Inn at San Pancho, Home of the GataGorda
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed March 12, 2013

Looking back on our stay at The Inn at San Pancho/Gato Gordo last winter I can honestly say that it blew away our hopes and expectations. Having travelled with our family to Sayulitas a few times we decided to give San Pancho a try. This time we left the kids at home and it was just my wife/best friend and me. Both the town and the Inn were exactly what we were hoping for. SP has a bit of a slower pace than Sayulitas but it is filled with local color, great people, quaint restaurants and the main beach was absolutely lovely. We were in SP for a week and very easily could have stretched it out to a few months!

The Inn at San Pancho is the spot! The grounds are immaculate and well laid out. The pool was as blue as can be and provided for long mornings close to home as the sun grew warmer. We stayed in two different units due to the length of our stay and loved both of them. The rooms and décor are charming, clean and well thought out. We also got to know the owner, Ilene, who could not have been more warm and engaging! She’s full of great stories, kindness and warmth, and will make sure that you have a great experience.

I should add that I take my vacations seriously and am not always easy to please. We left the Inn at San Pancho with a smile and a tan. We recommend it highly and would return in a heartbeat!

The Inn at San Pancho was the perfect launching point for our group's vacation (stayed 3 nights). The webpage showed exactly what we experienced in terms of the space, and the owner Eileen made our stay easy and comfortable. A perfect hostess. She arranged for 2 twin beds in the sizeable living room area of "Nopal" so our group of four could stay together in 1 room. Need beach towels? Check. Need lime squeezer? Check. Comfortable bed for a solid nights sleep? Check. Need to stay an extra hour or two into the afternoon? No problem. The walk to the main square/beachfront were the perfect distance to stretch your legs, and the store just down the hill had any incidentals we needed. The Inn has charm galore, our room was perfectly appointed, and the outdoor pool area super refreshing at the end of the day. A great value and welcomed like you are family. Gracias a la Gata Gorda!

We’ve stayed at five different places in San Pancho over the past six years and have carefully investigated dozens more. During the 25-30 days that we've actually spent in San Pancho, we've gotten a reasonably good sense of what the town is like and what are the places-to-stay options. Based on this experience, we can confidently say that Inn at San Pancho has by far been the most enjoyable.

We were gripped with this impression literally from the moment we entered it. Everything about it was charming, comfortable, and radiating the sense of being uniquely in San Pancho, Mexico, rather than anywhere else in the world. While not right in the center of town, it’s perhaps a 4-6 minute walk to the center of town (which is about a third of a mile from the Inn) and perhaps a 7-9 minute walk through town to the beach (which is a little less than half a mile from the Inn).

Our room (“casita”) felt more much more like a lovely, well-appointed studio apartment than a hotel room There’s a large living-room area with a nook-like bedroom area just off it, along with a good-sized bathroom and a small but well-functioning kitchen. The crowning touch, however, was a spacious deck with a spectacular view over the town, the mountains, and the ocean. Our casita, we might add, mid-price among the Inn options, but the small number of other casitas have pretty much the same general amenities; i.e., differences among qualities of the different casitas, though they exist, seem to be relatively minimal.

You emerge from your casita into an outdoor common area consisting of a small complex of gardens, chairs, tables and recliners that are mostly, but not entirely, centered around a lovely, crystal-clear swimming pool. The biggest challenge at any given moment was trying to decide whether to hang out on our private deck or in the swimming-pool area. Even though the Inn was full when we were there, there weren't very many people in the outside area -- it’s is sufficiently small that we can't imagine that it would ever feel crowded.

And last, but definitely not least, there’s Eileen, who runs the place. She’s terrific! In the many small inns/B&B’s in which we’ve stayed over the years, we've rarely had the experience of not liking whomever was in charge; indeed, most have been delightful. But Eileen was at another level. She’s energetic, funny, genuine, widely knowledgeable, multi-talented, extremely friendly, and beyond the call of duty in helpfulness. She’s one of the few people we’ve met on our travels with whom we’d like to become actual friends rather than just passing-through acquaintances. We hadn't been there an hour before we were planning our next trip back.

San Pancho is very laid back and so is Gata Gorda. And yes there is a cat lazing around here. Our suite ( the largest ) was spacious and had great views. Bed was comfie and views were awesome. I loved sitting on the terrace in the morning watching the flocks of birds fly over.

A bit pricey for San Pancho but an enjoyable stay.

I came here with a friend at the end of November to escape the gray rainy days in Portland, Oregon and to take in the natural beauty and culture of Mexico. We stayed in the Casa Agave which was spacious, clean and beautifully decorated. The bed was so comfortable and the only thing that got me up in the morning was the prospect of coffee and bird watching from our veranda. Our daily luxury problem was deciding whether to walk to the beach or stay poolside with the jungle, birds, and butterflies as our backdrop. The owner Eileen is a fantastic Innkeeper - very helpful, informed and attentive. She really went out of her way to make us feel welcome. Thanks Eileen! We were very sad to leave your oasis in this friendly, beautiful little town. We will be back.

The Inn sits high up on hill with great views of the ocean. It is a short walk to restaurants, stores and the beach yet it feels so luxuriously removed. It is very charming with beautiful Mexican decor, flowering shrubs everywhere and a relaxing pool area. The rooms have kitchenettes with coffee and water. The Innkeeper, Eileen is very helpful with suggestions about where to eat, shop and what to see. Horseback riding, massage, boat trips and other excursions are only a few of her suggestions. The perfect combination of serenity and excitement!

A great place to have a retreat or group get together! The personal attention to detail in each unique villa, fresh towels by the pool, bottled water in each kitchenette, a comfy terry robe, and great books to enjoy make for an effortless relaxing vacation. Eileen, the Inn keeper, was non intrusive yet always available to suggest restaurants, help make reservations for horse back riding... The blooming tropical trees & flowers set along the salt water pool was heaven. I walked a few minutes to town in the morning for my cappucino then to the beach. San Pancho is such a friendly authentic Mexican village with great restaurants & shopping minus the crowds of a more touristy spot. Will definetly be returning.
