“Christmas Day lunch at The Berwyn”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 27, 2013

Having previously eaten at the Berwyn for Sunday lunch we decided to book in for Christmas Day lunch. On arrival we were greeted warmly by Debbie and given a chilled glass of bubbly. We all chose different starters, for example duck confit with mulled pear, crab cakes, a trio of baked cheeses, all of them were delicious. Our starters were then followed by the fish course, smoked salmon parcels stuffed with a dill cream cheese, next was a refreshing lemon sorbet. For our main course my husband and I chose the traditional turkey option with all the trimmings plus side dishes of roasted vegetable and gratin dauphinois, so tasty! Our daughter being a fish lover chose the Sea bass with prawns and chorizo, which she thoroughly enjoyed. For dessert you could choose from about sixteen tempting puds, for example Baileys cheesecake, apple pie or Christmas pudding, we were spoilt for choice. All the food at the Berwyn is homemade and is superb. If we had any room left we could have then had cheese and biscuits with our coffee, followed by mince pies and chocolates but we were all so full owing to the generous portions we had to decline.

We have never eaten out on Christmas Day before but this experience at the Berwyn was so relaxing and enjoyable that I don't think it will be the last time we will have our Christmas lunch there. Debbie and Ivor are wonderful hosts, they really do make you feel so welcome, being a small restaurant it is kind of like having dinner in someones home! It is also great value for money. A big thank you to Debbie, Ivor and their staff for a wonderful Christmas Day.

“Wholesome and Tasty (very)”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 19, 2013

Been here a few times now and really enjoyed the food on every visit. Ticks all the boxes as one says.

For starters we had the pulled pork and king prawns - absolutely delicious. Then we both had the braised beef in a brandy cream sauce. Every mouthful was wonderful - beef tender and the sauce to die for.

Puddings continued the flavourful theme albeit after a much needed resting period.

The food here is simply excellent quality - all the normal fare - beef, fish, chicken, lamb, vegetarian, venison, etc. but the added, difficult to find today, real home/country cooking.

“What a wonderful evening!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 4, 2013

We ate here during a recent stay in North Wales. On the previous evening we ate nearby at the Tyddyn Llan (check out my review if you're interested for a comparison). The Berwyn is a small restaurant run by a husband a wife team. We visited on a Thursday evening in November. On our arrival we were surprised to find we were the only booking for that evening. I know other restaurants that would have phoned us and cancelled our booking in these circumstances- shutting for the evening! However, I understand that they do quite a lot of local trade and like to guarantee regular opening.

We sat in the bar area and had a drink while looking at the menus. The house wine is really superb - I had the easy drinking red that did me well for the whole evening. The menu is varied and all looked delicious. We enjoyed the food hugely - full of flavour and managing to be both comfort food as well as something a bit different. The accompanying veg were generous.

This is a great restaurant run by a lovely couple who seem to really care about providing superb food and a lovely atmosphere. The decor is a bit dated and looks a little tired, but don't be put off by that - let the food and drink do the talking. The prices are very reasonable and if you are anywhere in the area, I think this is definitely worth a drive for a wonderful evening out.

“Fantastic!!!!!!!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 4, 2013

You just HAVE to go here if you're staying anywhere near (like us).

Ambience/welcome/service/food - all absolutely what you would like to think a brilliant restaurant could offer and this does it all in spades...
