“It's all down to expectation”
Reviewed August 29, 2011

This is an old Hotel that is definately a "budget" type place. However it represents excellent value if you are looking for a base that has a great Location on the beach, and easy access to many places of interest. It's not ideal if you want the action of South Beach, it's definately much quieter in Sunny Isles. I stayed here twice in August both times having rooms on the 4th Floor 439, 433. Both were extremely clean and well maintained. The beds were comfortable, the bath / shower were fine and the Kitchen would be handy for some guests but we didn't realy use it. If you are looking for a good value place to stay in a nice location for a beach Holiday it's a great choice. If you like a bit more luxury, or a newer property this will not be to your taste. I have to say that I love the place, have always found the staff accommodating and pleasant. The staff in the bars are fun and will look after you, the concierge(s) have always been helpful, and the front desk have dealt with any issues in a business like fashion (laundry was out of comission one morning - I reported it and it was fixed by the afternoon) . I love it and can't wait to go back, but can understand that some people would be dissapointed as it is an older Hotel.

Room Tip: I try for romes on the South side - quieter than over the pool on busy weekends

Located on 194th (i think) and Collins, the Thunderbird looks like it had it's heyday back in the 1940s. Now surrounded by Trump Towers and other multi-million dollar properties, this hotel is good for the ocean and the pool, but that's about it. We were just looking for a place to stay for one night before heading to the FLL airport and this hotel had the best value for the location we wanted to be in. Don't expect the Ritz, people. The rooms are in dire need of a major overhaul - from as far as we could tell they had radiant heat in the floors because in the morning we woke up and the floor was like fire! The A/C was struggling to work, but it was a fine room for our purpose. The pool is great and the beach was right in our backyard - so no complaints there! Expect huge portions from the restaurant (a 50s style diner serving French food, but called Montreal BBQ - you tell me how that make sense!) , but the food was good if you don't feel like going far. They have an $8/day resort fee and $8/day parking lot across the street (which is worth the value if you just park there after you check out and go to the beach again!) Overall, I probably wouldn't stay here again as you could go up to Hallandale Beach or even Ft. Lauderdale and find nicer rooms. Definitely a unique property!

Room Tip: Check out BookIt.com - we got a much better rate than on other websites.

From the sound of some of these reviews here, I would have never booked a room, so I am glad I did not see these reviews.

To stay at a budget hotel and expect the Waldorf is quite silly, then to rate it poorly because of that type of thing is dishonest and does not provide consumers the information they need to make a decision.
Come on, one chair should = one star, I think not.

Now for the review, as with anything, it is what you make of it!
The lobby is large and looks as though this place was at the top of the hotel game before all the Trump type mega Towers were built. The hotel had a restaurant, bar, tiki bar, and out door bbq type eatery.

There was a grocery store and a CVS across the street and a Walgreens just down a block...each room had a refrigerator, so purchasing some beverages from the places mentioned was a breeze.
The grocery store even sold chicken already cookd such as lemon pepper and breaded chicken as well as other foods.
Buying this meal and sitting around the pool to eat, saved us some bucks and allowed us to further enjoy this hotel.

About the noise, come on...if you are looking for a sleepy little New England bed and breakfast, again I say you better stay elsewhere!
This is Miami, people are here to have fun, lighten up a little and soak up the enjoyment!

With South Beach only 5 miles away, there is plenty of atmosphere here, from the people to the attitudes, but if you really want to see some interesting sights, take the drive down to Ocean Ave at South Beach...oh my! As far as this location, it is in Sunny Isles which is a decent area and we had no concerns at all about safety.

Ok back to the rooms, nice, no carpets (which is good because of the sand and water), has refrigerator, kitchenette (some rooms only).

Once you get past the fact that this is not a high rollers place and accept that it is a value brand hotel, the quicker the stuffed-shirts will enjoy this place. This was a great 2 day pre-amble for our 4 days at Marathon Key, and since we went in expecting little, we were greatly surprised.

By the way, I read some complaining about the fee at checkout, they get you for 8 bucks a day for parking if you self park, which is a lot across the main road in front of the place, or they can valet you for 2 more bucks a day, and they don't even expect a tip.Another fee is a 8 buck a day hotel fee, which is for the free shuttle service and some other stuff not sire what...not really a big deal, I just figure it into the price after all its only $8. Lastly, I guess there is a free complementary breakfast, which we did not have...better ask at the front desk.

All in all this place (for what and where it was) gets good marks, and I would have no problem returning, which is how each of the other adults in my party felt (4 adults and 2 rooms, everyone feeling the same about this hotel).

Not a hotel I would want to stay in again. We were so dissapointed with this hotel which we booked through Virgin Holidays would you believe! It was classed as a budget hotel, but pricewise it was not a budget hotel conpaired to other better standard hotels in the area. Miami also did nothing for us, maybe we were expecting too much, but we found the Hotel and the area just to uninviting and unfriendly. Everything in the hotel looked tired and in need of a re-furb.

Having read reviews on this Resort before arriving, we were concerned about the standards and what we were walking into. However we found the Resort to be clean, staff were very helpful and friendly and we enjoyed the whole experience of styaing there. I appreciate we all see things in different lights however I don't think the Resort truly deserved some of things that were said about it.
Hotel is not 5* but excellent value for the money and we are lokking forward to staying again in the future.
It's location is ideal with local shops and restaurants just across the street with a local supermarket. There is a bus stop just outside the Resort with frequent services to Aventura Mall and North Miami, and to Downtown Miami from across the street.
Hotel offers a Sunday brunch at $13. Eat as much or as little as you want including champagne, fruit, and strangely pies! All of which tasted great and appeared home cooked.

Somehow I got this room for $50 per night through Priceline's name your own price. I was immediatly scared when I saw the reviews, but was plesantly surprised when we arrived. You are litterally feet from the ocean. The hotel is a little loud and the carpet was "questionable". We stayed for 2 nights, but had to switch rooms in the middle of the night due to a faulty air conditioner. The hotel is very old and does need some updates so I can see why people would be upset if they paid the rates listed on the back of the doors, but for $50 it was a great value.
