This place is amazing if you're looking for fairly inexpensive fish and chips. Don't let the menu outside scare you, it is only about $15 for a decent sized fish and chips! I don't even like fish, but their fish was so fresh that I could barely taste the fishiness. We just went back for a second round of the tempera veggies... Yum!

Found this on Rialto Square in Manly - very expensive and somehow worth it in the end - $30 for lunch including a very local ale. Unique in its offerings, with a choice of fish, preparation, and sides that gave plenty of choices, healthy and otherwise.

Great location adjacent to The Corso down the alley to Rialto Square. Seafood meals are reasonably priced and perfect size. You can sit inside or outside and its not on the roadside with traffic noise. We really enjoyed a great casual night here.

Been coming to Fishmongers regularly for many years, but tonight wil be our last. Formally a great experience of fresh seafood and relaxed atmosphere, it is now extremely overpriced and offers average food and terrible service.
Inconsistent quality of food and service.
Specifically tonight: $54 for 2 small meals and 2 drinks; charged extra because we wanted a different sauce; dry prawns; unfriendly.
Really needs to lift their game to win back the locals, however unassuming tourists will keep them on business.

Manly is a very touristy sort of place, and there are lots of tacky eateries, especially in the main drag, the Corso. There are also some good ones, but you are taking a bit of a risk. I live here, so I know whereof I speak. We walk there, and home again, and it's getting to be a habit.

My rule, wherever I go as a tourist, is to seek out the places that have customers AWAY from the main drag, because they must have something going for them. Fishmongers is on Rialto Square, off the Corso, on the right as you head for the surf beach from the wharf. Go past Humphreys, the large newsagents, and about seven shops along, go down the ugly alley. It gets better.

If you are coming to Manly for fish and chips, and quite a few British people seem to do so, this is the best choice. You can buy take-away or sit in the small inside area. We prefer the outside seating when we can get it--if you want to eat at the beach, note that the seagulls at the beaches are aggressive thieves. You can see the menu on the web site.

Also, the fun police* frown on you drinking in the streets or at the beach, but you can buy ~300 mL beer and wine by the bottle, help yourself to a glass, and get into it. The staff are friendly, patient and helpful, and the food is great. They are also (small) kid-friendly, so while we usually go there as a couple, we would happily take the grandkids there. We typically spend about $30 a head, drinks included.

The other eateries on the square are quite good as well, and I will come back to one of them next time. Fish Mongers is tops! One day I will go beyond the fish and chips.

*The drinking in public rules are there to control noisy bogans (aka yobbos or rednecks) and are rarely enforced against families or sedate folk. Just don't be too blatant and plead ignorance and comply if a bumptious bossy-boots tells you that you are being naughty.
