the room was extremely overpriced and not worth the money, I did not know there was no ensuite until after I booked and paid for the room (non refundable) , we had to go past another room to get to our bathroom in the dead of night, was noisy as the room is not insulated, will NOT go back there and will not recommend it, the breakfast is also over priced for what we had.

Room Tip: stay elsewhere

Following my awful experience here in Oct 2010, I was given a voucher for a free night. It's not a refund, however better than nothing. So we revisited in June this year and had a great night. No rowdy functions, just the serenity of a truly beautiful and historic location. Full marks to the restaurant also, had a fantastic meal and service there. Only slight problem - the hot water ran out!

We stayed here in January following a recommendation. I booked on wotif in morning and we arrived 2 hours later for 2 nights including Australia Day. Was a great Sydney thing to do. We ended up with a waterfront location, somewhat private beach and wonderful, interesting grounds and history. Loved the mini bus that dropped us right into Manly (were we dined at Hugo's) and wandered around. Took the kids down to Manly for a surf early on Aust Day which was a mistake - Manly beach (surf side) is not recommended on Australia Day - all the idiots were out!
The accomodation was fantastic, the buffet breakfast was perfect. Great getatway for locals or overseas visitors. Love to go back...

This is not for the faint hearted and we did not do the ghost tour. Only go to this hotel if you like to walk around in the dark and cold. We paid almost $500 for one night's accommodation, dinner and breakfast plus $50 for a $25 bottle of wine in the restaurant. Having said that the food was great and the breakfast was terrific too. The rooms were horrible. Small and very cold. Inadequate heating and nowhere to sit. No electric blankets. The verandah was out of the question as it was so cold, windy and exposed. The next door room had shoes out on the verandah! It is not a private space, with only a plastic rattan screen to divide the space. Do not be fooled by the internet pictures as I was of a private balcony with harbour views. There is a wooden marker and lots of scrub in front - the harbour is but a distant vista. The TV did not have sound on some of the stations. The next door couple seemed to be having a much better time than us if you get my drift, the walls being thin to the extreme, but perhaps they were trying to get warm. My partner slept in her overcoat..... The shuttle bus is very average and not reliable. They don't tell you that you have to leave your car in a carpark at the top of the hill. I say go to this icon at your peril.

We were given a package accommodation, meal at Boiler House, Ghost tour and breakfast as a gift. The room was listed as a garden view but we found that our room was simply looking under the foundations of the opposite building and a bit of grass. The staff changed our room and were very pleasant about it all. We then overlooked the bush which was lovely. The verandah worked well but people further along decided to smoke and have a bit of a get together which left us with a very noisy and smoky area. NOt pleasant. Meal at Boilerhouse was delicious and service excellent. We also walked around most of t he afternoon checking out various buildings - it's really not that interesting - also, the grounds are very dull but thelittle beach is pretty and it was nice to sit on the jetty and look at the water. Staff everywhere were very helpfull and the transport vans were excellent, always on hand and efficient. The lounge areas are great with coffee and newspapers in great supply. My husband went on the ghost tour as I just don't want to go to anything like that. He came back early. His tour didn't go to some of the listed buildings as it was on the tail of another tour and couldn't get in. He said it was all a bit of a "con" although he found some of the commentary interesting enough. I stayed in our room and listened to every word and tv broadcast from the neighbouring room althoug they were clearly doing their best to be quiet. The rooms are just hopeless for neighbouring noise. I got involved in a movie but the TV suddenlty froze and then couldn't get the channel back for over half an hour. The room was comfortable and well set out although small of course. The bathroom was very very good. But not having a window is a problem and a bit claustrophobic when you have to shut your balcony doors to keep out smoke and noise. The room's heater is also very effective and you only need to run it for a short time.
We then had the worst night's sleep possible although we don't know why. The bed seemed comfortable but we both tossed and turned and were hot and cold all night all night although we were both very tired. I just felt all "wrong" in the room for no particular reason that I could think of. This is hardly the Q station fault although maybe their ghosts have wandered out of the proscribed areas.
In any case, it would be a nice place for a group to have a bit of a weekend get together using the grounds for walks, the Boiler House for meals and your own company for entertainment.
And the breakfast at Views was also very very good. Some of the staff were first class and others just shouldn't have a job. A real mixed group. But the food was very good and tables mostly cleared quite quickly.

Room Tip: get a water view room.

The RETREAT in Q Station Retreat really says it all.

My darling and I 'retreated' to Q Station for some quality time together - with some easy/casual activities (tours, walks, dinner) to enjoy. We were blessed with just the right weather - perfect for comfortably wandering around outside AND for getting warm and cozy inside. It was, in a word, delightful and I know we'll be back.

It was so refreshing to stay at a place without that generic hotel feel (although it is managed by the Mirvac group and services like booking, reception, house-keeping, maintenance, meals, etc are reliable). Even more refreshing is being able to open your doors and windows to fresh air and gorgeous settings. In the Isolation Area we had the bush on one side and the ocean on the other. I also got a kick out of all the cute fire-hose points and "minimum impact" signs throughout the property.

There are a bunch of nifty features that makes this place a special venue - history, tours, the calm little beach, architecture, the trails, the views across water to Manly, an unafraid bilby (or two), birdlife, plantlife. It's not just a base for a trip to Sydney/Manly, it's like a destination in itself.

It also looked like it would cater well to groups - families and conference - with lots of different configurations for accommodations. In that vein, if you're particular about things - you'll want to check on whether your bathroom is external/shared and I don't recall seeing any air-conditioning units.

Special mention: the Boilerhouse Restaurant. The menu is thoughtfully done. The service is great - and accommodating to our polite little demands (and late notice!). The food is *delicious*. The ambience is just right for an easy-going customer who wants a good quality restaurant experience. AND the wine list is pretty special.

My company arranged a sales conference at the Q station. I spent 2 nights in a 3 bedroom historic cottage, sharing with 2 colleagues. The cottage was big and comfortable and fortunately my fear that one bathroom might cause problems were unfounded. The hotel rooms looked nice however, the bathroom was a short walk outside and down the veranda. Not something you would want to do on a cold winters night. The resort itself is spread over a large and very hilly area, which offered amazing views of the harbour and land beyond. The meeting facilities were adequate and superbly located, again offering amazing views. Breakfast and lunch were nice (mini buffets) and the Boiler Room restaurant on the water was great. It would be a great place to escape for a few days but, I don't think I would spend more time than this here.
