Interesting that the reviews are so mixed here. We were already sitting in the bar when reading Trip Advisor. Service very polite and attentive. Both of us ordered steaks and both were very good quality. Waited acceptable time for arrival. Chips ok but not as good as a previous reviewer had related. We were very happy with our drinks, food and service - recommended.

We used to very much enjoy the meals here but on returning after a two year absence we noticed a distinct difference. Both the food and service have taken a turn for the worst sadly.

Good coffee and cakes at reasonable prices, plenty of comfy sofas and chairs and ample quiet workspace for business meetings with wi-fi access. I live and work in mid Wales and meet all my clients in the Royal Oak. I heartily recommend their fishcakes with sweet chilli sauce. Yummy - and just the right portion size for weight conscious business women who still want to eat well.

The restaurant is in the hotel and is the most “posh” of dining options in Welshpool. Dining room well laid out and pleasant ambience. There is a good choice of food and it was tasty but in my opinion it was too expensive. The main negative though was the speed of service – it was SO slow.

I don't like to slate businesses in this current climate, but the Royal Oak really do not try hard enough. We used to like eating here, but attention to detail has really slipped. The staff are friendly enough, but seem inexperienced and lack training/guidance. They are let down by the chef though. When the food does come, there is usually something wrong with it. There is not much competition for decent restaurants in Welshpool, and they could do really well. The place lacks atmosphere and is generally a bit "tatty" around the edges.
