“ABSOLUTELY SHOCKING- THE SEBEL IS TERRIBLE !”
Reviewed June 21, 2009

My friends and i stayed here, the room was great, the parking was $17 and there was not even an availble space in the carpark..we had to double park...and at 4AM the fire alarm went off and everyone had to be evacuated beacause someone was having a hot shower which set off the alarm... everyone was standing outside in the freezing cold and no staff came to tell anyone what was going on!! AND THATS NOT THE WORST PART!...they have charged my credit card twice! so now i have to try to get my money back! lucky me! The SEBEL SUCKS! never again.

Let me preface this by saying that the Reception Staff were excellent. They couldn't be faulted. But the price was through the roof for what we got. I had business in the area over the 3-day weekend, so I thought I'd shout my wife to a relaxing long weekend in a luxury resort. Was I ever wrong. We were not on the beach-front street as the address would indicate, but rather up a laneway out the back. This was supposed to be Superior Family Room. It had no DVD, no Kitchenette, no view. Don't get anything from the Minibar ($4 for a $1.70 chocolate, $8 for a $2 beer). There was no free parking ($17 per night) despite paying over $1200 for 3 nights. For that money I could've driven the whole family to Queensland, and stayed for 2 weeks in a fully-furnished, genuine beach-front apartment, and still had change left over. The main bed is in Family Room. Despite being a Family Room, there were no chairs to sit around a table. It was basically like a large Motel Room, but with ridiculous prices. Broadband Internet is advertised, but you have to pay an extra $20 for that. No Spa. No Sauna. Couldn't find the Pool, despite signs saying that access to it was through a certain door. Took the Late Check-Out option (because I had to work on the day we were leaving). That was an extra $20 an hour after midday. Would not go back there again.

Many thanks for your feedback regarding your recent stay at The Sebel Manly Beach.

I am certainly glad that the service provided by the Front Desk staff met your expectations.

Unfortunately it is clear that the other aspects of your stay was less than satisfactory.

All of your comments have been passed on to each department in order to review current procedures that are in place.

I apologise for what seemed a most inadequate guest experience, but again thank you for your feedback.

Having seen some bad press about this place I was a little dubious but upon arrival found it to be a great location.

Hotel No 6 on our honeymoon we got a lovely big room with a balcony facing the rear but with a good sea view.

The place was immaculate with two swimming pools, a duty manager who came straight up to fix a faulty TV and a complimentary bottle of decent bubbly.

We didn't spend much time in the room but I was taken by the place and could easily have spent much longer than our three nights here.

Tip:

Do not eat at the Brazilian Restaurant down the road, very salty and not good.

We were very impressed with the Sebel Manly. The accommodation rooms were very fresh and spacious. Our checkin was fantastic, the team on the reception desk were very helpful and friendly and said hello to us by name everytime we walked through the reception area. This hotel is in a great location, right opposite the beach (a patrolled beach). There were a lots of restauants within a close walking distance to the hotel were we had dinner each night. I would recommend this hotel to people wanting to visit Manly.

  • Liked — It was fresh and spacious, great value for money
  • Disliked — we were very impressed.

I stayed for six nights in June. Despite being their longest resident at that time of year, they put me in the back building, which requires walking through a muddy building site to reach. The electronic key system was faulty, so I had to return to Reception on numerous occasions. A very old and depressing lift takes you up. The room was a decent size but overlooked the refuse bins of the apartments behind. My televison did not work for two days, and was not properly repaired despite several complaints.

Reception staff were quite nice and quite helpful, but this hotel feels like a backpackers hotel at four star prices. It really is a bit of a dump.

  • Liked — The size of the room
  • Disliked — It felt like a 1970s American motel

Stayed at the Sebel Manly Beach for 2 nights in a Superior Room. We knew that we would not get an ocean view, so the expectations were not that high. However make sure you at least get a level 4 or above room so that at least you get some view.

For $200 (AUS)/night for a Superior (which is in fact just a standard) room, parking should definitely be complimentary or at least cheaper than the $15/day price tag.

Jamils restaurant and bar at the Sebel is ok for a "night cap" drink, however its way too expensive for anything else. There are so many other great and cost effective dining/drinking options in Manly.

The table on the balcony was covered in dirt and mould.

At the moment there is construction work occuring around the South Tower (which is where the Superior rooms are located).

Would we go back and stay? Probably not. However its perfectly suitable for someone on a business visit.

Also, what this hotel fails to tell you is that they decide to put a $600 temporary fee on your credit card. When you phone them to clarifiy this "pending transaction", they deny everything. Suddenly a couple of days later the pending transaction is removed from your credit card. I don't mind this if they are truthful about their procedures, but to get the run-around from a typical "call-centre" curry fan is highly frustrating.

This hotel is dirty, run down and needs attention. It is not cheap and has a great beachfront location.
Nobody came out to help with our luggage, when we got to check in the staff had dirty shirts. Our room was in need of refurbishment. We had no meals there so we cannot comment on that.
We have stayed at other Sebel Hotels in Brisbane and Noosa Heads and they were in much better condition and well worth the money.
