A Place to Exhale

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Apr 6, 2018via mobile
Booked The Smoke House Lodge on Southwest Airlines...great rate!
Stayed here for a midway point between Kentucky & Florida...great place to rest before doing the rest of the rat race.
Clean/resentfully updated rooms.
Outstanding meal (best bbq 2nd only to my hubbies).

Impressive music program for aspiring artists!

Friendly staff at check in/out.

This is a special place steeped in history. Progressive/supportive place for aspiring artists.

If you stay here and complain about amenities, your missing the point/experience.

DDe, thank you so much for your comments and review, we appreciate your 5 star rating. We love aspiring artist and have been promoting and supporting them for several years. Also, have had some songwriting schools here with established hit songwriters conducting the course, and have had over 500 students thru the seminars. Hope you will find the occasion to stop in and stay with us again soon.

It's rare to stumble across a place like this, but I was lucky enough to find this place in the mountains of Tennessee, and will plan on making it a future destination anytime I travel through this beautiful part of the state. I was unhappy with the local hotel chain I was booked at through my business, so I took it upon myself to find a better place to stay, and decided on this location.

The staff was friendly, the room was nice and comfortable. The overall feel was like a cozy, deep in the woods getaway. The property has a lot of nice wood crafted chairs and furniture.

Then I wandered over to the gift shop, considering maybe stopping for a meal and just take a look around. I did decide to go with the buffet, which had likely the best fried chicken i've ever had (yes, even compared to THAT popular chain) it was just outstanding. The variety of sauces was pretty amazing, there had to be at least 20 different ones, BBQ sauces, mustards, and even hot vinegars. I tried their house standard BBQ sauce and had no reason to try others because it was so good on the pulled pork from the buffet. The cornbread was different from what i'm used to, but I liked it. The bread pudding was just awesome. My server Gayle had that 'southern mom' personality that made me feel at home, and I enjoyed her and the great service.

I was ready to pay and leave out at the cashier, and the manager down there commented on my hat (which was the rival of his favorite hockey team) and we had a friendly banter for a minute or two. He proceeded to offer me samples, and I tried a couple flavors of their homemade candy. He continued to sell me on some popcorn that had been made that day, and we got into discussing the store products, the sauces, the rubs. He mentioned that the peach bbq sauce was the best sauce he's had ever, and again, promptly offered me a sample. I wound up leaving the store with nearly 2 pounds of candy, popcorn, and 4 bottles of the peach bbq sauce, because it was just that good. He took the time to be friendly with me, discuss things like old friends would, while introducing me to things I have never had before and will now share with my family and friends back home. The hospitality was very much appreciated and it was just a pleasant overall experience.

It was only a one night stay, and I felt like I cheated myself by not staying longer. I will return to the smoke house in the future, sooner rather than later. Very highly recommended!

The lodge is standard, the rooms are clean, the bathrooms are small and dated. We had room 201 and the vent in our bathroom was turning the wrong way and was blowing cigarette smoke into our room from one of the nearby smoking rooms. - The nearby Smoke House Shop is definitely worth a visit. Make sure you try out some of Mike’s smoked meats!

Gernot, so sorry about the vent fan, something maintenance didn't catch when they changed it out I guess. We appreciate your comments and your review.

We stayed here one night while working our way through Tennessee. This place was refreshing as it didn't feel like the "run of the mill" places. It had a more rustic feel with a lobby that had a fireplace and rocking chairs. Great views also! They have a really big old-fashioned general store and a restaurant. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. Nice change from the other places we stayed at that were clean and comfortable, but with no personality. This place had personality!

This is really a diamond in the rough. Overall the place is rustic and cool. The rooms are spacious and really nice with wood floors, not that suspect carpet that you have no idea what has been in it. The beds are average but comfortable. Bathrooms are clean and decent but the bottom line is the price. you just cant beat the deal. It may just be a three star but i logged it. Check-in was quick and friendly. Yiu wont regret it. Plus there are several restaurants in the area for breakfast.

We happened into town and decided to give this restaurant a try. Great buffet and entertainment. I had the smoked chicken and pulled pork with their berry bbq and peach bbq. The bread pudding is a great choice.

Room tip: I didn't stay here, but will next time.
