“Simple resort kind of old”
Reviewed May 10, 2012

Resort is old with no renovation. It has 4 or 5 floors with elevator. Most of the rooms have partial sea view. Our room was turned to the other side then the pool was. There is a privite beach club and one night during our 6 day stay they played live music in this beach club. The music stopped at 10 PM and was very loud so be aware of this. Rooms are simple, nice, they have everything you may need during your stay. Some rooms have kitchen. There is frindge and coffee maker in each room (our group of 5 took 2 rooms and the kitchen was in one only) I liked the housekeeping service. They kept our room clean every day.Breakfast included in the price are simple - continental. One choice from: cereal with milk, bagel, jam with cream cheese or 2 toasts with creamchees and jam. Small glass with orange juice and as much coffee as you like. But you can order full breakfast in the restaurant from menu approx 6 USD per person. The thing I did not like is that I had to stop each morning at the reception in the lobby and ask them for breakfast voucher. I do not understand why I had to do this. It would be easier to give our room number to the waiter and skip the voucher process. Next what I did not like is the pool staff. They seemed to me quite unpatient to foreign people with language barriers. They are lazy when you need something, but they are too active when they want to close and lock the chairs. They should be open by 5 pm but they start collecting the chairs much earlier so you can not relax. Again each morning you have to ask them for towels, wait for towels, ask them for chairs and they show you free ones. For 10 USD a resort fee a day per room they should behave much nicer to customers. Tip them and they start moving. The lobby is spacious. There is car rental, tour desk in the lobby. You have to pay extra for parking: 8 USD per day, or valet 10 USD per day. There is no free parking available in this area. The resort fee is 10 USD per room per day. It includes free local calls, USA today, two beach or pool chairs per room, free shuttle service to Aventura mall (three times a day) and South Beach (twice a day). Umbrellas or Tiki are not included in the resort fee and they are 5 USD a day. There is an S Bus stop right in front of the hotel and this bus takes you to South beach for 2 USD a person. We did not try it and probably it will take long drive down. There is CVS, Publix right accross the street. All the chain stores are in the neighbourhood: Ross, Marchall, Aventura Mall, MC Donals, Burger King, ...you may need car, bus to reach these. The beach is nice, water clear, area quiete.

The Thunderbird is definitely a thowback to the Miami Beach "spring break" and Americana days; unfortunately if you go for such places, as opposed to South Beach luxury or condo rentals, they are literally few and far between and naturally on the expensive side themselves by now.
While worn, the Thunderbird is still literally on the beach. I lucked out in getting an ocean view room that i didn't even request at no charge. Of course, the $249 for three nights that i was charged for ballooned 37 percent to $317 after fees and parking. How Sunny Isles Beach lets the place get away with its "water wonderland" parking lot during rainy times, only Heaven knows, but it's obviously a nice profit center at $8 per car per day.
The "breakfast" was nothing more than a small juice and bagel, with unlimited coffee, but at least the service was quick. At least this time, as opposed to a year earlier, the maids were less loud and in your face, in my view.
Don't expect a lot of help from the "concierge" or whatever the guy was supposed to be. He just doesn't do that much, period.

You could definately find a better hotel. It was not really bad, but the bathroom floor was covered with hair when we arrived, which I find disgusting. The beach is really nice, breakfast is poor, staff not really friendly. It was ok, but just ok...

Never got what we reserved, but after a chat with the manager, we had a good room, have been here before, when it was a best western, now its a days inn, its one of the original old motel typs on the beach, its a real shame trumpy bought up all the land, spoilt sunny ilse beach, as the sun goes behind all the huge ugly trumpys and blocks the sun from the beach. I really hope this little piece of hotel can get to stay. Will come back, as it is exactly what we like, quietley noisey, nice to sit and chill on the balconey in the sun, lots of life just a $2 bus ride away, bus stops right outside of hotel. And lots of eating places walking distance, Publix just cross the road, they have a great delli. Lunch time spag bog, in hotel was really nice, and the beer was good, The manager is not disrespectfull, just his way, as the week went on got to know him better, He was trying desperatly to get the pool fixed, room was clean, you cant make a silk purse out of a sows ear, This hotel is original, yes old, and fighting to stay in business. I really hope it does, we had a great time here, and will do so again.

Room Tip: Best rooms are overlooking the pool, have good views all round, bit sea, bit bar, and pool.

The room was clean and functional. tile floors and basic bathroom. lovely little balcony with great view of the seafoam green ocean and large magnificent aqua pool.
Breakfast was coffee, watered down oj and either a bagel, toast or cold cereal. Not worth considering breakfast, though for the price you could just go across to Denny's. No obvious way to adjust the thermostat, though the room was comfortable as the weather was pleasant.
Pool is only usable by hotel guests and you need a pass to get a scratchy thin towel, which the pool staff did not explain. When we asked for towels, we were told that you had to pay??? When we asked for a rag to dry the chairs, we were told to wait while the pool staff prepared reserved seating poolside. Just plain unpleasant pool manager. Could have been lovely if the staff explained what the drill was. Desk staff resolved the issue. Good location, reasonable value.

Room Tip: Ask for one near the end with Ocean view. Rooms facing the courtyard give you a magnificent view of...

Nothing turned as reserved. The manager, Michael R., treated us disrspectfully. The bed sheets were shorter than the bed, the air conditioner was very strong ( iMarch 1st ) with no chance to handle individually but centrally, the room maids delayed the cleaning of the rooms as there are very few per lots of rooms. I came back at 2 pm and my bedroom was clean with no bed sheets. I asked the maid and she said she was waiting for the laundry to send the sheets.(?????) Next day, the same with the pillow cases.

Room Tip: DO not go here!!!!!

I enjoyed this hotel but the customer services from day 1 was not great, the beach staff are very nice, and it is directly on th ebeach and not far from aventura mall ..... good for shopping etc but for nightlife it is a quiet hotel, august is hurricane season but you will have 2 bad days and the rest will be gloriuos, i would reccomend going and getting food from the nearby shops as the restaurant becomes a expensive and b fattening lol
