“Don't Judge a book by its cover”
Reviewed November 10, 2013

I was recommended New Star by a friend, who said do not be turned off by its outside appearance.
The food is great, cheap in price and best of all it tastes good because it is (MSG free).
Offering a mix of Asian cuisine, focused mainly on Vietnamese and Thai food.
I have become a weekly regular.
Get the BBQ Pork Vermicelli salad !

“New Star shines”
Reviewed October 9, 2013

This is a humble eatery is in a small arcade in the centre of Balmain's restaurant strip, so the competition from a dozen different Asian restaurants nearby is fierce.

Yet this little place is nearly always full of regular customers. It has an authentic family-run friendliness and a pan-Asian menu that makes it a favourite with locals.

The Vietnamese beef soup (Pho) is also one of the best value dishes in Balmain. Try the lemon grass and chilli scallops, so simple and fresh. There are scores of other choices: Thai, Malay, Chinese and Vietnamese staples.

Be prepared for laminex tables and tissue boxes, self-serve cutlery and pay-up front service. No pretensions to fine dining here. Grab a small table outside in the arcade and enjoy a relaxed meal, a cool breeze and a BYO from the bottle-o a few doors up.

“Very basic and average food”
Reviewed June 7, 2013

Whilst this small cafe type eatery always appears busy, it must be the cheap prices that is the attraction. The food is ordinary and the decor is uninspiring.
Whilst it is cheap compared to other eateries in Balmain, it is not that much cheaper than other Vietnamese cafe type restaurants.
Worth a visit only if you want a cheap meal in Balmain without any finery or expectations.

“Authentic and casual Vietnamese cuisine”
Reviewed March 19, 2013

This hole-in-the-wall takeaway shop is a real gem amongst the overpriced, yuppie eateries on Darling Street.

Serving fresh, fast and authentic Vietnamese cusisine (plus dishes from neighbouring countries), I eat here at least once a week.

It's great value for money, convenient and all the staff always have a smile on their face. Pop in your order, duck to Woolies across the road to get groceries and your order will be ready.

Highly recommended.
