We ate at the Brasserie which one cannot book-into. Bursting at the seams when we arrived, we were soon accommodated as turnover is brisk. Service was commensurately attentive, the food well-repared and the pricing competitive; no wonder it is popular for locals and incomers alike.

We booked into the restaurant here. The food and service was outstanding! Would definitely revisit! They brought out a variety of little extras like in a Michelin starred restaurant. The food was well presented and the surroundings looked really nice. We would consider staying here too, if we return.

I recently paid a visit to this restaurant with three other discerning diners and have to say that it is truly a "fine dining experience". The ambiance of sipping an aperitif before a roaring log fire nibbling delicious canapes really sets the scene and fills you with excited anticipation of the dinner to follow.
You are then shown up to The Loft where crisp white tablecloths, shiny cutlery and gleaming glassware lit by candlelight welcome you.
The menu is a set price and is extensive - we were spoilt for choice! The cuisine is delicious and beautifully presented and the service friendly and efficient.
The only minor adverse comment I would make is that the "amuse bouche" was only warm and not piping hot as I would have liked. This was promptly and courteously rectified.
We will certainly be paying a return visit as this is one of the best restaurants I have had the privilege of reviewing.

Firstly, applause to the Old Bulls Head for trying to do something rather difficult. In the upstairs "Fine Dining" restaurant, they try to cater, not for the visitors/locals looking for decent quality fresh cooking (by all reports, well catered for by the bistro on the ground floor), which is hard enough to find in North Wales, but aiming higher, for those looking for exceptional quality - the sort that wins Michelin Stars and attracts top-end discriminating foodies from far and wide and gets your chef on TV. They have identified all the right modish buttons to press - young, personable waiting staff, extras like complimentary nibbles/amuses-bouches while having a drink with the menu before being seated, small treats between courses, home made bread, complicated dishes (lamb comes cooked two different ways, for example) which are well presented. The atmosphere and decor are very pleasing. The price, at £42 for a fixed two course menu is not excessive at this level, either.

So why not rave about it and award the top ratings and why have they not got the coveted star they would so clearly love? Well, in some respects the OBH fell slightly (but not badly) short. Our booking, despite having been re-confirmed on the day as requested, was news to the Maitre D of the brasserie who is the only person to approach on arrival, if you don't know the system. That sorted out, it took a little while to get the drinks order in, although it was right up with Great British Menu standards to be offered a choice of five gins for the gin and tonic. Some of the snacks that came with the drinks were delicious, some not so. Full marks for going to the extra effort of producing their own, but taste results count, too. Starters were fine, but a little bland, the main course was tasty and fresh but could have been hotter, the bread was delicious and the house white was OK. Dessert was the most successful dish of the evening, being tasty and well-balanced. Nothing too "creative" on the menu (no bad thing in my opinion - snail porridge has not actually caught on, has it?) but all good quality, fresh, local produce prepared with care and effort. All in all, then, an enjoyable evening, and a place I'd be happy to recommend for a special occasion or to anyone looking for fine dining in this area, where it is pretty thin on the ground. For the locals, this is clearly THE place to go and Anglesey is a very pleasant place to be, but Bray-on-Thames or Mayfair it is not. It would be wonderful if the OBH could reach that exalted level, though, and I wish it well.

The whole experience was superb.
Relaxing drinks in lounge in front of open fire with nibbles.

Then to the loft where the assault on our taste buds started. The food was top class with a smile attatched to every mouthfull. Portion size spot on and the service was attentive but not oppressing.

If you want a fantastic meal at reasonable price for the quality of food provided then no need to look further.
