“Well worth a visit”

Sail Loft Heritage Centre
Ranked #4 of 9 things to do in Amlwch
Attraction details
Reviewed August 22, 2014

The Sail Loft Heritage Centre has a café on the ground and the upper floor is given to displaying information and artefacts about the town of Amlwch. We found the displays and the artefacts very informative and interesting. They gave you a good insight into how the copper and shipping industry evolved in this town. For people unable to use the stairs there was a lift available. The cafe served drinks and food and these were reasonably priced.

Hadn't realised it was there... signage in Anglesey is dire. But, what a find! Run by two lovely ladies who present plates of tasty food as art forms... fresh and personal. Tablecloths, good crockery, happy atmosphere. With seats outside to overlook the bay. Thank you.

…..the people who used to run ‘Coffee Cups’ in Cemaes (5miles away) so well, are now running ‘Coffee Cups Café in the Sail Loft’ at the Heritage Centre, Amlwch Port.

We arrived just as they were closing but we were welcomed, and coffee & tea was brewed for us whilst we had a quick look at the newly refurbished building, it's super !
Comfortable seating inside (modern décor) & a terrace outside, both with good views over the small fishing port, the Irish Sea & distant views of the Isle of Man.

We didn’t have any food this time (our fault for being late) but will go back another day & see if the good service, great food / coffee & excellent value for money, (& the dog always got some cheese ), has traveled with them (I’m sure it has….but we’ll see !).

Apparently a lot of their previous customers from Cemaes have visited them in their first few weeks since opening (that says something about the friendly atmosphere).

Not well signposted from the town (don’t go down the left side it’s a slipway), keep right onto Pen Cei / Upper Quay St , small car park & disabled entrance at lower level, stay on upper level for large car park just beyond building.

The story that's told in this fascinating centre is one that is common to thousands of locations around the world. It's a story of boom and bust, of a way of life that builds up over generations then disappears almost as quickly. It's a story of remarkable people who make an impact that is world wide while others stumble onto riches almost by accident. However, it would be easy to have missed out on the story given the unprepossessing nature of the visitors centre which we visited on a wet Sunday with the season nearly over. What a shame that would have been. Better promotion and better facilities would place this display where it deserves to be amongst the best of historical sites of the industrial revolution.
