“Stunning setting. Shame about the food.”
Reviewed August 27, 2013

This old inn, with it's wonderful natural setting and tremendous views, should have much to recommend it. Unfortunately this wasn't the case when we ate there on a recent evening.
Although staff were friendly and helpful there was an early indication that all might not be well. The white wine wasn't chilled and bar staff explained the cooler didn't work well.
For my main course I ordered pheasant breast from the Specials board. Sadly it proved inedible, being so tough I couldn't cut it with the knife. I complained, something I rarely do, and received a message back from the chef to the effect it was because pheasant was out of season! Why, then, was it on the Specials Board? To be fair we were then offered complimentary desserts but they weren't very tasty either.
It is disappointing that somewhere with so many natural advantages doesn't try to excel in other respects. It seemed as though the place was just taking advantage of local tourism to not make much effort itself.

“Great location, good food”
Reviewed August 15, 2013

The location was stunning and the pub downstairs produced decent pub grub. On our second visit we had a really nice scollops starter and good trout and lamb shanks main. Only the bread and butter pudding was actually pretty awful. Great value for money wines, too.

“overpriced, poor food, poor service - great location”
Reviewed August 6, 2013

Can't fault the location nor the flower arrangements that made this place so welcoming. Good menu, lots of fresh fish and local produce. Should have been great, right? Way wrong! Long wait, poor service. Our food did the rounds of the whole restaurant and terrace before it found us on balcony although we had given our location to the barman. Surly service from bar staff, great smiles and friendlyness from waitresses but they all forgot the cutlery! Food almost cold by the time we could eat! Seabass over cooked and tough - sign that it was less than fresh. Lamb shank ditto, roast pud and potatoes not good, fresh veg under cooked, I like them slightly under but this was a joke! Fresh fruit pavlova involved frozen fruit, the core of a pineapple and a couple of fresh strawberries - in August!!! Hardly any cream, bought meregune ice cream and heaps of sundae sauce - not my idea of a pavlova! £4.50!!!! We did complain on way out but were given the usual "will pass your comments on to management but we don't usually get complaints" rigmarole:(

Very pricey for what we got! Friends went earlier in week to cavery and were told beef had run out and no replacement or apology offered.

So don't bother. Terrible value for money, and a HUGE disappointment.

“"The Owner"”
Reviewed July 28, 2013

We stopped for a drink at the George and were pleased to find Spitfire on draft. Three of us (all handpull real ale drinkers) found the beer to be "soapy" "watery" and franky not drinkable.
I went back upstairs to the bar and politely stated "sorry" but the beer was not right. I was greeted by a man with a face like thunder immediately looking for a confrontation rather than a polite conversation. he tasted the beer from the tap and stated aggressively that "it was fine"
We asked if we could please change it to another beer and was greeted by the comment "i am sick of people like you"
Firstly i was shocked but then after cooling down it was evident that this man had a lot of complaints. As we walked out of the bar he said "and by the way don't come back"
This place has the worse level of customer service i have ever seen. This man dominates his staff and this can be seen as they all look miserable as if working in an environment of fear. Read other posts on Trip Advisor and this becomes very clear. The business only succeeds because they have passing business and don't need to create a lasting impression. I would wager that in the winter months when they would need to receive local business this place would be empty.
Anyway a tip for you Mr Owner leave your staff to run front of house and stay at home and bully someone else!!
