“Beaumaris Castle, touching history.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 17, 2012

This is a fascinating place and a real history lesson in castle building. A real shame then that there just is not enough information as you go about the place. Probably because they want you to buy a guide book ( I presume they had them) a little more interest in educating would help. No guided tours that I saw. They would do well to learn from the Gaol and Courthouse who give an audio tour of those places which help bring them to life and actually tell you about our history. Could be so much more but it seems the business acumen only extends to selling plastic shields! Just not making enough of a wonderful place. My advice is to read up on it before you visit. You will get so much more from your visit then.

“Edward's Last (and Best) Castle”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 10, 2012

I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Beaumaris amongst the Welsh castles - it still has it's moat, and was planned to be the best and most impressive of Edward the First's castles until the money ran out!

Fantastically thick walls that have plenty of secret passageways and rooms for the kids to explore, almost a full circuit of exterior Wall rampart walks, and also the chance to go up top on the interior Walls too. Like most of the rest of the Welsh Castles, there are information boards and displays as you walk around - and if you are an English Heritage member then all Cadw properties in Wales are free.

It's very different to the rest of the Welsh castle chain as it was never fully completed, and what you see now is not much different to how it would have been in the 14th Century - you can get a good idea of what might have been, but the unfinished look gives it a character all of it's own.

Once you have had your fill of the Castle, a good shout for food is the Spinning Wheel tearooms on the corner opposite - decent food and reasonable prices - and there is also a playground and putting gteen just round the corner to keep the little ones amused!

“Exploring the walls and remains of rooms”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2012

The first castle the kids ever got a chance to explore little passageways, stairways and remains of little rooms, feel how damp the walls were ( and this was in summer). and for the smaller ones it had a playground right in front of it!
