“Far Better than expected”
Reviewed June 30, 2013

We had stopped at the Wynnstay once before a couple of years previously when it was the only place in Machynlleth that was open for food as it was an early closing day in town (they still have those in mid Wales). Then we had a very average meal. This time however this it so different and so much better.
My wife and I called at the Wynnstay on 28th June for a quick lunch while en route from North Wales to Cardiff. The menu was quite extensive and featured local produce. We both chose Dyfi sewin at £16.95 as the town is on the River Dyfi (can't get more local than that) and the helpful staff told us that it was currently the season for sewin and the fish was fresh not frozen. The meal was delicious, the fish was perfectly grilled and accompanied by mashed potato and lightly boiled fresh vegetables with butter. The service was efficient and friendly and sitting at a window table we could watch the action on the main street. All in all a very pleasant lunch and excellent value for well prepared fresh local produce.

“Good brick oven pizza was a welcome surprise”
Reviewed June 16, 2013

My daughter had about had it with "pasties" of all kinds when a friend recommended the pizza at the Wynnstay. We were doubtful -- I'm going to admit it, I'm from New York, it takes a lot for me to be impressed by a pizza -- but pleasantly surprised. The dough was hand tossed, and the crust quite thin. We ordered two pies -- a goat cheese, peppers and artichokes and leek (after all, we're in Wales), sausage and bacon. Both had good flavor, although the execution on the vegetarian pie was particularly sloppy, with all of the (too chunky) toppings right in the middle, making it impossible to eat without a knife and fork. Still, the food was very enjoyable, and the service good. I would definitely recommend it for something a bit different in Wales.

“Best food in Machnylleth”
Reviewed June 15, 2013

I've eaten here a few times over the years, always returning whenever I come back to the town because of the memory of the first meal I ate here: a piece of roast lamp that was transcendently, life-changingly good. Nothing's quite lived up to that since, but neither has it ever disappointed. A good menu, generous portions that are superbly cooked, and all served in a very characterful old pub (get the table by the fire on cold days...). Save room for the cheeseboard: simply the best selection, in the most abundant quantities, I've ever seen. A serious experience for the cheese connoisseur.
