“Ate and drank”
Reviewed December 16, 2013

I was taken twice in the same day for business conversations here. The first time for a late afternoon meal the second simply for a pint. In the afternoon it wasn't too busy so service was pretty quick. I can't recall what I had to eat but both mine and my colleague's meals were excellent. The real ale on offer was also good. In the evening it was very full and I can imagine that food service might have been slow. But usually a pub/restaurant that is full suggests it attracts customers by the quality of its service and in this case you have to drive well out of the town too - which on a dark wet night was no joke - so it can't be that bad!

“Less impressed than previous visits”
Reviewed December 5, 2013

The place was packed and our table was right next to the bar - not too convenient with a pushchair - we managed to get moved to a better location. Food quality was good but a little cold - a reasonable evening and a reasonable price - less impressed than previous visits

“MEDIOCRE food TERRIBLE service- will NOT return”
Reviewed November 30, 2013

We booked a table for 10 for my sisters birthday meal on Saturday 30th November 2013. When we arrived we were told where our table was- not shown to it. When we found it we had been allocated a table for four with 10 chairs around it- not a great start. When the rest of the party arrived we could not all fit around it comfortably (four of us had to straddle each of the huge table legs in order to sit around the table- very uncomfortable and not very lady like) so we asked to be moved to a larger table. This was done begrudgingly and we were told we had to be finished by a certain time as another large party was due in, giving us an hour or so for the ten of us to eat our meals. Already we were starting to feel like an inconvenience rather than paying guests. If they were too busy to take our booking they should have said on the phone when we reserved the table for the ten of us a week or so before hand!!! We ordered our food and when it came two of the meals were not what we had ordered so we had to wait longer for the right meals to be served. During this time the next large party who had been assigned to the table we were sitting at arrived 3/4 of an hour early, wanting to be seated. Instead of telling this party of guests that they had arrived very early and would have to perhaps wait in the bar area with a drink until their allotted time, we overheard them say that they would tell us to pay the bill and leave so that they could be seated, even though some of the people in our party had not finished eating. We were then stared at, not only by the party who were waiting for our table but also by the staff, which made us feel very uncomfortable. The service from the staff throughout the meal was very rushed and abrupt, they were clearing cutlery and wine glasses from the table before we had even started eating and were quite rude in their manner from start to finish. The food was MEDIOCRE, I have had much better from other local restaurants - one bowl of chips was served between three of us who had ordered steak which to me was not value for money. We actually had to ask for more and when your paying nearly £17 for a steak in this type of 'restaurant' you should get your own portion of chips. Pretty poor if you ask me. Overall a bad experience of the Pen Y Bryn. Pen Y Bryn is the place to go if you want chronic indigestion and to be made to feel like an outcast. First and last time for us I'm afraid.

“Very poor”
Reviewed November 30, 2013

We were recently invited to Sunday lunch at the Pen Y Bryn.
We waited nearly 35 minutes for our roast, which arrived just warm.
The beef was tough, the vegetables bland, although the sweet potato mash was ok.
There were no serving spoons, no condiments on the table, we asked for mustard that arrived in a nearly empty grubby jar.
We were not offered horseradish or any other accompaniment.
We waited 20 minutes for our plates to be cleared and to be offered a pudding, which never happened.
We gave up in the end, paid our bill (£12.95 for one course) at the bar and left.
Had we not been invited guests we would have complained, our hosts were embarrassed.
What made it worse is that we were being served in part by whom I am led to understand is the manager..............

“The best meal yet!”
Reviewed November 29, 2013 via mobile

Normally meals are of very good standard but portion size small. However this time we had a portion which was value you money and one where we weren't having to purchase deserts just because we were hungry after the meal (and I am off average build and don't like particularly big portions). The waitress was a little slow but friendly enough. The ambience was there as always and Andy the landlord was as welcoming as ever. An evening well spent!
