“very relaxing and welsh lamb to die for”
Reviewed September 12, 2013

We stayed in a 'better room' for 2 nights with a deal which included the taster menu and afternoon tea. The hotel is an stylish italianate country house, with a gothic feel; originally a family home but a hotel since 1975 and the present owners arrived in 2000. Very attractive location just outside Lampeter amid beautifully kept grounds. The public rooms are huge with very high ceilings and all have views over the valley. The decor is a little old fashioned as the owners have gone for a traditional feel, in keeping with the area and there is potential for improvement. The bedrooms vary in size and furnishing. Ours (7) was spacious, very comfortable and spotlessly clean AND had full tea and coffee making facilities tucked away in the wardrobe. Service was unfailingly pleasant and efficient and nothing was too much trouble. The taster dinner of 7/8 courses was well constructed, well cooked and presented. The lamb was so good I opted for it again the following evening. The lobster (a starter) was exceptional value. The wine list was very comprehensive and reasonably priced. Breakfasts were excellent with no chopped fruit in site.

Staying at the Falcondale is a bit like stepping back in time, but in these hectic days, that can be a very good thing and I would recommend the hotel to couples looking for comfort, good food and friendly service.

Room Tip: Have a look at the website for more information and go for a 'better' room.

Thank you very much for your lovely review. I think this sums up the hotel quite well.

We are indeed a country house hotel with classic and traditional fixtures and furnishings. Improvements are constantly on-going with new bathroom floors currently being installed. The whole team aim to provide an unstuffy and homely atmosphere which guests can relax and soak-up the quiet surroundings.

We are very happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay and hope that we can welcome you back.

We stayed here in a family room on the 7th August for a family wedding. Unfortunately, whilst the grounds were lovely the hotel interior decor was poor and shabby looking. In our room the carpet looked liked it needed a clean, the furniture was old and it was disappointing that no tea or coffee making facilities were offered especially as the room wasn't cheap. We stayed in the family room which was large but had no special features to talk about and lacked character.

The morning after we arrived, we were woken up at 8.30am by the fire alarm going off due to toast being burnt! This was not a good experience due to having a 6 hour drive home this morning and a small baby who woke up crying. It was disappointing once more than no apology was given for this.

When we did decide to go down to the ground floor for breakfast, my partner and I realised that the lift wasnt working. So we left the baby at the top of the stairs while we went and looked for some help. Over 12 minutes passed (we had both rung the bell and were standing at the reception) before a lady actually came over to us. When we explained that we had been waiting a while and needed to get our son downstairs she was EXTREMELY RUDE and said - well ive been coming around her every 2-3 minutes (this was obviously not the case as the Groom from the wedding party even commented on how long we were there for!) Rather than apologising and coming to help us, the lady then continued to rant about how she had been around and then stated " i dont want to argue, I am sorry I am arguing with you' to which i replied 'well you are arguining'. It was extremely rude as I would have just appreciated her acknowledgment of our wait, not a full blown argument with her.

Furthermore, breakfast was a bit of a disaster. In all fairness, there was a good range of dry food available, however there was only one waitress taking cooked food orders and this was extremely slow. Coffee and Tea took a long time to arrive and was not consistantly checked back on so we had to keep asking for more. No sweetener was offered, and we were then told that they had run out of sausages so one person was disappointed. All mushrooms had run out by the time we ordered too. Was very disappointing as they obviously knew they would have lots of guests. The waitress looked extremely stressed and although the argumentative women was helping her, this was not very often and when orders did come through it took a while to work out who had ordered what. Very much a fawlty towers experience!

Overall, this place is not worth the money. Im not used to going to Wales but it would appear that if I did, I would avoid this place like the plague! There must be nicer venues in Wales that dont have such poor staffing!

