Plas Curig Hostel

Reviewed April 6, 2013

We stayed for two nights, and honestly have no criticisms of Plas Curig. Convenient location, lovely building and excellent facilities, comfortable beds, ample parking, and good kitchen and dining spaces.

The building has been beautifully renovated, with beds, lounges, tables and chairs and bookshelves all built into the walls, and little nooks and one-off furnishings that give the place a cosy (if somewhat hipster) feel.

Choosing to stay somewhere as cosy and centrally located as Plas Curig means that if the weather is bad you can stay inside and hang about in the communal areas watching TV, playing games, eating and cooking, or reading one of the many books provided in the delightful library nook. This is especially important given the strict cancellation policy - be prepared for the fact that weather around Snowdonia can be extreme (especially Nov-April. Forget winter, really), so that you won't be disappointed when faced with a weekend inside looking at the spectacular snowy scenery outside. The weekend we went wasn't the best for travel, but we still had a lovely time, and would happily stay here in inhospitable weather again.

Of course, this IS a hostel, so you have shared facilities and must arrange your own meals, and of course there is a bit of noise here and there - but that's all to be expected in a hostel - even a "5 star" hostel.

Overall, I would recommend this to all - I saw a lot of kids around who seemed to be having a great time; it would be a nice getaway for couples; great for friends and backpackers (lots of groups staying the weekend we were there), and there are a lot of communal spaces which also make it a good place for solo travellers.

Thankyou for your lovely review. Your review is perfectly detailed and will really help others make a decision on whether to stay with us. We have tried to create a comfortable place for people to relax when the weather is not so good and I'm pleased you noticed that. What is good about the hostel is that we have so many fabulous views from our windows like you rightly point out and yet they can be looked at from the comfort and warmth. I am very appreciative of the fact you kept in mind that although our establishment is 5 star - it is still a hostel and is mush more communal than a hotel or B&B but that is part of a hostels charm. We hope to see you again sometime! Best wishes Amy

We stayed her for three days with two of our kids and had a fantastic time. Ideal location; fantastically comfortable and warm beds; hot showers; brilliant kitchen; doggy friendly; and great service from friendly and helpful staff who were extremely knowledgable about the region giving excellent advice on what to do and where to go. We were lucky and got a family room which was fantastically designed - the cabin style bunks were a hit with the children who quickly made friends with the other families we met by the wood burner. I have stayed in many hostels over the years and this is in a completely different class. We loved everything about it and would recommend it to anyone.

Good value accommodation with comfortable beds. Showers were also great, but beware these are shared with other guests. Rooms available in various formats to suit families, couples, friends etc. Overall this was excellent value and ideal as a base for walking or exploring the area.

Thankyou for your great review! I am so pleased you find our hostel good value. We do not have any en-suits which is clear on our website but we are glad you liked our 'private' (by that we mean once your in the bathroom you have all you need, sink, shower,WC to yourself) bathrooms. We hope you will say with us again :) Amy

We booked an 8 bed dormitory in January with the thought that the weather would be ok to explore the area on our motorbikes. Unfortunately the weather of the weekend resulted in some of the heaviest snow fall in 2013. Despite this the Hostel management would not move our booking, we didn't want to cancel, just move it! So it was a choice, loose £400 or go! Luckily we have a 4x4 and we "just" got there! The weekend was ok, but we were very restricted due to the snow! Ok the weather is out of the hostels control but some flexibility would have been nice! We are coming back but we won't be staying here again. Yes the place is lovely BUT very little customer service and too reliant on terms and conditions in the website, not customer relationships as it should be. Not good enough!

Firstly we want you to know that as the only five star hostel in Wales it is very important to us that we create the best customer service possible for our guests so we are deeply concerned that we have failed you in that respect.

I know you are probably very annoyed at the situation but we hope that if we explain it from our side you can possibly change your mind about never coming back to the hostel...

