“A change to the worst”
Reviewed April 23, 2013

We used to come at least once a week for a meal
But now we wont go because after the menu changed we as vegans have no options there.
Last time we went there we waited for a good 45 minutes for a meal.
and when it came it was below standards.
Luckily the former manager was on site and she refunded us.

Its a good Pub and nice place to drink in but I do not recommend it for food.

“Waited almost an hour for our dinner after ordering, which was at best when it finally arrived mediocre......not worth the wait!”
Reviewed April 10, 2013

Popped into hotel with intention of getting quick dinner as kids were hungry. When we arrived eating area was fairly quiet but did get busy not long after. Ordered food and within 15 minutes people around us were getting their food. Perfect.....ours should be next we kept telling kids who were tired and hungry. But alas not to be. We chased up order after 45 minutes and were told it is being plated now. It took another 10 minutes arrive. My cod looked and tasted like it had been in the deep fat fryer for an hour and my husband's burger tasted like it had been frozen and processed. Shame as actually it was quite a nice pub inside.

“Very average. Only worth a visit for the beer .”
Reviewed April 10, 2013 via mobile

Visited at 7pm on market day. Quite busy, clean newly refurbished with four really good real ales. Thats where the praise ends. I had the pork in cider and apple sauce special and special it wasnt !.
Enormous portion but caserole mash carrots and peas all completely tasteless.
Blindfolded you wouldnt have a clue what youd eaten.
Used the place lots in the past but wont be using it for food again.
Id recommend fish and chips takesway from Hennigans top shop rather than this.
Sadly Mach is still missing a good affordable evening eatery.

“Stalwart effort but still work in progress”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

The White Lion has always been a good addition to Mach's array of beer, food and stay options. Its best asset is (still) the brilliant beer garden - it's behind the pub (so away from the main road), a decent size with lovely stone/ slate walling (acting as wind break, bit of a sun trap and a bit of seclusion) and has the best beer garden view of the Dyfi Valley. Throw in the recent refurbishment and all this will keep the White as a stalwart for both locals and tourists.

The recent refurb has a good feel to it (and it needed it) - they've opened out the space more (e.g. old pool/ darts room which was rarely used has been brought more into play). As a place shooting to be busy, with good, reasonably priced food, decent parking, central location, great beer garden, music etc - there's going to be a lot of throughput. The new decor will need to stand up to a lot of use and in 9-12 months it'll be interesting to see whether it's stood up well or not and whether the refurb was a good lick of paint or a proper job.

As commented on elsewhere, the menu outside looks interesting, is reasonably priced and includes plenty of good reference to homemade dishes. However, there was in fact only 4 dishes on the day we visited (3 meat roasts and a single vegetarian option). In general we got the feeling there's a fair few teething issues on the kitchen front. Not just because of the limited menu but also as the food itself was mixed - from good to bad.

The main meat dishes (we had lamb and pork roast - both tender and nice) and the vegetarian main (vegetable lasagne terrine) were good as were the gravy (for the meat dishes) and a nice dressing (for the lasagne salad) but the salad was paltry, the roast potatoes not really roasted and the vegetables were somewhat slaughtered.

The service was also mixed. The staff are friendly but not fully trained yet (a chap ordering next to me at the bar asked a few questions about the ales - where from, which smoother, recommendation) and the member of staff couldn't answer any of them). On our own order, one of dishes that came out was wrong (not what we ordered) but we got the feeling that it must have been us that ordered wrong.

Apart from the beer garden, the atmosphere inside is good and can be very good - open fire, a couple of lovely big bay windows, occasional music in the evening.

It's a good venue, in a great spot with lots of good things to offer - excellent beer garden; good sized eating space/ covers; window seating; evening music; accommodation; busy atmosphere - heaps of potential, if the service and food can be improved. So as it stands perhaps work in progress.

“Poor staff. Poor choice”
Reviewed April 4, 2013

I like the new decorations and it look a lot cleaner since the recent refurb. No friendly welcome at all. Soft drinks are expensive. Poor choice- only 1 vegetarian option. Seated at a dining table but then ignored by several members of staff for over 20 minutes until we left. Still nobody asked why we were leaving. The pub was very quiet at the time. I will return as I'm sure these must be teething problems.
