We came here with high expectations, and we nearly left after 5 minutes.

Perhaps I should explain.

We booked on the assumption that the room would have a bath, and it turned out we had a room with a shower instead. The management didn't have an alternative room available for that night when we asked to be moved, but promised that we could move the next night when a suitable bath-equipped room became available.

The situation was salvaged somewhat by a lovely meal in their restaurant and the fact that the bed was large and comfortable, unlike a certain Travelodge I could mention....

The hotel is situated in some of the best countryside that Wales has to offer, in a small village that oozes charm and tranquillity. However, be aware that because it is out in the sticks, you won't get a mobile phone signal, though the rooms come equipped with telephones. The Hand also has a free Wi-Fi network available. However, when we were there, it was slower than a dead tortoise, so we gave up on that one.

It's also pretty well-situated for sightseeing, and is fairly close to most of the places anyone visiting Wales would like to see. The roads are fairly good, and were snow-free even when 10-foot drifts were evident, but it's worth noting that they are pretty twisty-turny and should be treated with care.

As promised, we were moved on the second night, and the replacement room was warm, comfy, and equipped with a bath. Job done.

We had a lovely Valentines weekend here. The area is so accessible, yet completely unspoiled. We had a gorgeous suite, with living room, bedroom and huge bathroom. This is truly a dog friendly hotel too, not just paying lip service. We intend to return in the summer months to explore the area more thoroughly.

We thoroughly enjoyed a 2 night stay in this fabulous location. The Hand is the perfect place to stay. The food was superb with an excellent choice of meals made with high quality produce.
All the staff were friendly and the service was second to none.

Room Tip: All rooms are lovely and quiet. No need to worry about getting a good night's sleep.

We wanted a short break in north east wales with good walks, some leisure time for reading and tasty food. And that's exactly what we got.

Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog is a pleasant little village. The book of walks by the owner of the Hand is great. Meeting the former tenant of the farmhouse where the poet Ceiriog was brought up was a boon - he showed us some features mentioned in the poems. We had intended exploring wider afield but didn't move the car once during our stay.

The staff are friendly and helpful and we were particularly pleased that several speak Welsh.
The dried fruit compote + home-made marmalade at breakfast; toasted baguette with crab and smoked salmon + home made chips for lunch; and the leek pakora + banana fritters for dinner all deserve a special mention.

We would have expected 2 easy chairs in the superior room but there are plenty of pleasant spaces to read downstairs.
Not suitable if you have a phobia of dogs - although this didn't bother us. There was usually a dog or two in the bar - all well-behaved.
No mobile signal in the area and the wi-fi signal is patchy in the hotel - but this can be quite relaxing.

All in all, an excellent break.

If you're in need of a get away break, picturesque village, love hill walking but also need a bit of luxury, here's the place to come.
A birthday surprise for my husband, we planned to stay Friday night. After a light lunch we headed off for a walk up the hill, (Remember to ask the landlord for a copy of his walks) the sun was shining, the birds singing and the scenery was lovely. Back at the Hand we enjoyed refreshments and later whilst dining there decided to stay an extra night.
Very dog friendly, Ben was treated like royalty. We stayed in room 5 the first night. It's located in an adjoining cottage at the back of the Inn, spacious and comfy and suitable for the disabled as it has a wet room. The second night we were moved to a double room (11)at the back of the Inn. Whilst smaller than room 5 it was lovely and cosy with a bath and overhead shower which I preferred.
Nothing to complain about, totally relaxed the whole weekend. The owners and staff were all great. Would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Room 5 is on the ground floor, has two large twin beds attached to each other with a mattress topper...

We stayed at The Hand this weekend just gone as I was in desperate need to get away from it all and relax. This was the perfect venue to do that!
We arrived and were advised by the friendly staff that lunch was still serving and would we like to dine there, to which we agreed, the lunch was gorgeous and presented on slate plates which very unusual but added to the magic of the place. We booked ourselves in to dine that evening in the lovely dining area they have.
We set out to explore after lunch and saw some amazing views of this tranquil little village, we even learnt that warrington were planning to flood the area in the 1920's. I'm so glad they didnt!
We dined that evening in what has to be one of the nicest meals ive eaten in a long time. Although a tad pricey, it is well worth the money for the standard of food and the brilliant service we had.
I have since reccomended The Hand to my parents who are keen to book now they have heard our experience, and my partner and I are looking forward to visiting again later this year.

Room Tip: Try to pick a room that isnt over the bar area, it can be a tad noisy, but not too bad.

This Inn certainly looks the part, however the lunch we ate there today did not live up to its appeal. Understandably the meal prices are on the more expensive side as The Hand is a four star establishment, but unfortunately our meals did not justify the price or its star rating. I'm no food critic, but I enjoy eating out and I've eaten at many nice restaurants; in my opinion our meals were below average and overpriced for the quality.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Hand is an ancient hostelry with all the attributes you'd expect - bags of character, a cosy, relaxing ambience and a warm welcome from your hosts, Jonathan and Jackie Greatorex. As soon as you arrive you feel the weight of the world dissolving as the surroundings work their magic. All the classic ingredients are here - old beams, roaring fireplaces, a casual mix-and-match of pine and oak furniture, real ale and good food. The latter is seriously good. Thanks to the talents of Head Chef Grant Mulholland and his team, The Hand is renowned for award-winning food, an inventive marriage of country fare and sophisticated metropolitan cuisine. The bedrooms, in a variety of sizes, reflect similar influences, with rustic decor and sparkling modern bathrooms. Country lovers just love the location. You can walk in the Berwyns for hours with only the sheep for company and the ever-helpful Hand can arrange many country pursuits, including horse riding, fishing and shooting. You may be away from it all, but you'll also be in the swing of things; this gem of a country inn is so much a part of village life that locals and visitors mix in unaffected harmony. ... more   less
