“The Lion”
Reviewed June 8, 2013

Arrival at the Lion was disappointing because the hotel brochure photograph appears to show gardens right in front, the picture having been taken from a very low angle, whereas they are actually across the road. The car park is at the rear and entrance to the hotel, from the rear, is down a flight of narrow steps. Better or easier to enter from the front.
Once inside we were met by friendly and helpful staff. The restaurant was excellent and the room warm and the beds comfortable. There is wifi but not on the 3rd floor.
Would happily stay there again.

Stayed here for 3 nights. Our original booking allowed us to choose between a sea view and an inland view. Our booking was for a sea view but when we arrived we were told that all bookings were the same. There was an attempt to get us different rooms but none were available. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean on the whole but need some TLC. The restaurant was OK but not brilliant. It looks like they are catering for the more senior citizen and the menu is made accordingly. The bar is well stocked but is also used by the locals. This wasn't a problem for us but we witnessed an elderly couple run the gauntlet of a group of young locals behaving boisterously and swearing profusely. Whilst I understand why the bar needs to encourage locals trade it's far from ideal.

Room Tip: Don't go for rooms on the first floor above the bar.

We have just had four nights at the Lion with a tour company and we had a great time. The staff were very helpful and effiecent and the food was excellent. We were roomed in the annex which is across the car park, which wasn't a problem, but the noise from the floor of the room above was. Whoever was in there did a route march at bedtime every night and the noise was awful. The room was also a bit on the cramped side, but we didn't spend too much time there, so we managed.
We wouldn't have any qualms about going there again.

Room Tip: If you have to go in the annex ask for an upstairs room, it will be quieter

Good helpful staff. Did not stay here, just had drinks in pub garden as it was sunny. The inside main bar was modern with log burner, and had friendly staff. Reception were helpful regarding the free wifi except it did not range as far as the beer garden which was a bit annoying, but not a big killer .... Because the beer garden was a lovely sun trap and peaceful. Would recommend. Prices were a bit dearer here than the regular pubs but you'd expect that. Please note we did not stay in a room, we stayed in b&b down the road

Stayed here for 3 nights , helpful and friendly staff . Food was good and for breakfast there was a good selection to choose from . Only thing that ruined our stay was a couple with 2 children who sat near us in the restaurant playing on their games consoles with the sound on ! Annoying when your trying to have a quiet relaxing meal and think the hotel staff should have asked them to put them away ! Apart from that a nice place to stay .

Stayed in room 40 on the 3rd and 4th May 2013. I thought the price for a single room over the bank holiday was very fair. Room and its en-suite shower room were comfortable, clean and well equipped. A very good standard throughout.

A traditional British Hotel, not a boutique nor trendy place - just good old fashioned comfort and good service.

Staff were helpful and welcoming throughout. Very good breakfast. I was visiting on my own for a Ffestiniog Railway special weekend but I like to return to The Lion my wife to further explore the area.

Wifi a bit hit and miss in my room at the top of the building and I raised this with Reception. They told me that consideration is being given to improve the wifi to the bedrooms. That's good to hear because wifi is so important these days.

Thank you to all.

Stayed for 3 nights from 18th April 2012 for a golf trip. Staff were friendly and happy to help. Overall decor, carpets etc. in need of updating. A little bit 70's, apart from the bar area which had undergone refurbishment and was modern. We had a couple of meals in the hotel bar, and they were great and I would recommend. We stayed in the annex to the hotel. Room was clean and tidy but again a little bit dated. Our toilet was leaking when we arrived but this was quickly fixed when we pointed it out (they even offered to move us to another room straight away which was good). Location is very good, particularly if you play golf as it's quite central to all the major golf courses (we played Pwhelli, Royal St David's, Portmadog and Nefyn). There is an Indian restaurant virtually next door, which was nice, and there are 3 or 4 pubs nearby. Overall a very enjoyable stay.
