The receptionist was friendly, the sheets were clean, kitchen huge as advertised. At first sight it seems fine, as long as you do not enter the kitchen which is very unhygienic (bugs/vermin) and dirty. The hostel is well located, but not intended for a long stay. Definitely eat out if you plan on staying here because I was grossed out. The computers are ok, but just 2 LANS. It also gets quite warm, luckily there are ventilators in every room.

Stayed back in 1998 and it was dirty little place then. Straight off the ferry into this shabby place? Local beaches for swimming or scuba diving and can dive with sharks in the local aquarium. But had a great time hanging out with backpackers/ locals that it didn't really matter.

I've booked it for 2 nights actually but i left it after one night. My room was so dirty, it smelled so bad, there was no window to open. my mattress was about 10cm thick and the hole bed looked really creepy. the floor was sticky and dirty, the locker were so tiny, i couldnt lock all my clothes. The bathroom was also a really nasty place, same as the kitchen. the money isnt worth it, i got a so much better room in a YHA for the same price!!

I've been staying at Manly Backpackers now for a short while and was honestly gobsmacked to see the reviews it's had! A friend and I checked in together having just arrived in Sydney with our Wicked camper - not only do they have a garage here (which is sweet, very useful) but reception were also very helpful in pointing out some places we could park the van overnight. Although the garage is great, we had not booked into it and it turned out or van was just a smidgen too high for it (as it had a collapsible tent on top)!

The room was what you come to expect from a good value backpacker-hostel - decent, soft mattresses, clean sheets and a pillow that performed its function down to a tee. The rooms are fairly basic, but no more so than every other hostel i've stayed in - we have a table, fan, mirror, clothes rack and a window that properly opens.. bonus! There's plenty of space in the 4-bed dorm we're in, much more so than expected from a hostel in such a prime location.

That's the next point i feel very obliged to make upon seeing some other people's reviews of this place.. the location is incredible?! Literally a 2 minute walk through to the main high street, beach, wharf, the clubs.. the receptionist even helped me and my mate find our way to a free basketball court a fairly short walk around the coast - sweet! Personally, to be in such a great place relative to everything else in Manly and for such a reasonable price (in what i've only heard to be basically the most expensive city in Aus), it warrants at least a 3/5 for me. Everything else would have to be horrific to score less than that.. and it simply isn't.

The bathrooms are adequate, not awe-inspiring but personally i haven't had to wait for a shower yet and it's been toasty warm every time. You have to be a little delicate with the controls but as long as you're not Lenny from of Mice and Men you shouldn't have any problem! They seemed perfectly clean for a backpacker hostel, much better than several others i've stayed in - personally felt far from the need to don flip flops!

The Kitchen was cool, plenty of hobs and good hobs too actually - industrial-stylee, boil the water for your 2-minute noodles in no-time! Most cooking utensils and cutlery/croquery is freely available in the kitchen which is pretty awesome. Most places i've stayed have required some sort of deposit for most things - i think the only thing we've needed was a mug with a deposit of $1.50 - hardly any skin off.. The kitchen was actually one of the cleaner hostel-kitchens i've seen in my year here, firstly the type of people this hostel attracts seem to be pretty good at clearing up after themselves which is relieving, not a building full of chavy thugs..! Secondly though I've seen this place being cleaned more times than I've gone in and out of my room (Ok, well maybe not quite that much, but hey...)!

Overall I'll definitely be coming back here for a good while when on my second year visa, cool vibe and easy, laidback. The best thing is probably the overall feel to the place, you definitely don't feel oppressed or as if you're being treated like an irresponsible child - a feeling oh too familiar at a couple of hostels i stayed at in Surfer's, for example.. Personally i think you'd have to your head stuck pretty far up a certain somewhere to turn your nose up at this place :).

Very much enjoyed my stay at Manly Backpackers. On arrival we were greeted warmly and showed to our room which, for a backpacker it was perfect. Comfy beds and pillows, and given a duvet (as it was still pretty chilly at night).
The location was perfect, a few mins walk from all of the shops, the beach, the bars, basically everything.
The price was relatively cheap compared with most hostels in such a prime location.
The staff were very friendly and are happy to help out with any questions, having a very detailed knowledge of the Manly area.
The toilet facilities were clean and the showers nice and hot!
The free internet on their computers in the common area was perfect for checking facebook, emails and general internet browsing.
Overall I had a great time at Manly Backpackers and would definitely choose to stay again if im ever back in Manly.

On arrival we where given our room keys, we walked in and felt like we where stopping in some dirty lads bedroom. with plates and suit cases on all 4 of the beds, apparently belonging to one person.

We did get our room changed, this room was actually pretty decent, bedding was a little old and tatty but it did the job!

On the other hand, the communal areas where AWFUL, the tv had been smashed, computers running counterfeit windows xp, no free wifi like advertised you could purchase wifi at $40 a GB.

(Although that wasn't much of an issue, as you're in manly, and have the amazing national parks and beaches literally on the door step!)

BUT what did matter was the kitchen and bathrooms, these where disgusting, I'm sure if a health inspector seen these it would be shut down. Extractor fans where clogged up with black with grease, spiders and bugs living among the oven tops, which had to be lit using a match/lighter.

The showers where either FREEZING or BOILING and only 2 out the 4 for the whole place worked. toilets where always dirty, full of graffiti and there was only one sink. If it wasn't winter, I'f of showered down the beach!

Overall it's fine if you literally just want a bed for the night and the quickest shower of your life. (make sure you wear flip flops).
