“Water Break”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2008

The location cannot be surpassed and the view from the hotel rooms facing the lake are magnificent. Walks are great and there is plenty to see and do.

That said, the hotel needs a bit of wake up call. We stayed in standard room facing the lake, the decor needs updating, the window frames replacing - very windy and you certainly feel the draught. Lighting is poor and the heating inadequate - but these pale into insignificance when considering the bathroom. What a disaster! The whole room needs to be scrapped, circa 1980 at a guess. Shower did not work at all, only managed to get cold water, bath tucked into corner with no light and nice draught from nearby window. No storage, one tiny shelf for everything, carpeted throughout - not a good idea. Heating inadequate.

To add insult to injury during our stay water went off - not the hotel's fault apparently but no-one contacted us, no information. Billions of gallons to look at through the window but nothing coming out the taps! Hotel food is very average - sprouts still served with the mixed veg!

Pub is terrible and food there awful. beer just as good! Cold, horrible place. Could be improved with ball and chain.

All in all a great deal of improvement required but the views are stunning and the location breathtaking. Just a pity about the hotel really, could be so much better.

After travelling for 4 hours we manage to find this lovely hotel. We arrived at dark so we could appreciate the view at arrival and that probably made our breakfast even more special! What a view! The food in restaurant was excellent and staff very friendly and helpful. Our room was with a garden view, spacious and clean. The only thing we didn't like was the pub next door. What a dive!! Awful beer, smell of stail beer and not very well kept.

Have just returned from a three day New Years Break break at Lake Vyrnwy. This is a fascinating country house hotel with a brilliant location. The views from most rooms are breath taking and one of the best features of the hotel.

The activities and celebrations were well organized though not quite on the level of last years.

I found the food to be of a good standard and any complaints were dealt with promptly and with no fuss.

This hotel is mostly staffed by locals, although there are also some European staff, the service was always polite if a little slow at times.

We stayed in the older part of the hotel and found our room to be of a good size (Rm31) with a comfortable bed and large bathroom. The bathroom whilst clean does need a little more care particularly the paint work, mastic and grouting which all seemed rather tired.

The new rooms and Spa area are now open and many of the guest I spoke to were pleased with this part of the accommodation. My wife enjoyed a head and foot massage for over an hour for a charge of £50. She felt it was relaxing and worth the money.

Overall this is not a cheap hotel though I did think that it just about gave value for money over the New Year.

This hotel is just beautiful. This was the second time we had visited and it was even better this time. The location is fantastic, the views amazing, the food to die for and the room perfect. The staff are so helpful and friendly. Sitting in front of a roaring log fire, having afternoon tea with hailstones lashing at the window - heaven! If there is one criticism it is why, when the bathroom is so large, is the shower cubicle so small?

The location of this hotel is simply stunning. The room I stayed in is 37 prem room, which we didn't ask for but was upgrade to, along with the cost!!.

The are loads of staff yet the service is slow, not upsettingly so, but given how many staff hang around it does annoy somewhat after time. They have daft rules such as afternoon tea is ordered at reception and not with the catering staff.

The rooms a nice, clean and looked after, but for the price of staying they should be far better. Sorry, but the expectation when you are charged such a price is raised and simply not met.

This is without question a place to visit.... possibly once due simply to the price. There are some lovely B&B places around which offer some great bedrooms and a fraction of the cost and this is from a person who wouldn't previously stayed at such a place.

The food was okay, but the breakfast and morning service....wow it was poor. the service slow and the breakfast, a full English was tiny and really quite disappointing....again raised expectations....

The management really needs to sort out their pricing policy, procedures and service levels if it is to claim such a status in Wales. There is a lot of competition in Wales, and they beat this place hands down on service and price.....

  • Liked — The views from the Premier Rooms.....stunning
  • Disliked — The cost, value for money

We have stayed at this hotel on two occassions and this weekend decided to visit the hotel as part of a day trip out. When we have stayed in the past the service has been terrible, for example having to wait 30 mins + to order drinks form the hotel bar. If I remember correctly there was also no room service and you could not have breakfast in your room - this is standard at most hotels that charge the kind of rates this place charges.

Also, be warned that the hotel do hold weddings. If you are staying on a weekend when a wedding is being held be careful about which room you have, the noise when we stayed on one occassion meant we could not sleep and the guests (as you would expect) do take over the hotel.

Anyway, back to this weekend, we decided to dine in the pub next door to the hotel (I presume owned by Lake Vyrnwy Hotel). The service and food was terrible. It took a good 20 mins of waiting at the bar to be asked what we wanted to order and a further 35mins for out food to arrive. Staff seems to have no organisation and while people were waiting to be served at the bar, staff we randomly walking around, shuffling menus around, basically doing anything apart from taking orders! The food was appaling, the majority of our party ordered the roast chicken lunch, this came as slabs of chicken portions with the bones (I found it hard to determine which parts of the chicken!). The potatoes were discussting and the veg only just warm. I couldn't belive we had waited so long for such an awful meal. Usually when you have a roast dinner you are presented with carved meat not what looked to be the left overs!

When the waitress came to collect the plates, there was no question asked about whether we enjoyed the meal etc, however we did ask to complain to the manager. The lady collecting the plates was helpful and informed us that there was no manager however she said someone would come to have a word with us! Litterally the minute this lady left our table she had a discussion with another lady, saying that we would like a word with her. We waited about 5/10 mins and she didn't even bother to come and see us. We left thinking that we did not want to ruin our day because of this place.

I was looking to book a break here next year, however this experience has now highlighted, yet again, the lack of service at this hotel. My husband says that he is voting with his money, i.e. will not go back and why should we pay to receive such poor service etc.

Basicaly all this hotel has going for it is the lovely view and nothing more. To summarise, the pub is terrible, the service in the pub and hotel is also terrible, the rooms are shabby and need a good clean and the car park is tiny so there is never anywhere to park your car. Also, I can't belive if you are a resident that you have to pay to use the spa - what a rip off!

If you like lovely views, dont mind dirty/shabby rooms, high prices and terrible service, book this place!

Having stayed here before and experienced problems, ie poor service in restaurant and cleaning trolleys permanently left on corridors, i was unsure what to expect. Our room was in the new wing and was a premier lake view. The room was definitely a hit and was really nice, apart from the height of the shower, built for midgets! The food in the restaurant was ok, good main course, but weak starter and desert ( tiny portions of cheese). Service here was better, but the service at check out was poor with staff taking 3 attempts to get our bill right.

My main gripe is with the spa. Facilities in it are extremely limited and treatments are expensive, £80 for a massage. What i really objected to was that residents have to pay £35 per day (!!!) to use the spa. This is ridiculous. I have never stayed in a hotel where residents pay to use the spa, especially when there is no pool. Management should rethink their policy on this. The spa was empty apart from us having the treatment and then leaving.

Overall, however, we enjoyed our stay and i think that the hotel has improved. The view over the lake remains the best feature.
