Reviewed January 27, 2013

We travel and stay in hotels frequently so it was a joy to stay in one with a bit of personality. The welcome was good and friendly.

We stayed in room 1 which looked out onto the carpark. Good very comfy twin beds and it was useful to have tea making facilities. The room was spotless. The availability of wifi was appreciated and we were invited to print off our travel tickets using their computer and printer. The bathroom was a little small and will I am sure be one of those to be refurbished but it served us well for two nights.

The library was excellent and looked inviting. The display of memorabilia was interesting.

The choice at breakfast was good. I like tea in a cup and saucer so that was appreciated! As was the chance of a teapot in which to leave it to brew. Even the small leak in the breakfast area was fine - we live in a leaking old house so for us the experience was just like home.

An ideal venue for those who like the Notting Hill/Kensington vibe in the UK (trendy, fashionable etc) - not really us but it was easy to get into the centre.

If we come back to Sydney, we shall stay again. Being English, we liked the whole atmosphere. A bit of comfort and relaxation on an otherwise frenetic holiday. Thank you for having us.

Hi Sara D,
Thank you for your outstanding 5/5 rating and I am thrilled that you enjoyed your stay. As you briefly mentioned, The Hughenden is going through a refurbishment stage which will include our restaurant, function space and most importantly our guest rooms. Please be assured The Hughenden will preserve its existing charm nevertheless an update will commence in order to ensure all of our guests have an pleasurable experience. A lot of our guests’ do relate The Hughenden to B&B’s you may find in London or in The Blue Mountains however we are conveniently located minutes to Sydney’s CBD. I am thrilled to hear you enjoyed our buffet breakfast, we understand breakfast is the most important meal of the day so we strive to make it the best! With 7 different tea flavours and freshly brewed coffee, you are assured to be satisfied. Thank you very much Sara D for your kind words and we look forward to welcoming you back to The Hughenden, cheers!

A lovely place to stay. One can feel the history in the building. The staff are friendly and helpful, the rooms are comfortable and the showers are good.

I have to point out that, having found my 'account to be paid' sitting outside the door upon the morning of my check-out, I felt as though my bill was being thrust in my face and that I was being hurried to check-out, all before I'd even had a chance to go for breakfast or even have a cup of tea.

Hi Jason B,
Thank you for finding the time to review our property. I am happy to hear you found The Hughenden a lovely place to stay. You most certainly can feel the history when you enter the building from the original grand residence owned by the late wealthy Sydney doctor Dr. Quaife, to a Masonic Hall to a Ladies College and the phases in between. I am sorry to hear that you thought our ‘Express Check-out’ system was rushing you out of your room, this is most definitely not our intention. This system was introduced to avoid delays during check-out time allowing guests to see their final invoice and to fill out their credit card information on the express check out form in their room to avoid delays at reception in the morning. Your bill is placed under your door by our Night Porter. All guests are welcome to stay in their room until normal check out time of 10am (Mon-Sat) and 11am (Sun). We have taken your comments into thought and appreciate the feedback. Once again Jason B, thank you for choosing The Hughenden and we look forward to seeing you again, cheers!

I absolutely loved my stay! What a unique place! It is in a beautiful location - close to the city and the beach, shopping centre and across the road from Centennial park, but still away from all the noise and madness of the busy Sydney life.

The rooms were comfortable and it was a treat to have a bath and foxtel! The breakfast was generous and delicious - it is such a nice extra to have breakfast included.

The staff were friendly and helpful. I will definitely be returning and recommending. It was a nice change from the boring standard hotels you get these days, and I hear they are opening a new restaurant there soon too!

Room Tip: If you have a pet there are pet friendly rooms! Also if you have a car you need to book parking

Hi Gemma T,
Thank you for your lovely review of The Hughenden. We are always thrilled to hear our guests have an enjoyable and memorable experience. You have highlighted many benefits of staying at The Hughenden including our central location and facilities including recently renovated bathrooms in our Deluxe rooms in which you may request a bath. We are also in the planning stages of refurbishing a few other rooms so stay tuned! Our buffet breakfast is becoming very popular even with non-hotel guests! You will find a selection of fresh seasonal fruits, delicious creamy yoghurt, homemade muesli, bacon and eggs, seasoned mushrooms or tomatoes, baked beans, glazed danishes, toast and a vast array of spreads! This does change almost every day so you will not know what delicious treats to expect the next day. Yes the restaurant will be once again opening for lunch and dinner, check out our website for the latest! Thanks again for your great review of The Hughenden, cheers!

The Hughenden is a converted old mansion - beautiful bones. Like many of these one needs to be a bit tolerant of "older" style and amenities. As in a precious review, pet-friendly hotels in Sydney are difficult to find but the Hughenden is about as good as you can do in that regard.
I'm sure that the "non-pet" rooms are probably a little nicer than the pet rooms but the pet rooms are, at least, clean and tidy and comfortable. The bathroom could use a facelift but it has comfortable beds and there is a little inside "atrium/terrace" for your furry friend if you don't want them in the bedroom. Friendly staff and parking available along with full breakfast included.

