“Nice getaway”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 19, 2009

Did the Sweet Winter Retreat for 2 nights day, breakfasts and dinner for one night. The room had glimpses of the harbor, although for the price we had asked for harbour views. The room had a double bed and single one for my daughter. The room outlook was the same as the pictures on the website. Only complaint was that there was no storage space but then the rooms were not designed for modern times. Considering that it was converted from the 1880s I though the rooms were quite well done.

No cars were allowed which made it very safe for children and helped minimize impact on the environment. If you were unfortunate to stay at the furthest point from the reception and it was raining it would be difficult to get to your car. I was told that they did not take you to the car park unless it was your first time arrival and during the late evenings. There were fantastic views from several vantage points during my walk.

We were quite near the lounge rooms so we helped ourselves to mugs of tea & coffee, although there were tea & coffee in the room itself. I have to say some guests are very messy leaving half drunk mugs and spilling drinks all over the lounge. There was also a computer with internet facilities which made it a magnet for children.

It was really pleasant to sit outside your room on the verandah and read the complimentary papers until the dreaded blower decided to remove a few dozens leaves by making a huge noise.

We did a Wharf & Wander tour which gave us an insight into the history of place. We tried the see the fairy penguins at dusk but none came! We did not go for the ghost tours but we were told that there were paranormal activity in many areas. We looked into one of the toilets and it was really creepy - I am glad we had ensuites.

Breakfast was nothing outstanding. I disliked scrambled eggs especially when it has been sitting in the bainmarie for a while. There were the standard juices, small selection of fruits, pastries, cereals, cheeses and breads. It was really thoughtful to provide papers in the breakfast room and I think that little details like this makes an enjoyable stay.

We had a pleasant 3 course meal at the Boiler Room. The service was impeccable but I expected more from the food. The waiters & waitresses were not intrusive but the same time, ensured we were left not wanting. Thank you for a lovely meal.

I would be happy to stay here again if I can get a good package. We paid more than A$700 for the package as we wanted an ensuite and water views.

“Unique... with shortcomings”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 13, 2009

We stayed at Q Station for 4 nights over the 08/09 new year. Overall we had a pleasant stay, which was facilitated by attentive and friendly staff. The establishment is ideally suited for retreats and conferences, where people remain on site, but can become annoying when using it as a base, as access to your vehicle is somewhat restricted.

Whilst the owners have done a magnificent job at restoring the buildings, the shortcomings of air-conditioning (our room copped the afternoon sun and soared in temperature, making sleeping at night difficult) and bar fridges left a sour taste in our mouths, particularly when one considers what we were paying per night (>$400). It would have also been preferable if infrastructure, such as the staircase to the beach, was opened during this high season.

Unfortunately the restaurant is a significant detraction from the overall Q Station experience. Besides the average (pub quality) food and poor service (we waited 1 hr for our first course), 300-400% mark up on the wine is simply ridiculous. Fortunately the morning breakfast included in our package price was fantastic.

Overall Q Station is a place that should be experienced (preferably at a more reasonable price), although it is unlikely that I would return.

“Hotel Review”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 11, 2009

Excellent place to stay in Manly. It's a little remote if you are on foot but only 5 minutes to anywhere in Manly if you are in a taxi. Accomodation was great when we stayed and so was the service. Q-Station retreat is a unique and relaxing place to stay - I look forward to going back again!

“beautiful place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 25, 2008

A friend and i stayed here for ten days in november. The accomadation was comfortable, clean and very relaxing. The hotel area is on fabulous grounds over looking the harbour, very nice. The view was beautiful at night time.
We found all the staff really nice and helpful.
This is a perfect place to stay if you want to relax in peaceful settings outside of the city. Would be a lovely place for a couple looking for time together. Also on offer was a relaxing option of going for a back massage.
Most of our stay here our fellow guests were business people on retreats and conferences. This esured that the peacefulness of the area was not ruined by any boisturious holidayers.
In our room there was a wide flat screen tv with over 20 movie choices as well as a wide variety of tv channels.
Only potential problem with saying here is if you are a smoker. There is no 'smoking' rooms available and because you are staying in a national park there is a very limited number of areas where you can smoke on the resort.
I would recommend a stay here and would like to revisit. Just on booking check that your room is en-suite as there are some rooms where you have a short walk to your bathroom. :)

“wonderful wedding venue”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 18, 2008

We held our wedding for 40 people at the Q Station in October 2008. It was a fantastic venue and the service and staff were amazing on the day. All our guests commented on how friendly the staff were and how lovely the venue is for such and event (we had the ceremony on the lawn overlooking the harbour and then the reception in the First Class Dining Room).

Many of our guests stayed overnight and had breakfast with us the following morning. As we had such a big group, the functions staff arranged for us to have the buffet breakfast at the Boilerhouse Restaurant rather than with the other guests in the breakfast room. Once again the venue was magnificent; unfortunately the service wasn't. Many guests waited over half an hour to get their tea or coffee, and several (including me!) didn't get it at all even though we ordered twice.

In summary, the place is wonderful and I would recommend it to anyone who wants an unbeatable venue for a small wedding. The functions staff are very organised and the functions food is far superior to anything served at the Boilerhouse Restaurant. However, the other hotel staff (accommodation and restaurant) appear very disorganised and poorly managed and this is unfortunately letting the place down. Hopefully when the management hits its stride these problems can be ironed out.
