“Surprised at so many 'Excellent' reviews”
Reviewed July 31, 2012

We like going to British b & bs, having stayed in about 8 in the last year - every one was a unique and, on the whole, very pleasant stay. We enjoyed our 4 nights at Maenllywd Guest House - for example mid-Wales is a lovely area, being in Machynlleth town suited us (the market on Wednesday is great), we received a warm welcome and had some good breakfast-time chats.

Our bedroom was nicely decorated and comfortable, if a little small. The breakfasts were quite good but nothing more than we expect and didn't match up to several we have had in the last year.

Parts of the guest house need attention. The entrance (at the rear) is really shabby and the woodwork in hallway and on the stairs could do with redecorating. There was a serious plumbing problem in our bathroom that defeated Gareth's efforts to fix it - this was clearly not a new problem. The huge rear garden is wasted - why not a table and chairs and perhaps even some shrubs dotted around.

Taking everthing into account, I believe Maenllwyd Guest House is 'Average' - I am very surprised that 50% of reviewers rate it as 'Excellent'.

We stayed here for one night in July on a biking trip across wales.

When we arrived, there was no one in as we were a bit ahead of schedule, but they showed up really fast.

We parked our bikes in the garage and were shown our room. the room was average, the bathroom was old, and cracked; the tiles on the floor was loose, and toilet acted up at times.

The rest was good, good breakfast and a pleasant host

This is our second stay at Maenllwyd Guest House and once again Gareth was most welcoming and cooked up a hearty breakfast setting us up for the day! Everything you will need in a very clean and comfy room!
We will be back again some time next year if not before if we are visiting Powys!
Highly recommended!

Miss this friendly Guest House and you miss out!

Just got back from 2 nights stay in Room 5 - only hit head twice on beams! Nice room with chairs to sit on a bonus. Easy to find, and Gareth was pleasant & helpful. Good breakfasts with fast service. Gareth if you are reading this, we found the rain just at the border and it tipped down all the way past Birmingham!!!
One tiny niggle to make this a balanced review - sorry - the bathroom could do with a little bit of a makeover: nothing major honest...but we loved the room decor and bed (we have slept in some awful beds here and abroad, believe me) was fine. Top marks for having 2 pillows each - made a nice change not to have to ask for extras. Also easy walking distance into town.

Would definitely recommend.

This was the second time that I've been to stay with work. Gareth is so accommodating and friendly - makes you feel right at home from when you first arrive. I've stayed in room 1 and 5 and both were comfortable and had everything you could need. The rooms were well maintained, comfortable and homely. The breakfasts are an absolute must as well! I just hope I get the chance to come back and stay a third time.
