Novotel Sydney Brighton Beach
Reviewed October 23, 2012

We travelled with another couple, coming to Sydney for a family function. We booked two rooms 3 months in advance. When we arrived, one of our rooms wasn't available and we were upgraded to a suite. The staff at the reception and all the hotel employees we came in contact with were very welcoming and polite.
The bedroom in the suite was spacious, clean and had a balcony facing the bay. The beds were comfortable and the bedding nice quality. The bathroom, although well equipped, could be cleaned better: we found a used cake of soap in the shower left by a previous occupant of this room. We requested bedding for the sofa bed; sheets and blankets were brought in, but not pillows. The staff didn't offer to make up the sofa bed for us. At night there was quite a bit of noise coming from the street; even with the balcony door shut and the air con on we could hear some thumping party music from a venue down the block, but thankfully the noise died down by 11:30pm.
The service at the bar was very slow. It took about 45 minutes to serve us - 3 cocktails and a couple of glasses of beer/wine. There were no other customers at the bar when we ordered. We dined at the Baygarden restaurant and it was the low point of our stay. The restaurant was understaffed for the number of people they catered to. We ordered a la carte and courses were not brought together - some people at our table had finished our mains while others were still waiting for theirs. There were long waits between courses and the dishes weren't cleared promptly.
Breakfast was nice, the buffet selection ample and fresh fruit plentiful, but scrambled eggs tasted powdery.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay, but we stayed at this hotel a few years ago and standards were much higher then. Next time we will go to the Mariott, where we had a much better experience.

Stayed in the Penthouse room on level 14 for two nights (one night complimentary upgraded) and it was great. Spacious rooms, clean and pretty bathroom. Service was generally tip-top and the staff were professional and very welcoming.

BUT: despite excitement and satisfaction from the Baygarden seafood buffet, within the hour I spent the night in the bathroom throwing up. Considering my fiance ate with me but we did not eat all the same food, I must have eaten something singularly off. We rate the service only at 2 because when we called the night audit for bucket of ice to settle my stomach, he actually forgot about it and we had to call again after waiting for half an hour. Not cool.

That said, the Hotel and Restaurant is really amazing for those looking for a relaxing getaway.

Overall, I enjoyed my stay at the Novotel.
The location is great for an overnight stay if you having a lay-over as it is very close to the airport and its beach front positioning would make it very attractive for the traveller. My room (823) was north facing looking over the pool and tennis courts, and with the beach and airport visible in the distance. Noise was not an issue and even blustery winds did not cause an issue.
The room was quite long with the two living areas (bed and lounge) divided by the bathroom. In reality, this is a room for one/two people as the areas are not large enough for much more. The decor did not strike me as old or tired given some of the rooms that I have stayed in and the room service maintained the room spotlessly. The bathroom however did show signs of age and this did let the room down a little. However, everything functioned as expected and was clean.
The front desk maintained good service however more staff would be welcomed as it is unrealistic for one person to attend to guest enquiries and attend to the telephone as well.
The restaurant while well appointed with new decor was the only disappointment per se. It has both a menu and buffet....each reasonably priced. I would have preferred to see a more varied and interesting menu using local fresh ingredients. Instead, the menu was standard fare, surprising given the number of international visitors that could be seen at the hotel. The buffet provided a wide selection however this did not change on the few nights that I used the restaurant. The service by the restaurant manager was outstanding but skill level was variable for the floor staff....polite and well-intentioned but lacking in the skills of an experienced server.
I did not use the in-house gym as I chose to use the beach side walk/ride path. It extends both north and south and I found it safe even at night with other walkers using the path until 8:30pm ish.
Parking is available on-site at a daily charge however there is no valet service.
The purpose of my visit was business....I would consider this hotel if visiting given the location, closeness to beaches and the CBD.

As the other posters have mentioned, tired decor in rooms. The hotel is a victim of the neighborhood the boy racers blast race up and down, even with ear plugs, they ruin the experience. Get a room on the north side for the quiet. Great fitness facilities, fully equipped gym, pool, tennis courts. Some good coffee shops and restaurants right outside with free WiFi and a decent size supermarket. 2 min bus ride to the main rail station of Rockdale. Good beach in front of hotel.

The Customer service left alot to be desired. As a result we did not complain about our room but have since emailed, as it was late & I was due at the hospital early the next morning. On exiting the lift to our room, it smelt like a tired old club, air was heavy with cleaning products. On entering the room it appeared ok, we went out traight away. On our late return was when we noticed, mould & peeling paint on the bathroom ceiling, light fittings falling out of the ceiling, light globes either smashed in the lamps or none at all, the cupboard which the fridge sat in had the door ripped off, TV in bedroom didn't work, the fridge was leaking & seals damaged & the outside noise was really quite loud, it did not live up to the promise of "high end & quiet".This hotel has really gone down hill since I last stayed & based on our room & other details I would only give it a 3 star & no more. My husband also said the breakfast wasn't very good either. Definately was not what we paid for.
