Description: Situated on the shores of Sydney Harbour on Rose Bay, Catalina is a beautiful, airy light-filled restaurant and bar with floor to ceiling glass sliding doors opening out onto a long curved balcony over the water. In keeping with its harbourside location, the menu features beautifully fresh seafood - Sydney Rock oysters shucked to order; house smoked Tasmanian salmon; whole snapper and barramundi, filleted on the premises - but also a wide range of the best meat and poultry Australia has to offer. A fabulous Australian and global wine list (over 600 wines) and welcoming, attentive service, make this restaurant a must-do Sydney dining experience. Come in all day for the full menu - Catalina doesn't close between lunch and dinner - or graze on bar food overlooking the most beautiful harbour in the world.

This lovely restaurant has primary location, overlooking famous Rose Bay. But just a number of tables have any view. At first we had table in the corner adjust th staff door, listening to kitchen's conversations. At second, we had moved to the hall and have had wall table, so poor. The srvice was nice, the meals just good. Pricey. So, never want to go again.

Every table at Catalina has a view, but as with all restaurants, some tables are better than others. Unfortunately we can't ever please everyone with our table allocations, but we do try.
As a matter of fact, the owners' favourite table is a table at the back against the wall, from which we can see everything happening in the restaurant, and also everything out on the harbour.
I see from the date you dined that it was almost a year ago. Lots have changed since then, and it is well worth a return trip.

“Excellent service & great atmosphere!”
Reviewed January 13, 2013 via mobile

For years I lived in the Eastern Suburbs and I never dined at Catalina. My husband grew up in the Eastern Suburbs and regularly dines at fine dining restaurants but the last time he was at Catalina was was over 15 years ago so decided to got there for our anniversary this year and I am so glad we did!

We were seated on the balcony and there was a bit of a chill in the air so they set up heating for us. The waiter looked after our wine to ensure the temperature wasn't affected by the heating. The host regularly checked on all the guests dining keeping everything running smoothly and also wished us for our anniversary after I had noted it on our reservation which was a nice personal touch.

The view over the reflections on the water in Rose Bay and the seaplanes was beautiful. The service was very efficient and the food and wine was great!

I had mixed dozen oysters fir entree and the John Dory for my main, definitely worth trying both!

I was worried about getting a taxi from there afterwards. There happened to be one waiting outside the restaurant when we left.

I am looking forward to heading back sometime this year and highly recommend it. I think we'll try lunch next time with some friends to enjoy the views and sunshine. It's right near the ferry so arriving by boat, water taxi or ferry would be fun. I'm glad I tried it after all this time, I'll be back!

“Accidental discovery!”
Reviewed January 11, 2013

A few stops after visiting Bondi, hopped off the Hop on/Hop off bus in Rose Bay and never got back on! Not only discovered Catalina for happy hour, but the ferry back to Sydney was just a stone's throw away. That introduced us to the great water transportation system on which we traveled exclusively after that. The Catalina staff treated us so graciously (hostess Lily is a gem) that we made dinner reservations for the next night (our last in Sydney). Same table with an awesome view! Food was great...we had 2 excellent fish choices, including the infamous "bugs". Owner's daughter Kate chatted with us about how they prepare certain dishes and again made us feel so welcome. The whole
experience was wonderful....

“Consistently great”
Reviewed January 11, 2013

This was probably our 5th visit to Catalina, over several years. It is always a wonderful experience. The food is superb, the setting and view cannot be beaten - Catalinas is very reliable as a top end restaurant. We have been going to this restaurant for a number of years and it is a mark of a good operation that many of the staff are still there. The menu is small and there is also a degustation option with matching wines. We were three for dinner and opted for the a la carte. My only slight criticism of the night was that the waiter presumed that my husband had chosen the wine and presented the bottle to him for approval. The docket should have shown who chose the wine so avoid that error, but it was not such a big deal. It is a special occasion place or somewhere if you want to impress and the prices match that, but the food is very special and the service is excellent.

The view was the best part of the experience. The service was very slow and I thought the days of inhaling cigarette smoke were long gone not here.
