 2001, I think this is the last awards they got and about the last time they decorated.
Still after all this my wife and I decided to wait and see what the breakfast was like before we made a final comment on the hotel. Having eaten in the hotel last year we were expecting a very nice breakfast. This was also very poor. There were 2 hot plates with tomatoes or mushrooms, sausages and bacon and what appeared to be some sort of burnt egg. It wasn't scrambled, it looked like an omelette had been chopped up. This was on for the 4 days we were there. There was cereals, breads, jams etc, hot water for tea and coffee in thermos flasks, but it was all just set up and thrown together on the bar area. There was no waitress service at all. One girl occasionally came in and took away the dirty plates from the tables. There was no salt and pepper on the tables, they were all bare, no table clothes, you had to collect your cutlery and condiments yourself. You can see there was a chef or cook in the kitchen working feverishly away but not for the hotel guests, maybe prepping for the night meals. We thought we would ask for a couple of poached eggs one morning, just for a change, but were told, '' What you see is what you get'' To be honest I don't think they could do poached eggs. Maybe a one night stay in this hotel would have been OK, but 4 nights was way too much. This might be an antique hotel as far as Australia is concerned but the management are getting away with murder with the furniture and fittings. We've stayed in old hotels all over Europe, hundreds of years older than this place, but what they all have in common is up to the minute services(bathrooms) and decoration. Yes there were workers in when we were there, so maybe the place is getting spruced up, but I doubt it. Coincidently as I was sitting on the porch waiting for my taxi there was an electrician surveying the hotel's fuse box. He was scratching his head in disbelieve at the condition of the wiring. I knew how he felt. The previous reviewers must have been Australians with rose tinted glasses that had never stayed in a hotel before, or maybe it's just me.

Room Tip: Pay the top price and you might get one with all the mod cons that come as standard in most hotels...

Hi Ewen A

Thanks for taking the time to share your comments. As you are aware from your recent stay, the hotel is in the midst of a significant refurbishment program. At the time that you booked, you were offered to stay in one of our fully refurbished rooms or suites. You chose to benefit from a discounted rate and stay in one of our un-renovated rooms.

We are always happy to help any of our guests, and as you said in your review, when you told the staff that you were unhappy with your allocated room, they changed you to another one without any questions. You didn’t mention that we had a limited time offer in place during your stay, which allowed guests to be upgraded to one of our fully renovated deluxe suites for only $50/night – a huge discount (if available). You chose the discounted un-renovated room.

All of our deluxe rooms were fully refurbished during 2013, along with recent refurbishments to the rooms in the rear wing of the hotel. The actual room that you stayed in is scheduled to be fully refurbished in January 2014.

We aim to make the stay of all of our guests comfortable and memorable. When guests choose to stay in an un-renovated room, they still benefit from access to our fully refurbished lounge areas, our renowned restaurant (run by internationally award winning chefs), and excellence in service.

More disappointing than your review, is that, you were offered a solution and you chose not to take it, but you still posted such a scathing review. Why would you do that? I am at a loss. We ask all guests to fill in a comment card with a survey rating their stay. We obviously use those comments to guide improvements to the hotel - you didn’t provide your feedback in that capacity.

When you next return to Australia, we would welcome you back to experience one of our fully renovated rooms - all of which should be completed within the next 12 months.