Room Tip: Rooms off the main corridor may be a bit noisy. The pet rooms have an outside entrance off the car p...

Hi MarknOz,
Thank you for taking the time to review our property. As you mentioned, The Hughenden may not be for everyone. We are certainly not a cookie cutter hotel you find directly in the CDB but that’s what makes us unique and has seen as operate successfully over the past 15 years. Pet-friendly accommodation is hard to find in Sydney and The Hughenden is happy to offer this service. All rooms are unique to themselves however the pet-friendly rooms do feature titled floors and a little outside area for your furry friend. If you would like to not be allocated to a pet-friendly room just let our reservations team know prior to your arrival. Tip for next time: ask for a room with a refurbished bathroom. We are in the process of updating all aspects of the hotel to make all guests experiences as pleasurable as possible. Thank you once again MarknOz and on behalf of the team here at The Hughenden we hope to see you again and happy travels!

I enjoyed my stay in a cozy (small) room ... it had all the basics covered except the wireless internet was useless where my room was at the rear, but could get a good connection from the lobby and bar areas. They have nice HDTVs with actual HD channels. The breakfast was quite nice with 3 hot items (scrambled eggs, English bacon and beans). The location is OK with buses to downtown or Bondi beach a few steps from the door. The hotel certainly has atmosphere and the rooms are fairly well kept and very clean. Plenty of coffee and tea service inside the room.

Room Tip: Get a room towards the front if you want wireless internet access in your room.

Hi Holy_Innocent,
Thank you for your kind review of our hotel and I’m happy to hear you enjoyed your stay. Thank you for mentioning your concern with our Wireless network. As we are a heritage listed building and have thick cement walls, you may experience minimal connection in rear areas. Over the next few months we are investing in a state of the art Wi-Fi network that will eliminate all challenges that come with running an 1890’s building. A stronger Wi-Fi connection will be available in all rooms for guests’ pleasure regardless of location. We hope to see you again to experience the improvement and we thank you for your kind words about our breakfast, HDTV’s and cleanliness of rooms, cheers!

I've stayed at The Hughenden three times in the past year and I'll stay there again. It's conveniently located on the 378 and 333 buslines that take you directly to Bondi Beach and/or Circular Quay. A "cozy" room (queen bed + full bath) will cost around $150AUD and there is free Internet and free breakfast. I think this is a great price. The Paddington Markets are very close-by, and there are nice neighborhoods in which to take a long walk. Centennial Park is across the street.

The staff is very nice - very professional and accommodating.

If I had any criticisms, it would be that the hotel is older and so the floors squeak. I was worken up a few times by loud-stepping upstairs neighbors. Some of the front rooms are also noisy from street traffice. However, given it's location and room rate, I will definitely stay here again!

Room Tip: Ask for rooms at the back, away from Queen Street, which gets a lot of traffic.

Hi Nicole!
Thank you for your returned patronage to The Hughenden and we look forward to your next visit! You have highlighted many benefits of staying at The Hughenden such as our close proximity to Bondi Beach and Circular Quay where you can explore Sydney Harbour or get a ferry across to Taronga Zoo or Manly Beach! Given our hotel was built late 18th century you may experience some squeaky floors but it’s all part of The Hughenden experience! If you are a light sleeper, as you said I’d suggest a room upstairs at the back of the hotel. Some guests do enjoy staying at the front of the hotel overlooking Queen St so they can watch the many poodles wander past over the leafy outlook, or prefer a more quiet space at the back. I'm very happy to hear you found our staff very professional and accommodating, it's always nice to hear positive feedback on our team. Once again, thanks for your kind review and look forward to seeing you return!

After trying lots of accom for my weekly work trip to Sydney I was relieved to finally find the Hughenden. It has style, is close to everything, staff are friendly, has a great breakfast, a lovely evening bar and the rates won't break the bank. No it's not five star but I would choose the Hughenden over Sydney city accom any day.

Room Tip: The cosy room is like a bedroom at your grandma's house but it's good value and my choice fo...

Hi NessCousins,

Thank you for your returned patronage and kind words about The Hughenden. We do have many corporate travellers like you who utilise our location being so close to the CDB and enjoy our lower rates and unique facilities.

We are far from being a big chain hotel in the heart of the CDB however this is our selling point. We offer a personalised service and unique experience with our quaint rooms and common areas such as The Victorian Lounge and Reading Room. Our small establishment is a great place to relax after a busy day in the city, as you will no longer feel you are only a 5 minute drive away from the CDB but in a small Victorian Manor house. Let your imagination take over!

Thank you for your lovely recommendation NessCousins and we look forward to your next arrival.
