We camped on Shell Island for just 1 night. The site was very quiet and we had a fantastic choice of places to pitch. The views are spectacular and we pitched overlooking the sea. The facilities on Shell Island are very limited and to be fair the management do recomend that you bring a portable toilet with you. I think if you go to Shell Island with the mind set of 'rustic' camping as it was years ago ie: washing in your tent with water from a boiled kettle then you will have a good time. I would also recomend that you steer clear of the cafe, bar etc they are dreadful, dirty and badly managed.

Just come back from Shell Island, can be very busy at weekends in July and August, especially Bank Holiday weekend but went a Tue to Thurs this week and it was nearly empty, no queue for showers, weather beautiful everything really quiet and clean compared to when we went in August, although the staff battled admirably to keep the loos clean and the noise down late at night then. Probably the last trip this season but will be back next year.

Stayed on this island twice now, whilst there done quick look at other local sites, shell island is dirty, smelly and way over crowded compared to other local sites.

On a good note, its a BIG place, has all services you need but just needs more of them, you have to queue for showers as there is only 6 which is not a lot for the island.

Great take food away service

Tiny bar

I've stayed here many times over the years.

Pro's
The staff are very friendly.
On site security (patrols too).
Food shop is average price.
Bar drinks are cheap.
The views !

Con's
On entertainment nights the bar can get rough.
Toilets get nasty when its bad weather.
Police turn up just to make a few pounds on spot fines.

Overall.
Lots to do there. Fantastic beach for swimming, windsurfing, kite boarding.
50ft sand dunes covering miles for the kids and adults to play on (no digging though).

Dolphins swim past every morning and night.

Lovely harbour.

Not much of the campsite is flat so careful where you pitch. A view of the sea is lovely but if your tent has only two guide lines your going home early. The ground is stoney in some places so bring a good hammer.

Take clothes for winter even in summer, you will need them !.

All in all a lovely family and just adult place to stay.

Where to start the island is pretty cool loved the sand dunes and beach were really good ! There's lots to do if you like fun I would recommend taking a bike to get to and from the showers and toilet blocks because if you decide to camp away from the blocks it's along walk especially if you are bursting!

Well I have never seen anything like it thank god I was only there for two nights as that was enough queing up for 40 mins or a shower is an absolute joke if you ask me I decided to take it upon my self to shower in the men's block on several occasions due to the ques! Which I did quite enjoy they were cleaner no hair balls from people's hair YUK!
Although I did revive some funny looks but like I said to the people I'm not being funni but there's 13 showers for around 3000 people no joke. Deffonatly need to build more block as something like this puts people off.
The toilets were messy but this is to be expected as every other campsite I've been to is exactly the same! So I weren't really bothered about that!

A night time we sang around the campfire which was really good as long as you follow the 10 rules on site there will not be a problem although some of the rules were funny return the stones. And don't chop trees down? Ha didn't really get them !!!

On the whole I think the campsite could offer a lot more and I would only return if there was another few shower blocks built
One last niggle
5 sinks to wash up who a farce not being funny but if your idea of queing all holiday then this place is perfect for you !!

Visited with my Wife and 3 children (5-7-9)
We had a fantastic time at Shell Island , Visited local towns and the lake at Nancol.
Site itself is nice with fab Views over the Bay and of the mountains. Site is let down by the Toilet and Shower facilities as mentioned by every other reviewer.. also bin areas were rather overflowing and not pleasant..
ON SITE supermarket BASIC but reasonable prices, lots of price marked items..
Site was very busy (sold out signs were up) but in the area we had chosen we had plenty of room and didn't suffer with any noise issues..

Room Tip: Buy yourself a porta potty !!!!

After reading the reviews we were pleasantly surprised. The staff were friendly and the main areas were litter free. We were in a motorhome so can't comment on the facilities other than the bar which wasn't very appealing. We were charged £7.50 per person which isn't bad for a motorhome in such a location. There were problems with litter in the dunes and noisey campers at night but the sheer size of the area must make it very difficult to police.....If you like the idea of camping in the dunes then its worth a try.
