“Friendly Anglesey Hotel”
Reviewed August 18, 2013

This is the second year we have stayed at Lastra Farm Hotel. Rooms good size, clean and tidy. Food excellent in evening and for breakfast. Our friends had a dog which was very welcome - and given a sausage each day for breakfast. Owner very friendly, also staff - you are treated like one of the family. Hotel is well located for exploring the northern half of the island.

We stayed two nights in the 'Gatehouse' room 11 and after spending time in various B&B's over the past year (visiting universities across the country), can honestly say how refreshing it was to find a fabulous place that has friendly attentive staff, is clean, extremely comfortable with a lovely freshly cooked hot breakfast. Have already booked again!

Room Tip: The Gatehouse was really quiet and if you do not mind a short walk of 5 minutes then would be our fi...

We stayed in the lodge a few yards down the road & were very impressed with the furnishings & fittings.
Nice lounge with large TV plus bedroom with another TV & tasteful ensuite.
Umbrellas were provided by the door incase needed for walk up to the dining room but not needed whilst we were there.
Breakfast was excellent (no mention of the dreaded baked beans) & at my request came with black pudding. Marmalades & jams were from Anglesey Preserves (a small local grower & artisan producer) - our favourite was Fig & Orange - and we purchased their last full jar from the hotel (but later went on line to buy lots to enjoy & give as presents).
Evening meal offered plenty of choice & a good wine list.

Room Tip: We only saw the Lodge so would recommend that.

Stayed here for one night, but could have stayed longer.
Large comfortable bedroom, large bathroom. both spotlessly clean. We were in room 8, overlooking fields at the back of the hotel.. very quiet location.
Staff are wonderful , friendly and welcoming.
You really must eat in the restaurant if you stay here, the food is so delicious, and such a great choice of menu. The restaurant is obviously popular and has its regular customers, as the staff seemed to know some of the customers.
Breakfast is taken in the large conservatory, there was even gluten free cereal available.
Would go back , and for more than night.

This review would be 3.5 stars if there were such a thing. My family and I had a week's holiday here in a suite of two bedrooms plus bathroom in between, the last night of which was spent in the attached lodge, which was on balance better. We took four evening meals here, as a half-board option is not available.

We learned of Lastra Farm via its top ranking for Anglesey on TripAdvisor and it has also won numerous local awards. This is not for nothing and the food is generally pretty high quality, though I can name two places on the island that were better. The staff are generally very professional, especially the very nice older local ladies who double up as waitresses and cleaners.

There are a number of caveats, however. First, although this is sometimes referred to as a hotel, it is more of a restaurant with rooms and sometimes calls itself that. There are no grounds and little of the extra services you would expect in a hotel. As such, Lastra Farm sometimes lets itself down on the small touches that you always remember in a good hotel, e.g. a crummy kettle that barely boils enough water for 2 cups of tea and one packet of two biscuits a day in a room for 4, dirty crockery, etc.

In addition, the food is certainly not tremendous value for money, though admittedly that is hardly unusual on Anglesey. The set menu basically comprises 2 courses for £16 or 3 for £19.50, but the mains on this menu (which are not all the same as the ones on the sample menu on the website, BTW!) are basically upmarket pub food with much the same bland vegetables every night. The two full price mains I had were both very good indeed, but one of those from the set menu was the worst sea bass I have ever had.

The setting, incidentally, is great - a pretty quiet back road with lovely views west to the sunset and open fields that the children and the dog enjoyed playing in. Amlwch itself is a run-down town that used to be the world centre of copper mining. You can still explore the giant mine above the town for free. I would go here again, though probably for a weekend rather than a full holiday.

Room Tip: If going with a family, you have two options. Rooms 4 and 5 offer separate accommodation with linked...

My Dad, brother and I spent 5 days at Lastra Farm and absolutely loved it. We stayed in the Gate House, which is 3 separate rooms in one building that is down the road from the main hotel and cows for neighbours. We had privacy a family would want, a garden to have tea in and the ease of a 30 second walk up the road to the main buildings. The service at both breakfast and dinner was absolutely fantastic with very friendly staff who are always happy to share a story or two and give you advice on where to go and how to pronounce places properly. The Big Welsh breakfast was brilliant and enough food to fill you up for the rest of the day and the dinner menu was fantastic (topped off with a sticky toffee pudding and custard!). If I go back to Anglesey I will be staying here.

We took our 6 year old Grandaughter to Lastra Farm Hotel for a short break and stayed in the Gate house family suite. The accommodation was superb spotlessly clean and very comfortable.Grandaughter slept on sofa bed which was a big adventure! The staff in dining room and hotel went the extra mile to make sure that she was welcome and she loved them all and was pleading to stay on longer!
Food was lovely, always hot and plentiful. We loved this gem of a place and will certainly be back thank you for a perfect stay.

Room Tip: Gate house family suite great for families only 200 yards from main hotel
