Have just been for a meal at the newly decorated White Lion.

The menu outside is very interesting and reasonably priced offering interesting homemade dishes dishes. However, on entering the pub there was a basic menu offering 2 types of curry, gammon, cottage pie. Otherwise the only offerings were baguettes and jacket potatoes.

We ordered a cottage pie and roast lamb baguette at the bar with our drinks. The waitress then came to advise that the cottage pie had run out. This was at 6.15pm ! I then ordered the lamb baguette.

The meals were served quickly and were accompanied with hot chips and a rather tired side salad. We ate the meal which was OK and was leaving the pub within 35mins of arriving.

The baguettes were £8.50 so overpriced in my view.

It is a shame as we were looking forward to the promise of a nice meal but the content did not live up to the advertising. While we were there another couple actually walked out when they saw the menu. Perhaps we should have done that. There's a nice fish and chip shop up the road.

Looks a bit uninspiring from the outside but inside the fire's going and the staff are very friendly. Found the food to be good and not overpriced. Great for people watching if you can get a window seat. Would go again.

A very friendly pub with great beer. The food was reasonably priced and very well cooked and presented. We will use this place again!

Centrally located in Machynlleth with a large car park to the rear. Whilst it is one large room - lots of oak beams - there is a natural divide for the bar area and restaurant area plus a delightful open fire place. As we ate here on a Sunday - mid afternoon - we chose mains from the specials board - roast Welsh beef, roast leg of lamb and fillet of local trout (with starters from the standard menu). When I asked the barman if the lamb was well cooked he went to check this with the kitchen. If paying by credit card, rather than leaving card behind the bar, the card details are completed on a chitty which is then returned after paying - not seen this procedure before but thought from a card security perspective a very good policy.

After placing the order took the drinks back to the table and promptly knocked over a bottle of alcohol free beer. Waitress immediately came with a cloth and although it was totallly my own clumsy fault the owner / manager who saw me knock over the bottle said I could have another bottle complimentary - which was a very nice gesture indeed.

The soup was hot and tasty, good size portion of mushrooms with a nice little salad on the side which two of us shared. Mains were all excellent and the lamb well cooked. The roasts were accompanied by two generous dishes of vegetables - carrots, peas, caulifower cheese, cabbage and sprouts (the trout already came with peas and salad) plus boiled and roast potatoes.

On paying the barman asked if everything was fine with the meal. Would certainly recommend and if we are in the area again will revisit.

but the food could be better. Perhaps this is unfair but with a position dominating the high street I had expected the food to be cooked better. Its ok pub food. But I had expected something a little more thought out.
