Just returned from another relaxing break at the Old Vicarage. We began each evening with tea and home baked scones in the drawing room after an invigorating day of walking in the beautiful spring countryside. This was followed by a hot bath in the large, ball & claw footed bath, ready for pre-dinner drinks. Paul, as ever, produced a menu worthy of any Michelin rated restaurant. In fact, we gave up eating out after our first visit here! The wine menu complemented the meal and local cheeses added even more flavour. Local meat used by Paul is available to buy from Ludlow should you wish to take top qulaity meat home for later. Breakfasts are large and tasty and set you up for the day ahead, the sausages are sublime!
The Old Vicarage provides us with a welcome and much needed break every year, we come home rested, relaxed and happy. The surroundings provide comfortable victorian splendour and there is a wonderful attention to detail that even includes morning tea in bed.

Room tip: Get there in time for afternoon tea and eat in!

We came back at the Old Vicarage for the 3rd time at the beginning of this year and it was just as enjoyable as before. We love the amazing house and the wonderful, forgotten by time atmosphere of the whole place. The hosts are chatty, if you are in the mood for conversation and stories about the place but they never impose and you are left to enjoy the peacefulness of the place if you wish to do so. Last but by no means least, Paul is an amazing chef. He made the best desert I have had in a long long while.

This is a stunningly situated house in the Welsh Marches. Surrounded on all sides by spectacular high rolling countryside, fields, forest, woodland, the air so sweet and clean. You pull back the curtains in the morning and gaze out across the central Welsh mountains, the clouds and sunlight streaming across the mountain tops.
The house itself is a marvel. In grey stone, high Victorian, beautiful and characterful on the outside, the inside has been wonderfully and incredibly restored to the highest quality in a Victorian style which is almost impossible to describe except to say that every room is full of talking points - from the grandfather clock in the study, to the wallpapers to the brass beds.
To just focus on the design though would be to ignore just how comfy and warm and comforting the whole house is. There is nothing up-tight about it. And for that one must thank the wonderful hosts John and Paul. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel special and welcome and relaxed. Tea in the drawing room was set up in front of a roaring fire, with home-made scones and jam, supper was an amazing four course affair specially cooked, breakfast was a wonder. And all along both John and Paul were happy to chat and advise and never felt obtrusive. They have perfected the art of welcoming people into their home and making them feel relaxed and pampered.
We went for walks, we had soaking hot baths, we ate wonderfully (both here and at the nearby Stagg Inn which was brilliant) and we were gutted to go after just 2 nights. We will definitely return one day.
The attention to detail really stood out. The small vase of snowdrops, freshly picked from the beautiful garden surrounding the house, on the mantlepiece in our bedroom was a lovely touch. Thanks John and Paul.

I found the special place I was seeking when I saw The Old Vicarage on the TV. John and Paul were presented as hosts who offer a high standard of bed and breakfast in a country house setting and they, their house and thesurroundings all impressed . My expectations for a five night stay in the summer were therefore high and were well exceeded. It was such a revitalising experience that I revisited in the autumn with the same success and the added benefit of anticipation.

The house is a splendid Victorian mansion, decorated to very high standard in a Victorian style; lots of detail but somehow not fussy. I especially love the ecclesiastical effects, the lightly tinkling chiming clocks, the open fires in the autumn and the huge range of books available for browsing.

John and Paul show their attention to detail in everything they do. Their care for visitors is outstanding; always there when needed but never intrusive, they truly welcome you into their home.

What I didn't expect was the beauty of the setting; rolling hills and stunning views from every side. Also, I anticipated good food but didn't realise how great it would be. The only stress is whether succumbing to Paul's full English breakfast ( all items skilfully and locally sourced) enables you to do full justice to the freshly prepared bowls of fruit, cereals, and home-made bread and jams. A dilemma I womanfully face! To this I add Paul's superb four-course dinners and meals at the neighbouring Michelin establishment. Food lover's heaven indeed.

A futher joy is that the other guests are varied and, so far, splendid company during breakfast and shared dinners. I intend to check that out over the seasons, Spring and Winter to go. Can't wait!

From the warm welcome on arrival, making us feel like treasured friends, to the gift of a pot of Paul's sublime Plum & Damson jam on leaving, our stay was faultless. The Old Vicarage is beautiful, gorgeously restored, wonderful clocks, the atmosphere of a quietly luxurious Victorian country house - I felt as though I should have been dressed in period costume as for a private house party. The lovely tea & scones on arrival in the warm study with log fire, the glorious food provided for our dinner on the first night (and I being a vegetarian married to a carnivore was given as much pleasure from the food as my husband) and the comfortably luxurious room combined with the friendly and warm welcome from the proprietors to make us feel relaxed and happy from the moment we arrived.
The bedroom was spacious and warm, the bed comfortable with clean crisp linen, and a beautiful view over the gardens to the village church. The generous and pleasant breakfasts are a treat. It was a shame that time and the weather conspired to prevent us exploring the gardens, if these are as wonderful as the house I'm sure they have a great deal to offer. I hope on our next visit we can see the gardens properly.