To be very honest we do not think it worth the trouble to make a response to these comments as the well-known phrase “The customer is always right” certainly does not apply to this one. This particular customer spoke to all of us in a manner that I would not use with anyone, let alone people who are trying to help. I think it suffices to say that they were part of a small group that bought one bottle of wine all evening and then proceeded to top this up outside with wine they had brought in themselves, extra people in the bedroom, rude, I could go on but it just isn’t worth it. They were also served 3 full breakfasts that had all the components of our usual breakfast - the additional person who joined them for breakfast after breakfast was finished was not only rude when advised that we could not offer a full breakfast he then proceeded to order not 1 or 2 fried eggs with bacon but 5 ! Every cloud has a silver lining and we are only too pleased they will be avoiding us on a return trip to Wales.

Peaceful location with stunning views and exceptional grounds, good service and restaurant meals and menu are well worth trying. The rooms are clean and comfortable but no air conditioning which could be a problem for some. The staff are friendly, accommodating and helpful and really made us feel at home. I would recommend this hotel especially if you are looking for an ideal country retreat.

We were visiting our niece who is at the nearby Lampeter University over two midweek days in August. We'd chosen the FH on the basis of tripadvisor reviews and our niece's good experience of an afternoon tea here. This also formed part of our 2 week tour around Wales and England where we experienced various hotels/B&Bs. The Falcondale was joint top of the 6 where we stayed, albeit also the most expensive.

Beautiful countryside, great looking and imposing house (with great views from some rooms), well kept gardens, friendly, welcoming and helpful staff, excellent breakfast (best English breakfast I've had). We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend the hotel.

Our stay was not without it's problems but it was the immediate response of Lindsay that ensured 4 stars and not 3 [hopefully that is her name; lovely lady - we met so many people on our tour, sorry]. We stayed in two rooms. The first at the back of the house had a very hard bed (we couldn't sleep) and on mentioning it the following morning was immediately upgraded to a balconied room with a view over the lovely front gardens. The first room, while well appointed and large [albeit a hard bed] had tired decoration and furniture and lacked natural light. It did not justify the high cost. In contrast our upgraded room was excellent - comfy bed, light airy room, great views of the gardens (which my Booking.com booking had promised). Perfect room. Service by one waitress at breakfast on the first morning was also patchy but that too was rectified quickly by the very charming Lindsay.

Room Tip: Our balconied room at the front of the house was well appointed and had excellent views of the hotel...

Thank you Englishgent55 for making an effort in reviewing us here at The Falcondale, it is greatly appreciated by the whole team. We are also glad that we were able to rectify your grievances in a timely manner and that you were happy with the outcome. We believe that it was Lisa that helped you with this.

The better rooms overlook the gardens to the side of the hotel, whereas the best rooms overlook the valley at the front of the hotel. The best rooms are the biggest and have different features varying from Juliet balconies, four poster beds, window seats etc.

We hope that you enjoyed your tour around Wales and England and hope that if you are visiting your niece again that we can welcome you back.

My partner and I have just returned from a couple of nights break at the falcondale hotel. We both enjoyed our trip, we were greeted by friendly staff and cream tea on arrival. The Hotel and grounds are beautiful.
We brought our trip through a groupon deal which included evening meal, cream tea plus breakfasts both morning so we get a great deal and enjoyed everything about our stay.
The staff were helpful and friendly from start to end and the rooms were clean and very comfortable.
We did lots of walking on our break and were given lovely walks to go on from the hotel.
This was a very quiet, relaxing holiday and we will most defiantly return.

We stayed for two nights and were hoping for a quiet relaxing break which is exactly what we had. The owners could not have been more friendly and helpful. Our room was very comfortable and we had a delightful view over the lawns from our balcony. Most of all the food was superb and I was particularly impressed by the quality of the ingredients. We would definitely recommend the seven course tasting menu but the sea bass we had on the second night from the standard menu was the best I have ever tasted.

Stayed with my wife for two nights, the staff and hotel owners were extremely helpful and accommodating. The food was superb, had the seven course tasting menu - outstanding. The location and setting looking down the valley was perfect for us. Will definitely revisit.
