Along with another couple, we stayed four nights at The Meirionnydd. The staff was very friendly and helpful, especially relating to providing tips about the area. This location is ideal for either traveling to other sites in the area, or just relaxing and enjoying the town. It is very easy to get comfortable in the community in a very short time. The morning breakfasts were delicious (included with the room) and the evening dinner outstanding. The restaurant, reservations recommended, seats about 24 people. The limited menu has some great options and the deserts are to die for.
We also enjoyed take out fish and chips from a nearby shop and spent time wandering around the town. Weather permitting, there are some wonderful hiking trails with easy access from the town. The shops and coffee stops provide a comfortable way to spend a day around town.

Dolgellau is not top of most people's lists as a venue to celebrate one's 60th birthday. Well, perhaps it should be. Y Meirionnydd is a small historic guest house which is slowly re-emerging as almost a boutique hotel in the very best sense of the term. With a respectful nod to its Welsh character - name, history, local sourcing of food etc., but with a more cosmopolitan feel to the accommodation and above all the restaurant, this hotel is a revelation, and a must for anyone suspicious of standard provincial B&Bs but who isn’t looking for the formality of a larger, expensive country hotel. We found friendly yet unobtrusive hospitality, exceptional cuisine and service (with a carefully chosen wine-list), and perfect breakfasts in the atmospheric restaurant.

There has to be a downside otherwise no-one would take this review seriously: apart from the Welsh weather (and who is going to visit the west coast of Wales without knowing that it does rain from time to time?) and challenging parking, the extensive refurbishment which will complete the transformation of the delightful Y Meirionnydd into the hotel I’ve tried to describe is not yet finished (November 09); but by early next year all the rooms will have been brought up to a high standard and a bar will have been installed. The experienced team in charge seem to have got everything just about right already so we cannot wait to go back and sample these improvements.

In terms of location, there is much to do in and around Dolgellau, especially if your interests are on the active side, but equally those just wanting to tour, sightsee or simply relax will find plenty of scope too. We successfully combined both.

Thanks to Y Meirionnydd for making Gillie’s birthday weekend completely memorable.
