“Comfort food at a comfortable pub”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2013

We dined here on 2 consecutive nights, Friday and Saturday, while staying at a friend's house around the corner. We didn't book either night and managed to get a table, though we were told we were lucky, as usually you have to book either that morning or the day before on weekend nights.

Most of the pub is given over to the restaurant with a smaller more pub like drinking area at the front. There was a fire, which my husband thought was a log burning fire, but I am pretty sure is gas. Nevertheless, warm and inviting.

We dined in the back room, near the kitchen, which was great. Saturday night was obviously family night as there were loads of families with kids, but less families on the Friday night. I had the special on Friday of oxtail pie - mouthwateringly yummy. Then on Saturday I had the slow cooked 'bourginon' rib - yes one huge beef rib, on a bed of mash. Ultimate winter comfort food. My husband had the fish and chips on the Friday night and pasta on Saturday night. All was delicious and above average in quality, with good size serving - not too big, not too small. It was also above average prices - but then this is Balmain.

Service was great - fast and friendly. I probably wouldn't drive across Sydney to go here, but definitely worth the visit if coming from anywhere around inner west to Chatswood. Or on the ferry from Darling Harbour.

“Above average pub restaurant food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 17, 2013

This used to be the old Commercial Hotel, now transformed into the EHV - and a good transformation it is, too.
Beyond the friendly, leather-armchair style at the front, with plenty of specialist beers, there is a simple but excellent restaurant at the back, serving what can best be described as Sydney-style gastropub food: lots of fish and seafood dishes, plus some excellent upmarket burgers.
The fish curry is recommended as are the steaks and Wagyu burger, but it's hard to go past the mussels - a whole kilogram of succulent black mussels in one of three very good sauces. Check the specials blackboard, too.
Service is friendly and relaxed (it's a pub restaurant, after all), and prices are reasonable by Sydney standards, at an average of about $25 a main. And after the meal, you can walk down Darling Street to the ferry wharf and some of the best views of Sydney.
So, yes, recommended, especially if you want to show overseas tourists a classic Sydney pub (updated) in a classic Sydney neighbourhood (gentrified).

“Great family pub”

Without doubt, one of the best places in the Inner West for a great pub lunch that is kid friendly. The staff are excellent, as is the food, and the range of boutique beers are top notch.

“Good atmosphere and food but very average service”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 1, 2013 via mobile

I've been to the east village pub a dozen times as it is the closest pub to my house and conveniently located relatively near the Balmain East wharf.
The pub has a nice atmosphere (a vast improvement on one of the previous incarnations of this pub as the old commercial hotel) The food is pretty good and they have a large selection of beers and wine, a little pricey but still ok.
Unfortunately the experience can be let down by the bar staff who are slow inattentive and borderline rude at times.
As an example the Barman sneered at my friend when he asked for a tray to carry four drinks.
Overall I would say quite a good pub but check out the Balmain bowling club as a good alternative.

“Good Aussie Tucker!!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 22, 2012

Went to this Aussie Pub, with some friends of mine in Australia. I was visiting for a wedding of a friend. This was a great pub to sit and catch up, has a great low key family atmosphere. I saw many young family here enjoying a meal. Not much noise. I enjoyed a typical "Pub Meal" which was chips and a steak. Steak was cooked perfectly. Nothing fancy just great quality. Also a huge variety of boutique beers on offer. Love the James Squire. A great pub to enjoy a chat without the noise or the bantor.
