Cronulla Beach Backpackers
Reviewed March 31, 2013

I've stayed here more times than I can count, starting in October of 2011. Whenever I go to Sydney, I always stay in Cronulla. This hostel is AWESOME, full of amazing and hilarious people, and has a great little courtyard where everybody hangs out and gets to know each other. There is a blog with tonnes of information about what's going on in the area and heaps of info about the hostel, you can find it here: http://cronullabeachyha.tumblr.com
It's also less than five minutes from the beach, which is handy if you enjoy the ocean. If you want a job while you're backpacking, there are always jobs going around and the manager of the hostel is great at setting up working holiday visa jobs, there's always a way to make a bit of money if you're running low. Rooms near the courtyard are a bit noisy, but ear plugs do the trick.

Room Tip: Don't sleep in the rooms near the courtyard!

I've stayed at many YHAs and only been disappointed a few times, Cronulla was not one of those.

I stayed in a single ensuite (private room) so I can't comment on the dorms. My room was good sized, had it's own fridge (that's awesome, as you'll know if you've backpacked a bit) and the bed was surprisingly comfortable. There was some mould on the walls under the window and a wierd smell when I first checked in but a good airing fixed the smell and a few black spots on the wall never killed anyone. The shower was big and water pressure/spread was very good.

There's wifi and pay-for-use internet with Global Gossip. No complaints about that, seemed to work fine. I also had two chairs, a small table, generous shelfs/drawers for storage and a flat-screen TV.

Overall I'd say that my room went beyond what I expect from a room at a YHA, even a double/single. The walls could use some cleaning and finding chocolate wrappings in the bed was also a little surprise but neither of those things were enough to ruin my stay in any way.

There's always something that sticks out when you visit somewhere, whether its positive or negative, and the fact they lend you sandboards to go on the nearby dunes is what sticks out for Cronulla. It made the stay brilliant. The room was a pretty standard dorm room, you get what you pay for, but it was made worse by the fact one of the guys was snoring amazingly loud. However it did become a bit of a game because he was in such a deep sleep we couldn't wake him up, so we were throwing coke bottles at him and he still slept through it. We eventually ran out of rubbish to pile ontop of him. Anyway, so go to Cronulla for something different with a surfy feel to it.

Room Tip: Go in a room where there isn't the worlds loudest snorer. Yes, that's facetiousness.

Escape the hussle and bussle of the Sydneys CBD and the touristy Bondi Beach, Cronulla is the upcoming Bondi Beach minus all the tourists and overcrowding. Cronulla YHA is a great place to relax, hang out and meet some new people. Michael the owner and manager is a great bloke, very knowledgable on the surrounding areas, places to go, see and check out, helped me to find a great spot for the new years fireworks and also with finding a job while I was there...unfortunately I had booked a ticket to Melbourne and had to go. Thanks Mike greatly appreciated, Would definitely recommend it to fellow working holidayers

We originally planned on staying two nights but decided after half an hour of first checking in that we would only be staying the one. The rooms were extremely hot with not A/C so I had to go to sleep with a wet cold towel over myself. The rooms were extremely small (we stayed in a 4person dorm), and the hostel overall was pretty dirty. Apparently guests can only stay in a YHA hostel for up to 2 weeks, but longer at the managers' discretion. The majority of people we spoke to in the hostel had been there for months on end, and so because of this, the hostel was being used more like a house-dirty pots, dirty carpets etc, middle aged men running naked down the corridor while no one bats an eyelid. Woke up to find a person in my dorm with blood all over her feet as they had been cut to shreds as she walked on a lot of broken glass in the hostel that someone had not cleaned up when they had dropped it coming in drunk at 3am. Lots of noise. The positive was there was a very good shower-as long as you were lucky enough to get some hot water. I am all for 'roughing it' while travelling, but this goes a bit too far. On the plus, it was funny the day after when we were on the train out of there and makes for funny and shocking story telling when we got home....

Plus Points:

Really friendly management, will help you to find a job and they make an effort to get to know everyone staying at the hostel.
Lots of people stay at this hostel to work so there is a good group atmosphere where everyone knows everyone, but people make an effort with new people too.
Free pool table (massive plus point!) and good tv room.
Very clean (apart from some of the dorm rooms which can get a bit messy - but thats the guests not the staff!).
Good location in Cronulla - close to the shops and beach.

Negative Points:

Far from Sydney Central (though that's not really a neg point for the hostel) - about 40 mins on the train into the centre of the city.
Noisy, especially at nights at the weekend - if you really need a good nights sleep then maybe consider getting a private room.
$175 a week is normal for YHAs but is expensive if you're a backpacker on a tight budget.
