What a surprise and who would have known this was so good and on our doorstep. Last night we dined at Cafe Gundel. The Algerian hostess assisted us with our order of Lagosh (deep fried bread) served with Sour cream, an amazing bean soup...we decided to try more and more on the menu so asked for small portions so this could be achieved. The Schnitzel was superb, the veal knuckle was incredibly tender and the paprika mash was yummy...all in all this was a superb experience and one we would recommend highly. Oh don't leave without having the apple strudel and ice-cream it really rounded up the evening. One down point I would say is that there coffee is terrible but I was offered a replacement tea (camomile) served in a beautiful white china cup which was very elegantly designed:-)

Cafe Gundel is like the family dining room you have when you're not at home - or at least it should be. It's not a fine dining restaurant - but European comfort food served with indifferent attitude. The food was just OK. Chicken Paprika has been better. The sauce was watery and lacking in flavour. The nocedli were somewhat overcooked and the cucumber salad was particularly sweet. The Goulash Soup was likewise too thin and also lacking in paprika and onion flavours. One doesn't go to Gundel for service - its basic and all staff now very little about what they are serving especially if it comes to any beverage but especially wine. It has been much better - but like the food, where there was little "love" the place is looking unloved and tired. Time to find a lover to reinvigorate this life.

Possibily if you are not from Hungary of Eastern Europe, you don't quite know what Hungarian cuisine is - don't let this put you off, there is enough regular fare at Gundel for everyone, but the veals, the snitzels and the goulashes, etc add to the menu and enable you to find something a little different to try, particularly if you are a meat eater. A favourite of mine is the gypsy plate. They do this for 1, 2, and 3, but really it is for 1.5, 3, and 4.5 the servings are so generous - don't order unless you are hungry - it is more of a smorgasbord of different foods from chips to fried mushrooms to steak to snitzel all very tasty. The restaurant is very popular with the locals and has lots of kids dining with parents. I'd definitely book on Friday or Saurday nights. I went this last time just with my wife, but it isn't really the romantic first date location, but fine for established couples as well as families. The staff are very friendly - genuinely so and the wine and beer list is good - again the regular fare plus some interesting Hungarian extras. It is a restaurant I've been to regularly and I'd recommend to others

Four of us ate there on Tuesday 18 February. We can recommend as a starter the langos, a Hungarian fried bread. There are a wide range of entrees...our choice was the cherry soup and the home made pasta with cottage cheese, bacon and sour cream. For the main course the dcuk is outstanding and the stuffed cabbage is also excellent. The desserts include a wide range of pancakes, chestnut puree and cherry and apple strudel. It is byo. The staff is very friendly and the service is relaxed and pleasant. This was our fifth or sixth visit and we will be back next month.

If you want to have a great hungarian meal, this is the place for you. This place is very homely. The schnitzel is great and so is their matzo ball soup. Kathy who is chinese born speaks Hungarian which is very cute.
