“Second Visit and we still love it!!”
Reviewed April 4, 2012

We've just returned from 3 nights in the prince of wales suite at Ruthin Castle.

We love this place, the staff cannot do enough to help and the setting is wonderful. There is currently substantial renovation and refurbishment going on but this didn't affect out enjoyment. We dined in the restaurant twice, with the restaurant manager specially altering the set menu on our second occasion so the food was not repetitive.

Breakfast with the peacocks as last time was fantastic. We paid extra for the full cooked breakfast and it is more than worth it, the quality of the food is top class.

The only niggle we had is the suite was very dusty, it need a good spring clean and there is no seat at the dressing table or plug for hairdryer or straighteners etc. We did leave our feedback to this affect upon checking out, but it would not stop us The pluses far out weigh the niggles.

Room Tip: If it's a special occasion then get a suite

Magnificiently marvellous, mysterious and medieval. It looks like a castle, it feels like a castle and wow! It is a real castle full of history, character and amazing fixtures & furnishings, creaky oak floors, wall hangings, suits of armour, big heavy chests (noted as a place to put my husband if he upset me!). Even the entrance to the hotel is guarded by two huge marble lions that you wouldn't want to mess with! The grounds abound with peacocks preening and strutting their stuff and you can almost touch the history and magic whilst walking amongst the dungeons, the most and the castle walls. There is reputed to be a lady ghost patrolling the castle which adds an almost eerie feel. The public areas inside the hotel are dripping history, mystique and individuality. Close your eyes and imagine you are back in the Camelot era. Our room was beautifully furnished, spacious and luxurious right down to the bathroom amenities. The bed in many ways too large to enable me to bop hubby when he snored for England. We had dinner in the restaurant with food that was fresh, tasty and beautifully presented with service to match and then retired to the library for night caps. The hotel specialises in medieval banquets which we regret we were not there long enough to participate in but definitely minded to do so in the future. It is the perfect place to get married in and be a princess for a day. Shame am already married! I could not recommend Ruthin Castle Hotel more highly and will definitely return to sample the innovative new spa (under construction and due for completion end May).

Room Tip: No need, they are all spacious and individually furnished!

Our second visit to this hotel - stayed in a standard room this time which proved more than adequate for our one night stay. We had a few concerns based on previous reviews that we had seen. OK, the decoration of the room was a little tarnished but it was a reasonable size and the bed was extremely comfortable. This is a a very old building and there is ongoing work to renovate the rooms.
The lounge, bar and dining areas retain their historic charm and are mangaed by friendly and helpful staff.
It's well worth walking around the grounds to get a feel for the history of this location.

large bathroom with small glass shower....reception...small elevator in the corner (hidden) for
visitors with handicap....in all...value for the money

Room Tip: Breakfast included ...continental...you have to pay 4.50 for a full English breakfast...worth every...

Booked for a second visit when working in the area as I was very impressed on my first stay.

That time I had a large comfortable room with lots of character. The wallpaper was specially designed to make the room look like a library. The large bed sat out from and was angled across the corner of the room. Behind this there were velvet curtains with a plinth and stone statue that was edge lit with white leds! There was a nice bath/shower and sink unit set on a plinth over on one side of the room, with wc behind a hidden door. The room was plenty big enough for a sofa and desk plus a large flat screen tv. Despite being one of the coldest nights of the year the room was comfortably warm and there were roaring open fires in the bar and lounge. We were treated with a tasty late night snack and some nice wine from the bar.

Second time round I was not so lucky. I was given the keys to a respectable sized room which was more basic but comfortable compared with the previous visit. Again it was a cold night and I couldn't get the heating to work in the room or large bathroom. I was given another room in a turreted part of the building. This was warm but was very dated in style. The bathroom was very dated and I was shocked when I flushed the toilet in the morning as water gurgled up through the adjacent sink - note to manager, please get the plumbing sorted!

That said, I did have a very nice steak in the bar with a pleasant glass of red wine. Staff were very friendly on both visits. Be careful on the room rates as both times I was surprised they only include a continental breakfast. The hot food that could be ordered as an extra was cooked to order and was very tasty.

There is plenty to look at in the grounds of the hotel including ancient castle ruins. You are invited to get involved with their upkeep by leaving a cash donation. Don't be alarmed if you hear strange noises, it is probaby the peacocks roosting. One had even made it on to the roof opposite my window. Outside the grounds there is an interesting old 'English' town to explore with a newly restored pub of the same name as the hotel in the town square - a short walk. Plenty of fine countryside in the surrounding area.

Room Tip: Ask for a refubished feature room.

The castle hotel is a great place to stay, a warm welcome on arrival by all the staff who are always attentative to ensure the stay is pleasurable. The ambience of the genuine medieval castle makes for a great experience. I found it was a genuine relaxing hotel, plenty of quite areas to sit and relax within the common areas of the hotel.
Word of warning to anyone taking young children, it is an old castle and therefore the building does not always meet the same safety standards as the more modern hotels i.e. the windows in the room are low and can be fully opened very easily to a 3 storey drop.....I'm sure that children would find the suits of armour very interesting as well.

On the whole though, if you want a pleasant stay you cannot go wrong.

Note to the management.......the bathroom floor was very slippy as though it had polish on it.
