We dined here on 2 consecutive nights, Friday and Saturday, while staying at a friend's house around the corner. We didn't book either night and managed to get a table, though we were told we were lucky, as usually you have to book either that morning or the day before on weekend nights.
Most of the pub is given over to the restaurant with a smaller more pub like drinking area at the front. There was a fire, which my husband thought was a log burning fire, but I am pretty sure is gas. Nevertheless, warm and inviting.
We dined in the back room, near the kitchen, which was great. Saturday night was obviously family night as there were loads of families with kids, but less families on the Friday night. I had the special on Friday of oxtail pie - mouthwateringly yummy. Then on Saturday I had the slow cooked 'bourginon' rib - yes one huge beef rib, on a bed of mash. Ultimate winter comfort food. My husband had the fish and chips on the Friday night and pasta on Saturday night. All was delicious and above average in quality, with good size serving - not too big, not too small. It was also above average prices - but then this is Balmain.
Service was great - fast and friendly. I probably wouldn't drive across Sydney to go here, but definitely worth the visit if coming from anywhere around inner west to Chatswood. Or on the ferry from Darling Harbour.
