A huge site covering all sorts of wildlife environments from woodland to wetland. There are strategically placed hides scattered around the reserve so you can settle down with your binoculars and enjoy the "spectacle".

Stout boots are essential if you want to wander around the many marked trails - be prepared to spend most of the day there if you choose to cover the lot!

We found the staff to be welcoming and knowledgeable.

The only minor "downside" is the lack of a comfortable "Tea Room" providing light refreshments.

Entrance is free for RSPB members.

We broke a long journey here on 27th September and were fortunate to see the Glossy Ibis from the new hide. We love the tranquility of this place, and watched a Spotted fly catcher for ages from one of the paths- magical. You can get drinks and snacks from the Visitors centre, where we were given a warm and friendly welcome. Fantastic mix of habitats so you get to see a wide variety of wildlife. The new boardwalk was excellent, over a boggy area, so lots of interesting plants and insects there.

Paid my first visit to Ynys hir on Monday 23rd Sept, on what felt like the hottest day of the year in this beautiful corner of West Wales. If you love nature, wildlife, peace and tranquillity you will LOVE this place. Miles of walks, through woodland, flooded fields, and lots of hides (which are very clean and tidy) especially liked the hide that is high up in the wood with stunning views across the Dyfi estuary.
There are toilets at the visitors information centre, but no café, but take your own food and drink as they have many places around the reserve that you can sit and eat. Maybe not the place for children unless they are interested in wildlife. Very quiet when I was there (out of season I guess) so I felt as if I had the place to myself, which was great. Will have to go back next year as I didn't cover it all...a really great day out. Also the Dyfi Ospray Project is just 3 mile up the road, so you can visit both places in one day :)

A lovely place for a walk but if you want to see its special birds, you have to come in May/June. We were here in late July and saw super-smart Siskin, lots of toadlets and nice Four-spotted Chaser. But too late for most things.

RSPB needs to think more about engagement, and how to help casual visitors make the most of their reserves even in the summer doldrums. If visitors encounter nothing, why would they return?
