“Tucked Away In The Middle of Everything!”
Reviewed September 24, 2013

What a joy. There are a few rooms available, which makes this a 'special experience'. I had a very lovely dinner with views that capture the soul, if you know what I mean. After dinner I walked around the town and back to the room, it was perfect. I also required GLUTEN FREE, and was treated like a Princess from appetizer to pudding. Just call in advance and tell them.
My Room: Was 'extremely' clean ! I use that 'word' rarely when travelling or taking a quick get away! I had fruit, nibbles, coffee tea, and complimentary water bottles, in the room!! They thought of everything.
The Town: I had GF ice cream on a cone!! That does not happen often. Took a walk down to the beach - a must do! Going back? Absolutely, and not soon enough!!

Room Tip: There are a few places to park just in front of the Castle Restaurant. The Hotel is off the main ro...

We were going to be in the area and were attracted by the reputation for good food.
On arrival the place is well situated, right in the shadow of Harlech Castle. Parking is very limited but there's a large car park right next to the castle, which is about a thirty second walk away.
We had a room in the refurbished annexe, which is right next door. Both the room and the en-suite bathroom were generously proportioned and very comfortably appointed. Plenty of room to move around, a large, comfortable bed, a bowl of fresh fruit, bottles of mineral water, a TV with built-in DVD player... everything that could reasonably be expected.
The bar was small but comfortable and offered free wi-fi.
The restaurant asks that one turns off one's cell-phone, presumably to avoid disturbing other diners. Who could object to that?
Our meal began well with tasty starters and an excellent South African red. There were no spare tables. I asked for a fillet steak, which I enjoy blue. Once I'd cut away the charred meat on the outside what remained was first rate - good quality meat, undercooked just the way I like it. A shame about the blackened exterior, though. It doesn't seem to happen when my wife cooks it at home...
The meal was spoiled, though, by a party of five or six towards the centre of the room. They were raucous from the outset, bellowing with laughter at their own sparkling wit, banging fists and cutlery on the table and "entertaining" the rest of the room with their singing. Adjacent couples who didn't join in at least a token amount were loudly berated and It became increasingly difficult to have a conversation of our own as their racket became increasingly coarse and foul-mouthed, fuelled by numerous bottles of wine. It subsequently transpired that one of their number was a one-time C-list celebrity whose name has long since faded from the awareness of even the most dedicated of Des O'Connor fans. Maybe he thought someone cared.
We ate our meal as quickly as possible and retired to the comfort of our room to watch a DVD while we finished our wine in peace.
It seems strange that cell-phones are banned in order to minimise disruption to other diners whilst boorish behaviour such as we encountered is tolerated. Maybe they were regulars who spend a lot of money there while we were just passing through and will probably never return.

Thank you for your review, glad you enjoyed your room and free Wi-Fi. Re the steak, we use a char grill to cook our steaks and to get a proper Bleu steak you need a hot pan to sear quickly then serve strait away so that the meat remains raw in the middle - why would you expect the steak to be the same as your wife's cooking when it was me that was cooking it? We always buy top quality local produce and cook it with love and care, and I have learnt over the last 35 years of cooking that you can’t please all, all the time!!!

As for the rowdy guests also in the restaurant - the general public’s behaviour is down to themselves and not of my making. My wife did ask them to keep the noise down, but to no avail as the Comedian (not Des O'Conner) was from the 70's and well known for his lewd jokes and lively banter ( his favourite joke is about the Germen Fokker plane!) and asking them to tone it down just made it worse. In the hospitality business you would not believe what I have to put up with sometimes ( I am thinking of writing a book!) So I am sorry you had to scurry off to bed, just a shame you then had a pop at me on the internet

We stayed here for two nights on a golf trip to Royal St Davids & Aberdovey. The rooms are almost suites, beautifully decorated and equipped, including fruit bowl, bottled water, tea and coffee etc.. We ate at the hotel restaurant for dinner on one night, and breakfast on two mornings. The hosts could not have been more accommodating, the food could only be described as sensational, and I doubt that there is another b&b to compare.

Room Tip: All six of our group felt similarly, and I think we booked it out.

A last minute decision to go to the coast for the weekend was rewarded beyond our dreams with a stay at the Castle Cottage in Harlech. Whether you are a golfer, a walker, want the beach or just 5 star accommodation and fine dining you will not be disappointed with this little gem. After a wonderful day on Harlech beach we were presented with a fabulous room, pre dinner drinks in the bar were enhanced with an array of beautiful nibbles (The scotch egg was to die for) Dinner preceded by a mouthwatering lobster bisque was one of the finest I have had in the UK, the only problem being that come breakfast you have to experience it all again!!
We loved it

Room Tip: If you really want to impress ask for the suite at the front facing the Castle

We return to Castle Cottage time and time again, and if you read our previous reviews you will see how much we rate it and how much we enjoy staying there, and in Harlech in general.

We visited again in June 2013 for a mid-week break and everything was as wonderful as ever. I won't repeat everything I have already said in previous reviews, but this time of note was the fresh lobster I had for dinner, it had arrived that day from nearby Shell Island, and was still alive chatting to Glynn in the kitchen as we considered the menu over canapes in the bar and a Hendricks G&T. Can't get much fresher than that!

Dinner is always a highlight at Castle Cottage, and as well as lobster we enjoyed starters of lamb pancakes, crab, goats cheese... and main courses of steak and duck. Glynn's home made liquorice ice cream is one of the best desserts ever, and gin and tonic sorbet was a nice surprise!

Thanks Glynn and Jacqueline for a great stay as always, and looking forward to seeing you again soon.

I and a group of friends come to Harlech for a week every year to play golf. We have eaten at Castle Cottage once or twice during the week for the last 10 years or so. We also eat at several other restaurants in the area but Castle Cottage always comes out top. The food is beautifully cooked and presented and portion sizes are generous. The Welsh lamb and the locally caught wild sea bass are particularly superb. Can certainly recommend this restaurant if you are in the area.

Our fourth visit, and I can't say it gets better as you probably couldn't better the already excellent experience.

What Glynn & Jacqueline (and team) manage to do very well is to maintain their very high standards consistently and without apparent fuss or bother. The friendly relaxed approach is there from check in, through the first class dining experience, through breakfast & checkout.

Glynn is a first class chef who produces plates of food that are at the very pinnacle of representing local produce, extremely well prepared & cooked. The only issue I ever have with the menu is deciding which of the dishes I want!

Our first trip was the day we got engaged, this one was as a "micro-moon" after having got married earlier in the week. We've had other stays where it wasn't a special occasion.

Thanks again, and see you again soon!
