“AWESOME”

An awesome palace, it's easy to imagine the activity here, helped by the superb information boards in each room. The climb to the roof was worthwhile for the view and photographs of the cathedral

“Never thought I would enjoy it half as much!”
Reviewed August 26, 2013

but I definitely did. From the outside, it looks very much like a shell of what it would have looked like in its hey days. The charge is minimal so we thought why not have a look now that we're here. When you start walking around the palace, you will notice that there is actually plenty to see and if the weather is good to you, you can climb as well to some very good vantage points as well within the palace.

Depending on how much information you would like to have about the palace, you can get a full on guide book from the visitors centre or otherwise there are information boards dotted around the palace with sound guides as well.

Well worth a visit

“An Unexpected Delight”
Reviewed August 25, 2013

We called into St David's during our Pembrokeshire family holiday, and chose to visit the Bishop's Palace. This is a venue where you can spend as much or as little time as it suits you to. We thoroughly enjoyed touring the cathedral and it's many nooks and crannies, locating the Queen's seat in the Choir, reading the intricate carvings, identifying coats of arms on the ceilings etc etc. There was a young girl giving a beautiful performance on a harp while we were there, which added to the ethereal atmosphere.

Each area has it's own entry charge, which keeps the overall cost down and presumably attracts more visitors, but it can add up, which stopped us exploring further.

“Disappointing Displays, However Great events location”
Reviewed August 20, 2013

We arrived an hour before closing time and we were still expected to pay full price. It wasnt a huge cost but the principle is galling. We had the place to ourselves and we took the time to visit all the nooks and crannies of this amazingly ethereal place. My disappointment is that there are a lot of undercrofts which take the form of dark archways underneath the palace. It is where the staff lived and they stored food etc. The lighting in these places was none existent. They had displays in there that we just could not see because it was so dark so we missed a lot of the information that we could have gotten from reading them. The Welsh version was in bigger writing but useless to someone who does not understand it.
One the plus side, this must have been a truly wonderful place in its heyday. We also visited another day as they were putting on Shakespeare's King Lear as a theatre production. It makes a fantastic backdrop for Shakespeare and we had a wonderful evening.

“Fascinating look back in time great value for money”
Reviewed August 10, 2013

Great children's trail which meant the adults could enjoy it too! Dogs are welcome on leads so it is one for all the family.
No specific tour but lots of information as you go round including audio (in English and Welsh) and models to show how things looked.
All the group enjoyed our visit.
Make sure you put 4 plus hours on the parking so you can enjoy the city and cathedral too.
