Description: This was originally a 17th-century coaching inn. It is said to have been visited by Charles I during the Civil War in the 1640s. The plaster overmantel (opposite), dating from the 1670s, is probably intended to be his portrait. At that time, the inn was owned by Richard Ballard, who acted as both mayor and postmaster. In the 1800s, this was one of Monmouth’s most important inns, often used for corporation dinners. One such event was held in 1840 to celebrate the wedding of Queen Victoria. the friday and saturday nights are so noisy until 2am. Sunday is better, up to 12 midnight. Food is good. Service is emmmmm....
We went out the whole day. The key was not working upon our return because somebody moved all our luggages to the other room without any notice. The quality of room is not bad. When we have meal in the bar. One room can charge to account and the other cannot without reason. It works after complaint.

After ordering at the bar, food was served quite quickly & quality was OK given what we paid.
Good choice of drinks available as well.
Quite a broad food menu & choice
Some real ale specials available
Nice old building & in the center of Monmouth town.
Tables could be cleaner / quite sticky.

This is a big lively pub and is good value. We were staying in the hotel, so the pub provided somewhere for meals and drinks (these could be charged to your room). If you do charge to your room, best to have a pen on you because they never seem to have one behind the bar. Breakfast can be huge or just a bowl of porrage. Food and drink are always good value. The staff are friendly and efficient, but they could use more at busy times.

Extremely quick service - plently of room to eat. Only bugbear was that the tables we tried to sit on were really sticky! I can't really see any excuse, seeing this was 6pm and it was really quiet.

We went to this place on our trip to Monmouth. We always like the wetherspoons and found a bit surprising that the pub was very busy compared to the rest of the town. I chose the Welsh Dragon sausage and mash which is a speciality menu for welsh pubs, I liked the spiciness of the sausages and the mash was delicious. My partner's all day breakfast. We did have a nice meal and will definitely go back.
