“First timer at a YHA”
Reviewed May 30, 2013

Just returned from a great time, and first time, staying in a YHA. Stayed in a 6 berth family room in the annex to the main building. 2 x bunks + 2x singles on the first floor. Room nice and big with sink, separate toilet and poor shower (water just a dribble). Great breakfasts, lounge and well equipped kitchen. Staff very friendly and knowledgable. Hostel in great location with plenty of walks around it. Loved it. Would recommend.

Good Hostel with shared rooms and camping site. Friendly host. The pitches for camping are not marked but you can find your own spot on the lawn. The lawn is not even. While camping you can use the basic facilities of the hostel: nice lounge with couches and a fire place, large kitchen (with all cutlery and cooking utensils available for making your own meal), showers, toilets etc. There are some great walking and bike paths near the hostel.

This is a top experience. I stayed on Friday 29/6/12 as the organiser of 42 cyclists on a charity ride. Guy, who runs the YHA is an absolutely, top bloke. Nothing is too much trouble for him or his staff. They have a small bar which served us perfectly. We stayed in two hotels on this trip, but the best night was had here. Several of the bloke said they would bring their families back for the experience.

Service excellent, the staff were freindly and kind and couldn't do enough for us. The rooms were well cared for and clean and the location was stunning. Sadly we were unable to share a room and so after a night in single sex dorms we camped outside (4 nights) but this was no loss as we were lulled to sleep by the river. Don't forget your insect repellant though!
Situated just below Cader Idris, (pony trail route to the summit an easy walk away) the walking possibilities are great and it's close to national cycle routes and the seaside town of Barmouth.

Arriving at the hostel was an adventure in itself as the 'road' leading there is an interesting drive. As you pass through Penmaenpool on the A493 from Dolgellau continue to the top of the hill, over the top and down the other side, as you approach a right-hand bend you require the turning on the left, which is where the fun begins. The hostel is along on the left. The hostel closes for the winter and this road is probably a big reason why.

The hostel comprises of seven rooms all of which sleep six people in bunk-beds. The rooms have a sink and that's about it. There are shared bathrooms with showers. Some of the rooms are based in the hostel itself while others are a half-a-minute walk away in a bunk house. The bathrooms are clean and the showers hot, although the water pressure isn't great. The kitchen has enough to cater for all the hostel guests, although be aware that the site also hosts campers and should these also use the facilities it would become too busy, so phone ahead to find out if this is likely to occur. There is also a common room with an open fire and a dining room where breakfasts are available, and evening meals can be ordered in peak season.

The member of staff was exceptionally helpful and very knowledgeable. He knew all the relevant information and was happy to help with any request. If you have any questions regarding the hostel you can email ahead and the responses are accurate and prompt.

As for the majority of youth hostels, Kings is bare-bones accommodation, with little in the way of luxury. However, all the necessary facilities for an enjoyable stay are provided and with the correct planning a family will have a great time. Unlike a hotel you will meet an socialise with other guests and the children will quickly make friends. We stayed there for Halloween and were joined by another family (in masks) as we set up a bonfire in the fire-pit provided.

Around the hostel there is plenty to do, visit and see. The nearby lake and estuary provide a haven for wildlife. If you are driving there are many visitor attractions within an hours drive, e.g. Ffestiniog Railway, Portmeirion, several castles, and mines of various descriptions. Dolgellau itself has an ample shop for supplies and some take-aways or restaurants for those nights when you can't face cooking. Most important of all you are in Snowdonia with an uncountable number of options for walks and climbs, including Cadair Idris on your doorstep.

Final bit of advice - give it a go with the hostel, you will save a large amount of money! The five of us stayed there for five nights for under £200! You will experience a far more 'real' holiday than staying in a hotel, but more comfortable than camping. I would advise taking a sharp knife of your own for cooking and some proper wood for a bonfire.
