“Wonderful friendly staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 1, 2013

The Bulkeley may be officially rated 3 star, but I experienced a better stay than I have had in many 4 star hotels; and that's all down to the staff who were friendly, helpful and attentive in every department of this hotel.

We had booked at another establishment for 4 nights, but it turned out to be a bad choice, and after the second night we switched to the Bulkeley. We viewed the room before booking, and so we knew we weren't getting modern decor, but, like the public areas, the room was spacious and scrupulously clean. And we had a magnificent view of the Carneddau moutains across the Menai Straits.

You can choose from the lounge, the bar, the bistro and the restaurant, and you will get excellent service and good value in each. We preferred the atmosphere of the Bistro for eating. The food here was good, but a little towards the "Pub Grub" end of the spectrum. It would have been nice if we could have eaten from the restaurant menu in the more relaxed surrounding of the Bistro.

Free WiFi worked well in our room and elsewhere in the building.

Whilst we can't fault the service, the building has a few minor snags.

We found the room a little warm and had to sleep with the window wide open even at the end of September. An uninsulated 4" hot water pipe running through the room probably contributed to this! Non the less, we had a comfortable nights sleep, and noticed no noise from outside or inside the building.

In the bathroom the walk-in shower had only a wide rainfall showerhead in the ceiling. I'd prefer a hand held spray as well for washing my feet etc.

The car park offers little in the way of bay marking, and is pretty chaotic. With a little planning and some tins of paint, I'm sure that more cars could be accommodated and with less hassle.

However, the Bulkeley service more than makes up for these few niggles.

Room Tip: There is no aircon, and I suspect that the south facing Strait view rooms get very hot in summer. I...

An old fashioned but fairly comfortable hotel in an ideal position. We stayed in a recently refurbished double room which was really quite small. Much more attention was needed to certain plumbing problems which should have been checked and corrected before the room was let. We did find the bed comfortably soft, but we imagine it had a foam mattress which meant it was far too warm for us.
The breakfast was an adequate buffet.
The dining experience in the evening was a little disappointing.

we didnt actually stay here,as we rented a nearby cottage, but we were drawn to this hotel by the sign outside which proclaimed that dogs were welcome.what a welcome change!
We sat in the lounge in the mornings and enjoyed coffees, whilst we read the paper and enjoyed use of free wifi. The bar also accepts dogs,so we would nip back in the evenings for a quick pint. The dog was made most welcome and the hotel is homely and warm.

We stayed for one night only, the 20th September, but we were very pleasantly surprised. The staff were very young but had clearly been properly trained and exuded a welcoming and happy atmosphere. We were part of a one night coach trip but our welcome and general experience of this hotel has left us determined to make our own arrangements to stay longer in future.
Well done.

Room Tip: We used room 201 with a sea view! Recommended!

Took my wife here as a surprise for her birthday.
Difficult to fault the hotel, room (sea view) staff, food, ambience all excellent, even the weather was good! Free wi-fi in all rooms.
Whatever we asked of the staff they had no hesitation in sorting us out.
The restaurant was run efficiently and the food quality, quantity and presentation were first class.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view on first or second floor

This hotel is well situated the rooms are warm and inviting. There is a coffee shop on the premises where you can relax and read the paper.
The hotel avertised on the net a spa, but this was not available and I would suggest not to book a room with an evening meal as you could end up paying more for the food that if you pay for what you choose to eat off the menu.
The food was of a high quality and well presented and worth the money charged.
All the staff were friendly and breakfast was of a good quality with plenty of choice.
I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Try to choose a room with a view it is amazing

Hotel in a great location overlooking the Menai Straits it does appear tired and dated though and in need of some internal refurbishment and appears to missing the Best Western brand name it once had.

Bar and restaurant staff extremely friendly and helpful and made our stay very enjoyable although our bed on the second floor was very hard and not at all comfortable.

Food throughout was excellent shame though about the dated décor.

Room Tip: Try and select one of the Sea view Rooms overlooking the Menai straits and Snowdonia
