The bad reviews here are nonsense, harlech is a small town which gets very busy during peak times so you should expect a delay on food and drinks. Perhaps the order before yours was 10 different teas and time consuming as they all need a cup, spare hot water, milk or lemon. Also the food is homemade every morning, and always cooked fresh, its not a fast food restaurant..
However i had a lovely relaxing time at the Cemlyn, the coffee is so good as well as the coffee cake. Make sure to stop for lunch to see what you're missing out on!

We had not visited Harlech for over 25 years, and we were pleasantly surprised by the overall ambience.
The Cemlyn Tea Room is the star turn in this renaissance. The teas and coffee selection would be enough to give it top marks, but there is more besides. A range of flavoursome casseroles, including TWO Vegetarian options, served with savoury olive scones which were straight out of the oven, add depth to the menu.
The potentially superb view from the terrace is marred by an ugly web of BT phone wires and supporting hardware.
We bought a Welsh Tea Loaf for supper at home.

While on holiday in Harlech we went into this teashop for coffee before we explored the castle. It was a lovely day and we sat out on their terrace which had wonderful views of the sea, mountains and castle. We were served very good coffee and the staff were extremely friendly. Having enjoyed this short visit to Cemlyn we decided to go back later in the day, after looking around the castle, for a cream tea. As we knew exactly what we wanted we placed our order with the manageress as we entered and then returned to the terrace to again enjoy the views and lovely weather. Our drinks arrived soon after, but it then became apparent that our cream tea had been forgotten, especially after a couple who arrived shortly after us were served with their cream tea. We asked the waitress what had happened to our order and she went to find out. The fact that our order had been forgotten wasn’t a particular problem, we weren’t in any hurry, the setting was lovely and these things happen. However, we did expect the manageress, or at least the waitress, to come out to us, explain what had happened, offer an apology and see if we still wanted our order and at that point we would probably have said yes. This did not happen, no one came to see us and we had to go inside to find the manageress. She was very apologetic, admitted that she had forgotten the order and also gave us our drinks on the house. After such a positive first visit it was a shame that our second visit was spoilt, especially as with a more proactive approach to how they handle customer issues the problem could have been resolved.

Harlech wouldn't be Harlech without the Cemlyn. Their teas are very special. Snacks and light meals are of a high quality and always freshly prepared. The staff are without exception charming and polite. Instead of flavourless biscuits in cellophane, recycled coffees, dimly-lit tables of frothy self-loathing, and Katy Perry for company, a la S***bucks, here you get home-cooked cakes, a vibrant menu of hot drinks and a wonderfully quaint tea shop to enjoy your caffeine in... just the faint pitter-patter of civilised conversation. You can actually read a book here, you can bring your dog, you can do nothing at all. I'd say it's very English, but I'd probably get slapped around the town. The views are surely impossible to beat. This tea shop is life-enhancing for the people of Harlech and will continue to win awards. The smattering of negative reviews come from the fast food generation, clearly. Perhaps if the Cemlyn began pouring MSG over their snacks and served their drinks in paper cups they could assuage the gripes of the dissatisfied few, but then why would they want to? Five stars.

This place was recommended by a twitter friend. We were in Harlech so we did. Yes, it was busy, but the staff were friendly and knowledgeable. The bread for our sandwiches was home made, and there was a gluten free bread option which was most welcome. There is a wide range of teas - proper and fruity - and the strawberry shake was one of the best I had on holiday. Would we go again? Yes
