My husband and I have just returned from a week in Guayabitos and recommend Villa Corona del Mar highly. The Villa itself is lovely and comfortable, and the ocean-view rooms (we stayed in El Toro) offer "million-dollar" views of the Jaltemba Bay for considerably fewer pesos! This is the kind of place where one enjoys getting to know owners and staff, and Sean, Karen and Mike, Victor, and Michele couldn't have made us feel more welcome. Ana prepared wonderful breakfasts, which can be a challenge for some since we don't eat meat. She responded with the poise of a confident chef and produced something different and tasty each morning.
Since summer is low season, nothing was crowded either at the Villa, on the beach, or in town. Still, weekend nights were lively in the commercial zone, so we enjoyed the quiet atmosphere in the residential zone surrounding the Villa. Via the beach, it's a 5-minute walk to outdoor/palapa cafes (try Luca or Familia Vargas) and 10-15 minutes to the heart of town where there are good restaurants (try Los Tulipanes, Pizza Mona Lisa, and La Ola) several supermarkets, ATMs, and shops selling anything one might need at the beach. We rented a car in PV and used it to explore other towns along the Bay but usually walked in Guayabitos. Taxis are inexpensive so a car isn't necessary, but the beach at Guayabitos is made for walking. With its gentle slope, fine, compact sand, and lack of pebbles, it's truly a place for those who enjoy getting out on foot.
The Villa's two pools were spotless and flowering shrubs, palms, and banana trees create a beautiful atmosphere in the large courtyard. Although well maintained, not much is new and slick here--like Guayabitos itself, the Villa is a relaxing antidote to internationalized, corporate resorts in which folks avoid Mexico instead of embracing it. We enjoyed playing tennis on the funky court with very little room behind the base lines. A purist might object, but it was a fun place to work on one's volleys or try to push one's opponent back with topspin shots that drove him/her to the back fence! And how often does a person have a chance to play on a court festooned with tropical foliage and newly-fallen mangos? The guests' kitchen was a convenient place to store beer, wine, and snacks and the open-air lounge had satellite TV so we didn't miss Wimbledon! With that and free WiFi, we felt far away from the usual information overload without being entirely isolated.
It's a big world with many places to see, but Guayabitos is the kind of place people return to and the Villa is a super place to stay.