Weekends in Snowdonia are the only time we make any money at all, that is why our cancellation policy is very strict. All our policies are very clear on-line so the customer always knows where they stand. During mid-week we rarely turn anybody away so we are much more flexible. Also on weekends when people cancel with enough notice we always try and re-sell the beds for the customer and then they don't get a cancellation fee at all. As you tried to cancel on the day we could do nothing I'm afraid considering we have a 21day cancellation policy. If you had read the forecast, which did predict snow a few days before, we would have been able to re-sell your beds as on the Wednesday before you stayed we had plenty of people wanting to come and play in the snow but we were full so turned them away!

It does say on our website that we will not be held responsible for adverse weather as we are in a mountain environment so we rely on customers to claim off their travel insurance. You could have postponed your weekend and it could have been worse with gale force winds or heavy rain which would have restricted you just as much but I'm sure you would not have expected a free cancellation? This is what comes with staying in a rural mountain environment, you cannot always expect the perfect conditions - I'm sure you could tell that when you saw our location? If customers do not get insurance then this is their risk not ours. Imagine if we refunded everybody every time it snowed (which it does often) then we would not function as a hostel very well and without a cancellation policy in place I am not sure how our business would stay afloat for the future.

We are also sorry your journey was difficult - the roads were all clear and we have been told by other customers that they managed fine so we were unaware there were some unhappy customers staying with us.

We are sure you can appreciate that for a small privately owned business in this current economic climate that it is always an up-hill struggle, we have only been open 2 years and we try very hard to get everything right for our customers. I really hope that you can see the situation from our point of view and that as you liked the hostel itself that you will stay with us again?

I wish you had waited to hear our response to your situation before publishing your TripAdvisor review as those kind of reviews are very damaging to our business. It is a site for sharing your experience with other travellers but as our cancellation policy is all in writing on-line people know they will be charged so perhaps now that you understand where we are coming from you could consider re-writing your review and focus on how you found the hostel itself? We would be very grateful for this.

Please do come and stay with us again - a good experience will of course brighten your spirits!

Best wishes

Amy (owner)

This hostel is a real find and should be spoken about in hushed tones for those in the know. We stayed for 3 days whilst on a mountaineering course as an alternative to staying in a local hotel. The lobby has a most fantastic table, decor and library. As others have said the kitchen is large with amble fridges, storage areas for food and cooking equipment. The dinning area has a number of segregated tables, but the movement sensor lighting was a little annoying as with only ourselves in the room they kept Turning off, but a very minor grumble.
But beware if your planning to go walking in the mountains, you just may never leave your bed, they are just so comfortable with excellent duvets and fine cotton sheets!
We will be returning.

Thankyou so much for your kind review! We did a LOT of research into finding the most luxurious bedding and so we are glad you appreciated that! ( We enjoyed immensely testing out duvets and pillows for a week before we opened!). About the sensor lighting - thankyou for bringing that to our attention we will sort this out and put it on a longer timer. It is hard to find a balance between being energy efficient and our lights being annoying! But we will do all we can to make your next stay absolutely perfect! :) amy

Like everyone else has said, it doesn't seem like a hostel at all. The place was spotless, the decor was really nicely done. There's a kitchen at hand if you want to prepare your own food which is like a professional catering kitchen, it has everything you need.

The dorm was really spacious, we had the largest dorm of 8 beds and there was plenty of room for all of us and our gear. The bunks were roomey and comfortable. There's a living room with a wood burning stove which is very cosy (and by that I don't mean small), and the dining area was nicely done and had loads of room.

The staff were friendly and made us feel super welcome, which was especially appriciated when we arrived after a six hour car journey.

Can't recommend it enough.

We really couldn't believe our luck with Plas Curig. This wonderful hostel really goes to lengths to keep everyone happy. Good size rooms, comfortable beds and good quality bedding, great bathrooms, great inning oom and kitchen facilities, lovely areas to relax and unwind. Four of us stayed in a family room for our weekend of walking and only wished we cold have stayed longer. We'll. definitely be back.
