It might be the only pub in the village, but the Penrhos Arms is a comfortable place with friendly staff and serves really excellent food.

Particularly recommended is the lamb shank and the beef & ale pie from the restaurant menu, really superb.

If you're in the area, please support this traditional 400-year old hostelry with your tourist cash, we did.

Just returned from a 1 night stay. Checking in is from 18.00hrs, we arrived a little early and received a friendly welcome and showed to room 1 (which I think is the best one) which has tons of character! Four poster bed and appeared to be newly decorated to a high standard. Bed very comfortable, spacious, high beamed ceiling, lovely bedding and fresh white towels. On suite bathroom with shower, was very tastefully decorated, very clean and well supplied with toiletries, Tea, coffee and bottles of water provided in the room. This is a very old building so usual low doorways and unexpected steps that give it character. Very disappointing evening meal! My chicken and chips looked like road kill it was that dry and over cooked, didn't complain as staff so friendly. Food appeared to be out of the freezer, no home cooking here. I noticed a lot of uneaten food left on plates! But breakfast was lovely. freshly traditional cooked breakfast and toast and cereal available. Great for a 1 or 2 night stay.

Room Tip: Room 1 excellent!

This pub with rooms is convenient for walkers on the Glyndwr Way. It is by no means exceptional but is quite adequate with decent beds, hot showers and an adequate restaurant.

I do have to warn of the "heat" of the chilli con carne. Three of our party tried it, all sent it back due to the exceptional chilli heat. Unless you like your food vindaloo plus, avoid.

Stayed Saturday night in Room 3 which was a huge room. Very pleasant with lovely complimentary bits, even Welsh bottled water. No bath, but a nice ensuite. The staff were all extremely helpful and pleasant. Lovely breakfast. The hotel has no view from room except road (quiet), but is surrounded by outstanding scenery. Our room was warm as the lady ensured our heating was on. There were log fires throughout the downstairs bar and restaurant. The hotel was built in the 1600s and has so much character (watch your head!!).

We did not eat an evening meal in the hotel, choosing to eat at the excellent, candlelit 'Black Lion' near Machynlleth. Visited the Brigands Hotel for a coffee - very disappointing place which looked worn. Would certainly stay at the Penrhos again with pleasure.

We stayed at the Penrhos Arms as we wanted to be near Machynlleth. It was okay but not value for money. The room was on the smallish side with very poor lighting and extremely cold. The inclusive breakfast was very basic but again okay. We ate there one evening and thought it expensive for what it is. On another evening we ate at the "sister hotel" the Brigands which was dreadful, very cold, poor service and disappointing food.

Room Tip: Don't stay there. There are alternatives in the area which are much better value.

The usual hotel we use when visiting Machynlleth was fully booked, so we took a chance on thie Penrhos Arms and are glad that we weren't put off by the previous negative reviews. We found this country pub to have plenty of character with welcoming staff and locals. We were given an upgrade to the four poster room and found it (and the rest of the pub) extremely clean and comfortable.. Soft furnishings, carpets and decor in this room all appeared relatively new. We did not have an evening meal but breakfast was good. Considering the (very convenient) location on the side of the A470 an easy 6 mile drive from Machynlleth, traffic noise did not disturb us. All in all a very enjoyable stay and we would certainly be happy to visit again.
