“Bad hotel in Double Bay”
Reviewed March 10, 2013 via mobile

I stayed here for 2 nights. The location is reasonable next to shops and parks and about 10-15 mins by car to the CBD. The room was awful.. Tired, dirty, small, no view, torn carpet, missing covers on ducting, noisy and depressing. We were overcharged for parking as the owners seemed miserly and unfriendly. Don't be fooled by the Savoy name, it's worse than an Ibis. 2 stars.

We stayed for one night and loved Double Bay. It is an easy bus or ferry journey to Circular Quay. Lovely boutique type hotel. Very affordable with friendly, helpful staff. Breakfast is an excellent price, with a choice of Continental Buffet or Cooked Breakfast. We will definitely stay again on our next Sydney visit.

my wife and I stayed for a week at the end of janauary. Excellent value for money, great location for access to public transport, close to decent bars and restaurants and most of all really nice people. tried to book another couple of nights, when we returned from New Zealand, but fully booked, not surprised. This was our 4th stop on a 2 month trip booked through Mercury Direct. We were booking to a price and truth be told hadn’t really appreciated how far out of the Sydney City centre the hotel is. A 30 minute bus ride or 10 minutes by the fast cat ferry. However this in fact proved to be a boon as its position in Double Bay is very good and allowed us to escape the city hubbub.
The hotel is set in the middle of a street of upmarket fashion shops, with some good quality restaurants. The hotel layout around an atrium is very unusual and was not to our taste. Our "superior room" number 111 was a double facing the street and was overlooked by the apartments opposite meaning that drapes had to drawn for privacy. The room was spacious but felt “tired” and the one wardrobe was inadequate for our weeks stay. The bathroom was OK though the plumbing was noisy and after reporting this it improved. The A/C was efficient. The TV channels were limited. The hotel café was open until 10.00 and on our deal provided a limited continental breakfast. Additional cooked breakfasts were available at a cost. The staff were unfailingly helpful and very pleasant.

We needed a stopover hotel for two days two weeks apart in January. We did not want to pay a lot, and this hotel was very reasonable with some sound reviews. Our expectations were more than met for the price we paid, and there were some real bonuses. Yes, as others have pointed out, the decor is significantly tired... however, the beds were big and comfortable, the bathrooms were more than adequate and generously equipped with shower gel, shampoo, body cream etc,. the showers were hot and effective, the towels snowy white, thick and fluffy, the bed linen white and crisp, the pillows comfy and the air conditioning easy to use and effective. Tea, coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits were available in the room plus a small fridge, and although jaded, the rooms and ensuite bathrooms were scrupulously clean. The staff were helpful, friendly and professional whenever we approached them on both visits. Our first visit followed two concurrent 12 hour flights, and the welcome and helpfulness of the staff could not have been nicer. Our second visit entailed arriving back in Sydney at 7.30 in the morning - and the rain was falling in torrents. We decided to ask the hotel if we could leave our suitcases at reception until it was time to check in - only to be told that a similar room was available immediately, so we could check in right away - at no extra charge! Again the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff were outstanding. Our connecting flight the next day was in the afternoon, and again the rain was teeming down. We were able to stay in the comfortable modern atrium area with complimentary tea, coffee and filtered water after we had checked out until it was time to leave for the airport. The location is brilliant, right in the heart of Double Bay, surrounded br boutique shopping, cafes and restaurants, five minutes walk to the ferry terminal, three minutes walk to the bus stop for central Sydney. The hotel clearly base their charges on the tired condition of the hotel, but the things that matter all come out of the top drawer. Having booked with very realistic expectations, I have no hesitation in rating this hotel a very realistic 'excellent!'

Room Tip: We stayed in a superior double room - on the second floor and on the third floor. I cannot comment o...

As an Australian tourist in Sydney I was looking for a great location reasonable prices and friendly staff and I found all those at the Savoy. Walk 5 minutes to the ferry into Circular Quay (or a cheap tour of the harbour) 10 minutes up to Edgecliff train station to the city or Bondi Beach or 2 minutes to the bus. The great bonus is that it is on Knox St with great cafes and restaurants, trendy shops and is right on the Harbour with the Skiff Club and beach there. The rooms are older but very clean and there is a lounge room with a balcony overlooking Knox St where you can sit and drink the provided tea coffee filtered water or glasses for that champagne to celebrate being in Sydney. The Savoy is a hidden gem in a very expensive but fabulous city.

The best thing about this place is the location. It is right in the middle of Double Bay, across the road from restaurants, and shops, a short walk to the water, and 30 minute walk to Moore Park. Is is run down and not the most attractive place, the decor is very 70's, we only stayed overnight. We had a standard double room it was very basic but it was the cheapest place to stay in the area so we didn't have high expectations. The beds were uncomfortable and the bathroom was very small and smelt musty. Our room was near reception and it was very noisy, we could hear everything. We were in town for a concert so to stay overnight was fine and we would possibly stay for a weekend, max. Parking is off site and about a block away. We found the staff to be friendly and helpful. Location is very hard to pass up, Coldpay were excellent!!!

Room Tip: This place is half the cost of surrounding areas and the location if fantastic, it is worth a try fo...
