Description: Twenty One (21) Espresso is one of Australia's oldest restaurants, founded in 1958 by John Schiffer - Father and Grandfather to the restaurant's current owners George and Michael. Twenty One was the first restaurant to introduce European style dining to Australia in the form of outdoor seating and also had one of the very first espresso machines - hence the inclusion in the restaurant name. Today, you can find traditional Hungarian and European dishes on the menu, whilst dining in a comfortable and cosy setting with warm and attentive service. The restaurant is open all day every day, should you feel like just popping in for a coffee and cake and to soak in the atmosphere.

“Great lunch venue”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 8, 2014

I met with an old friend for lunch at ‘21’ Knox St this week. I’d not been there before but will sure return. It is a smallish café/restaurant in the heart of Double Bay and obviously frequented by a lot of European style patrons in this very upmarket area. It has a history having been opened some 50 years ago. The staff were very welcoming, despite having no booking, and most attentive. Service was prompt and efficient. For lunch it was superb – the oysters natural were the best Sydney Rock Oysters I have enjoyed for a while – they were exceptional. The crumbed lambs brains well presented and the desert of chocolate mousse – to die for. Worth coming back for that alone. A great lunch, a fantastic venue, and superb selection of food on the menu.

“Hearty fare, great standard dishes”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 26, 2013

Have eaten here several times - breakfast and dinner. Service is great - it has a real family feel, and a long tradition apparently. The portions are LARGE, the schnitzel is legendary (if you come early enough, you can hear the veal being beaten up in the kitchen). I've been threatening to have the apple strudel, but haven't dared - the pieces are too big... It buzzes in the evening, particularly Fridays, when it seems that all four generations of several families invade 21 all at once. It's worth a visit just for the entertainment value. This place is a keeper, despite a somewhat disappointing wine list. I'll be back!

“Great food great service”

They coped well with our large group for brekkie, without even a blink. So anytime works for this continental style restaurant in the heart of Double Bay.

“Fantastic!!!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 18, 2013

Next time I am back in Sydney, I will stay in the vicinity of this restaurant. Cannot get food like this anywhere...wholesome, delicious, yummy and wanting more. The Matzo soup, chopped liver, crumbed mushrooms, snitzel, creamed spinach, nokedli, and magnificient duck is to die for. As I was only here for three days, after my first visit, I returned on the second and third day.
Finally, a restaurant that gives you food that you can see on your plate!! And a fantastic taste that warms the heart and delightfull staff.
WILL BE BACK SOON!!!

“Wonderful”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 15, 2013

I love the Twenty-one. My parents loved the Twenty-one, my children love the Twenty-one and now our grandchildren feel the same. This is a little gem of great Hungarian cooking in the heart of Double Bay. First owned by Yanchi Schiffer is it now owned and run by his son and grandson, George and Michael. The schnitzel, crispy roast duck and cabbage, Hungarian cabbage noodles, paprika chicken the list goes on - all delicious. There is also an excellent choice of salads (I particularly like the Haloumi and green been salad) and yummy desserts, including their world famous pancakes. It's been a favourite in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney for decades with good reason. Don't change a thing boys. Don't take my word for it, their menu is on line.
